Yukari Tanizaki isn’t the most experienced teacher, but that’s certain to change with her new class of students. Between tomboyish Tomo, tal
I could go on forever, and I will, about Kiyohiko Azuma's mastery of faces.
His characters are rather simply drawn, but he's a master of both subtlety and over-the-top wackiness. He's unafraid to do both.
His faces, no matter how wacky, are very REAL. He's a genius when it comes to putting very complex moods and reactions on paper.
And of course one of his all-time greatest faces is this scene: one of Fuuka's heritage moments.
It's so good, so subtle, so real, so complex. Not surprise, not comedic embarrassment, just an empty realization and disbelief at her own slip-up. The combination of her eyes and mouth line, just shellshocked. Hilarious.
Kiyohiko Azuma is able to use incredibly simple lines to convey so much. Stuff that, in my opinion, is typically too subtle and real for manga to use.

The thing's I'd do to get these vintage Azumanga Daioh plushies. They're so stinkin cute!!!
The closest thing we'll ever get to a Yotsuba anime. It's truly a precious gem.
I love Fuuka and Miss Stake's friendship so much. They're so great together. They're both silly and eccentric in very much the same way. They love doing fun "bits" together.
The two of them (along with everyone in Azumanga Diaoh) are a prime example of how Kiyohiko Azuma has a real talent for writing high-school kids. They all feel very real, especially amongst the MASSIVE genre of high-school manga and anime.
Fuuka and Miss Stake are fun and weird in very down-to-earth ways. Like all his characters, Azuma doesn't have to over-exaggerate personalities to make them funny. As I will no doubt bring up time and time again, he's observant that plenty of things in our day-to-day reality are funny all on their own.
Fuuka and Miss Stake bounce off each other so well, and you get the feeling that even when Yotsuba isn't around, they are probably just as silly together.
Azuma's character's humor lies in their reality, and Fuuka and Miss Stake are so fun and believable as real friends, even though we aren't given long looks into their lives. The snapshots we get to see, through Yotsuba's eyes, are enough to give us a great idea of who they are.
