Somewhere in the late '80s I saw this U.K. 12" EP at a friend's house. I had a bunch of Flamin' Groovies records but not this one. I've searched high and low for this thing since then, finally stumbling across a clean copy yesterday at a new record store I'll never tell you about (maybe, if you buy me a can of beer). I'd forgotten how much better this Gene Clark song sounds at 45rpm. When compared with the version on the "Now" LP it's almost as if a fat guy in a thick tweed overcoat was shoved away from the front of your speakers. Thwummpp. And, other than a U.K. Sire cd collection, I can't think of another place to hear the Groovies perform Paint It Black and the original version of Shake Some Action (inferior version, btw). Did twenty minutes of crate digging yesterday and ended up with this. I'm cautious about A&M and CTI stuff like this because it can, on occasion, be too saccharine. Too smoooothed out. Get me? But I gambled and came out a winner. Sure, I own several early 60s Q records. Love 'em. Never heard this one. Nabbed it and on the way down the street some dude stops me and asks what record I bought. I show him and he says "Dude's got a sweet 'fro! Hey man that's got 'Killer Joe' on it. THAT'S my jam, man!" Interesting and very cool trio of records I purchased together at Chicago's famed Jazz Record Mart in the early 2000s. The common denominator being Teddy Charles, an oft-overlooked vibraphonist capable of hip, floating, space-age solos. All three of these records happen to be Japanese pressings I bought sans obi which may explain the low price paid at the time. Who knows? Generally great late night music. Teo plays tenor on his record and is, in fact, the famous Teo Macero, producer of Miles Davis bookend classics Kind Of Blue and Bitches Brew. The guy also produced Dave Brubeck Quartet's Time Out and signed Monk and Mingus to Columbia. Nice resume. Dig it, jazzbo's!
