Because I happen to think Trump is a unique threat (President Rubio sounds almost warm and fuzzy now), there is the temptation to label everything his administration does as uniquely awful. If I truly do find something repugnant am I willing to hold future administrations equally accountable when they do it, even if they are on my "team"?
For example, despite his pledge to "Drain the Swamp", DJT has hired a slew of Goldman Sachs alums to staff his administration. They stand by and look over his shoulder as he signs Executive Orders intending to roll back consumer protections against Wall Street. That fact should rightfully anger many of his supporters.
Now, I happen to think that a similar crew would have been advising Clinton if she had been elected, which I find problematic. Would I have raised my voice about this? Maybe a bit, but now I'll try and be more honest with myself about whether an issue is red/blue, or perhaps is more about about the system itself.
Anyone else struggling with this?
Now, back to trying to understand how to keep white nationalists in the White House from wreaking havoc. Seriously.

The question we need to ask ourselves is: What will we do? This is not a hypothetical question. Most of us will not face the stark choice employees at airports faced over the weekend. But we are all democratic citizens. Ultimately, our government can only act if we allow it to act. Under our Constitution, the people rule. Our elected officials, including the president, are accountable to us. We possess the power to reject actions we see as out of bounds. We are used to doing this in elections, but democratic tools go further. Even once an election is over, we can exercise our First Amendment rights to contact elected officials, speak, write and protest.

I disagree with the callous #MuslimBan and its clumsy implementation for a variety of reasons. However, what fundamentally disappoints me is the false narrative that it was primarily enacted in order to protect the American people. Yes, if we built a wall and and banned all entry of foreign-born people into our country we would obviously reduce incidents of violence by those people, but at what cost?
32,000 people die every year in the U.S. because of guns (homicide, suicide, and accidents).
My children have many classmates who are immigrants trying to navigate a new culture and learn a new language. I do not fear them or their families. What I do fear is that my kids have to conduct Code Red exercises to prepare them for the possibility of a mass shooting in their school.
I will take conservatives at their word that my family’s protection is their highest priority, above all else. If I use that standard the #GOP leadership is failing miserably. They are failing to protect my children. Until you can have an adult conversation about the issues truly threatening us, I can’t view your #MuslimBan as anything other than religious bigotry.
