<Waiting: On Friendship> Some of my favourite times in school were when we had to wait for the teachers to come between the classes. How we made full use of those precious minutes: talking as much as we could, sharing about interesting stuff and our favourite things (and people as we got older.) The longer it took to wait for the teacher, the better it was. The best was when the teacher was not in school, and we waited through the entire lesson cos the relief didn't turn up either!

I loved the moments at the bus stop, while we waited for our buses to take us home after school. That was when I could meet my best friends to share about all the joys and sorrows of that day.

As children, most of our time were controlled by adults. This time spent waiting was like a stolen freedom. It is through these precious minutes waiting that we made our very first best friends.

Does waiting sit easily on your shoulders? i am very passive and can wait for a long time sometimes i am so good at occupying myself while waiting that it passes me by and I didnt even realise or someone has already cut my queue or maybe i just shrug and give up and walk away or i tell myself it doesnt matter anyway

<Waiting: Anticipation>

The older I get, the easier it becomes to wait. I think one reason is because the unit of time as a fraction of total lifespan has changed. The way a 5 year old experiences 24 hours would be a significantly larger unit of time compared to the way a 50 year old experiences 24 hours.

Another reason it has become easier to wait could also be that as we mature and become less idealistic, we learn to pick our hopes and goals better. It is easier to wait now, simply because I know as long as I am willing to spend this time, I will receive what I am anticipating. When you feel secure in waiting, waiting becomes easier.

In the 1990s, the famous marshmallow test was conducted. Children were given a marshmallow and told to wait before eating it. Those who could wait, would be given another marshmallow. Research showed then, that children who could wait demonstrated better self control, and were more successful later in life.

However, more recent research discussed how children from privileged backgrounds performed much better in this test than those of a poorer social economic status. Children who experienced poverty and deprivation found it harder to wait patiently - they rather eat what is in front of them first rather than endure the anxiety and insecurity of waiting.

Perhaps, patience in waiting is not just a value that can be taught to children. Instead, it is a state of mind that is developed through a loving, secure environment, giving them the confidence that their waiting will be rewarded.

<Waiting: Bus Stop>

I never expected to spend so many hours of my adult life just waiting... For the past few years, it has been a lot of waiting - at the hospital... at the bus stop... at the library...

I watch the people at the bus stop. It seems we all wait in different ways. For some, the weight sits comfortably on their shoulders. For others... it gets heavy. Maybe its about where they come from and where they are going to. It also dawned on me that there are many types of waiting... ~ waiting for what we love, who we love .... ~ waiting for what we want but have not been blessed with yet .... ~ waiting for answers that are not ready to be given .... ~ waiting for beginnings ... or endings .... what do you wait for and why?

..... Imagine all 10 eyes, making sure her little beholder is revising, the central eye casting an "anti-screentime-magic field" while she activates the ancient runes of S.T.U.D.Y....
