This is important. I mean pretty much every lecturer at uni is after a Nobel Prize...
I would say in my university that the gender balance of lecturers is fairly even - I hear from maybe only slightly fewer women than men. But the difference in recognition between men and women is more than slight. I've spoken to female lecturers who are hugely accomplished and inspiring - yet have never been encouraged by senior staff to even consider applying for a professorship, for instance.
It's disheartening that women are working hard make it in science, and are succeeding, but receive little recognition from the blokes at the top.
Every few months I get obsessed with Lord Lucan.
Absolutely adore Paxo.
This is not my beautiful house This is not my beautiful wife
So awesome!
On a different note why did Gabrielle Aplin & Bastille decide to murder Dreams?
But does anyone even drink coke on christmas day? I'm always on the schloer.
I literally can't wait for christmas. We put our tree up 2 days ago!
'Even in a perfect world where everyone was equal I'd still own the film rights and be working on the sequel'.
Elvis Costello - Everyday I Write the Book
How cute is he in this video though.
If This Is A Man is the one book I would automatically recommend to anyone. More than recommend, you need to read this.
Poirot - Curtain
Spoiler alert!
Ok so I'm well aware not that many people care about Poirot but... I've just watched the last ever episode. There were bits that maybe I would change - for instance I don't think it quite came across how awful Poirot would have found it to become the murderer. But regardless, I was so much sadder than I thought I would be about Poirot ending. And all of the actors are old now, and Poirot and Hastings were old, and Poirot dying oh my god, And there'll never be a new Poirot at christmas again. I've grown up with Poirot - reading the books, watching the shows, getting excited for new episodes. But I didn't realise I cared until I could feel exactly what Hastings was feeling when Poirot died.
WHY IS NO ONE ELSE GOING CRAZY ABOUT POIROT? THAT WAS HEARTBREAKING.
My latest favourite place is Senate House library. All UoL students can use it, but hardly anyone does. Quieter and soooo much nicer than our uni libraries. Like there is a room with big sofas and plants and shit and people just lie down there reading.
