Hi, I'm toki (she/her)!

I've been studying Japanese for 10+ years (omg) and I've had this Japanese langblr since 2019. I learned Japanese formally starting in high school and although I've never taken the JLPT, I consider myself lower advanced level (N3/N2?) except when I'm not.

かえる

If you study Japanese you may have noticed that there are a lot of kanji and words that have the pronunciation of かえる (kaeru).

I wanted to make a quick list of words with this pronunciation and their meanings and kanji.

Verbs

帰る　かえる　to return; to come home; to go home; to go back

私は毎日六時に家へ帰ります。わたしはまいにちろくじにいえへかえります。 I go home at six o’clock every day.

返る　かえる　① to return; to be returned; to go back; ② to revert; to be restored to an original state

借りた本が図書館に返りました。かりたほんがとしょかんにかえりました。 The borrowed book was returned to the library.

変える　かえる　to change; to alter; to modify; to transform

私は髪型を変えました。わたしはかみがたをかえました。 I changed my hairstyle.

替える　かえる　to replace; to exchange; to substitute; to switch

車のタイヤを新しいものに替えました。くるまのタイヤをあたらしいものにかえました。 I replaced the car tires with new ones.

換える　かえる　① to exchange; to convert; to trade; ② to change something into something else

日本円をドルに換えました。にほんえんをドルにかえました。 I exchanged Japanese yen for dollars.

代える　かえる　① to substitute; to replace; ② to take the place of; to act on behalf of

彼が先生に代えて説明しました。かれがせんせいにかえてせつめいしました。 He explained it in place of the teacher.

Noun

蛙　かえる　frog (often written as カエル)

庭に大きな蛙がいました。にわにおおきなかえるがいました。 There was a big frog in the garden.

良い季節になってきたので、馬籠宿から妻籠宿まで、外国人観光客の中で通称サムライロードと呼ばれているらしい中山道ルートを歩いてきました。

まずは馬籠宿の下にある駐車場(観光地なのに無料というのがめちゃくちゃ良心的)に車を停めて、馬籠宿の散策。

この辺りはがっつり観光地なので、両側に色んな食べ物の誘惑がありますが、先は長いので誘惑には打ち勝っていきましょう。

駐車場から坂を登っていくと一番最初に迎えてくれる大きな木。ここが宿場町として栄えていた時にも旅人を見下ろしていたのだろうか？

"Scientific fraud doesn't make sense, why would you claim you can turn mercury into gold when everyone can see you can't" well because the vast vast vast majority of scientific fraud is not Elizabeth Holmes Theranos level chicanery but instead juicing the numbers (or the Western blots) to make the results more statistically significant in what is otherwise a fairly minor & straightforward paper

You're a grad student. You're already a semester behind. One of your experimental replicates failed halfway through a 6 week experiment and you didn't notice til you collected the data. You no longer have the statistical power you need and have to start over, with money you don't have and no time. Telling no one and making up some numbers that supports the pattern you can see in the other data is a huge temptation.

And if you succeed at that fraud—because, realistically, no one is going to check—the deadlines don't stop coming and that temptation is always there. You need another grant, you need another publication, another pilot study, on and on and on.

The people who finally get nabbed for scientific fraud, like spider biologist Jonathan Pruitt or the many medical researchers Elisabeth Bik catches, typically were getting away with it for yearsss. And none of them were claiming they could cure the common cold or turn dogshit into gold. They were publishing unassuming papers, with reasonable results. The pressure for publishing above all else is a perverse incentive.
