～にしろ・～にせよ

使い方　[Verb (plain) / Noun+である / い-adjective / な-adjective+である] ＋ にしろ／にせよ

意味　even if ~, even in the case of ~, regardless, whether ~ or, no matter ~

Both of these (にしろ・にせよ) can be used interchangeably.

With a single use, the meaning is closer to: regardless of; even if. (See below for double use).

例文

何にしろ／何にせよ anyhow; in any case

いくら忙しいにせよ。 No matter how busy you may be.

ここは不便でどの駅に行くにせよ、徒歩で30分以上かかる。 ここはふべんでどのえきにいくにせよ、とほで３０ぷんいじょうかかる。 This place is really inconvenient, no matter which station you go to will take at least 30 minutes by foot.

～にしろ～にしろ・～にせよ～にせよ

使い方　[Verb (dictionary form) / Noun / い-adjective / な-adjective ＋ にしろ／にせよ] ＋ [Verb (ない form) / Noun / い-adjective / な-adjective ＋ にしろ／にせよ]

意味　whether ~ or ~

Both of these can be used interchangeably, but usually they have to be the same (にしろ＋にしろ、にせよ＋にせよ).

例文

来るにせよ来ないにせよ。 Whether you will come or not.

就職するにしろ進学するにしろ、自分でよく考えてください。 しゅうしょくするにしろしんがくするにしろ、じぶんでよくかんがえてください。 Think carefully by yourself whether you’ll start working or pursue higher education.

犬にしろ猫にしろ、このマンションではペットを飼ってはいけない決まりです。 いぬにしろねこにしろ、このマンションではペットをかってはいけないきまりです。 Whether it be dogs or cats, pets are not allowed in this apartment.

使うにしろ使わないにしろ、それをもらったことにはお礼を言った方がいいですよ。 つかうにしろつかわないにしろ、それをもらったことにはおれいをいったほうがいいですよ。 Whether you will use it or not, you should say thanks for receiving it.

ひらがなについて

Whilst looking up how to teach hiragana to my son, I've come across some words to describe the different syllables in the "alphabet". I'm sure linguistics majors will be familiar with these, but it was the first time I've gone in-depth.

清音 せいおん syllable with an unvoiced consonant (except "p"; in Japanese); syllable written without a dakuten or handakuten -> あ～ん

濁音 だくおん syllable with a voiced consonant (in Japanese); voiced sound -> e.g. が、ざ、だ、ば

半濁音 はんだくおん syllable with a "p" sound (in Japanese)​ -> ぱ、ぴ、ぷ、ぺ、ぽ

拗音 ようおん contracted sound; palatalised sound (e.g. Japanese morae with small kana); palatalized sound -> e.g. きゃ、きゅ、きょ

It's interesting to see how the hiragana syllabary is broken up, especially because most basic charts have the 50音/50文字 (first 50 hiragana characters but it's actually 46) and then just build from there to the dakuten/handakuten and contracted syllables.

First you listen to the conversation at a native pace, then she breaks it down for you. The video is only in Japanese with Japanese subtitles, but you can add YouTube's English subtitles if you'd like.

使い方　Verb (plain form)/Noun + にしては

意味　for ~; considering it's (something or someone)

例文

外国人にしては日本語が上手だ。 がいこくじんにしてはにほんごがじょうずだ。 For a foreigner, his Japanese is very good.

初めてケーキを作ったにしては、上手にできましたね。 はじめてケーキをつくったにしては、じょうずにできましたね。 You did a good job with the cake considering it was your first time.

彼は勉強しなかったにしては、いい点が取れた。 かれはべんきょうしなかったにしては、いいてんがとれた。 For someone who didn't do their homework, he still managed to get a decent score.

彼は毎日漢字の勉強をしているにしては全然漢字を読めない。 かれはまいにちかんじのべんきょうをしているにしてはぜんぜんかんじをよめない。 For someone who studies kanji every day, he can't read it at all.

新人にしてはよく働くけど、他と比べるとあまり働いていない。 しんじんにしてはよくはたらくけど、ほかとくらべるとあまりはたらいていない。 For a new worker he works a lot, but compared to others, he doesn't work that much.

田舎にしてはコンビニがいっぱいあるね。 いなかにしてはコンビニがいっぱいあるね。 Considering that this is the countryside, there are many convenience stores.

(Note: there’s a saying: “秋茄子は嫁に食わすな / Don’t let your daughter-in-law eat autumn eggplants” which implies that you shouldn't let your daughter-in-law eat them because either they are delicious, or they might affect her health and her childbearing ability, although now it's more of the first meaning)
