EP009 The School of Hard Knocks
A sort of follow up to that post about Hiro being critical of older people for never acting, but itâs fascinating how this chain of knowledge/action runs through some of the characters - Hiro is our way in to Rin and Tohruâs struggle with breaking the curse because heâs one of the few who knows whatâs going on with Rin. I said in that previous post that Hiro was critical of Tohru because he felt like she hadnât done any concrete action to help Kisa, and thus deserve her love. Helping, to him, can only be translated concretely, through taking things into your own hands and changing whatever is wrong - with Kisa, heâs at a point where his own actions (telling Akito about his feelings) backfired and so heâs completely paralyzed in the aftermath of this mistake. He canât act anymore, and since he doesnât realize that support and words of comfort truly can help, the only solution for him is to remove himself from the equation.Â
So Hiroâs admiration for Rin and his wanting to protect her stems, I think, in part from having witnessed how she embodies all of what he deems important. Rin canât stop doing, to the point that she doesnât wait to recover completely, develops ulcers and ends up in the hospital once again. Itâs Hiro who tells the audience that Rin is trying to break the curse, in a truly sad scene where he realizes the toll taking things into her own hands is taking on Rin. (very sweetly, I think itâs also a scene where he tries out Tohruâs brand of love, wanting to show Rin his love and support and realizing the importance there is in finding love and acceptance in other people).
Itâs no wonder Rin is the one person Hiro isnât really critical of! To him, sheâs unstoppable where heâs paralyzed, brave where heâs a coward, strong where heâs weak - and yet it leads her to such a destructive path that Hiro is bound to realize it isnât the way to do it. Being a prince means helping others but you canât do that if you donât accept othersâ help and try and be happy first.
Hiro being overly critical of people older than him makes a lot of sense, since from his point of view, they really donât do anything to make the situation better. His home life is the most stable, and heâs lucky enough (compared to the other possessed) to know that adults are supposed to look out for the kids - even if itâs just by giving them a space to grow, and a stable and loving home to come back to. Still, I think at this point itâs pretty obvious to him that, as much as his parents love him and want to protect him, their power is very limited.Â
Hiro thinks most of the adults (and older teenagers, too, probably) are blind - how could he not, when Akito faced no repercussions for hurting Kisa, when no one even knows how Rin was hurt? We see that in chapter 55, when he suddenly becomes short with Haru: Haru tells him to be more mindful of how his actions unsettle Kisa, and it obviously is a terrible reminder for Hiro. But mostly, heâs mad at Haru for not helping Rin, for not even seeing she needs help (or at least thatâs what he thinks is going on) - just like heâs mad at himself for hurting Kisa and being too much of a kid to help Rin.
Is it any wonder that when he heard about a random girl helping Kisa out (helping many of the members of the Zodiac), he didnât want to believe it? That he was suspicious? Heâs used to being around adults and only see what they canât do, how powerless they are in the face of injustice. Thatâs why he wants to grow up differently, into someone who can protect people - heâs expecting to see action, not words of support and loving gestures. (it might be because thatâs how his parents help him, so he doesnât realize that they are sorely needed). Itâs difficult for him to understand how Tohru actually manages to help all the other members of the zodiac.Â
Obviously, the beach arc is exactly when Tohru starts seeing that saving the Sohmas will require action - to break the curse and help them live freely. Itâs ironic that Hiro sees how important Tohruâs brand of love is right when she realizes that it can only lead her so far. And thatâs why the beach arc is the turning point in the manga
(Come to think of it, Hiro being a brat might be one of the healthiest coping mechanism we see the zodiac go through)
Hiro being in 6th grade is really important.
I was just thinking about this. In the manga, they bring up quite a few times that Hiro is in 6th grade. This is important when it comes to the âjust a kidâ logic that applies to Hiro and his emotional reactions, but I feel it has another element to it too.
I taught as an Assistant Language/English Teacher in Japan for six years. The age range of my students was from 1st grade elementary school to 3rd year junior high school. Over those six years, I encountered a lot of 6th grade boys that were similar to Hiro. There is a level of haughtiness there that I think Japanese society kind of heightens because of the sempai/kouhai dynamic and the fact that Japanese elementary schools tend to be much more relaxed when it comes to rules and such.Â
So, first Iâm going to talk about the rules aspect. Itâs not to say that kids never get reprimanded or in trouble for when they act up, but elementary schools in Japan arenât as strict when it comes to things like lateness/tardiness to class, bowing correctly, and etc. That strictness really starts coming into play once students enter junior high school and you get things like bells indicating the beginning and ending of class and teachers having students bow like 5 or 6 times in a row until everyone in the gym gets it right.Â
When I lived in Japan, I often heard that when it comes to discipline, kids could get away with murder. They are viewed as still learning to ins and outs of society and what is and is not socially acceptable, so society as a whole kinda gives them a pass, even if they may be personally annoyed or frustrated by something. Take for instance, when we see those people in the manga that are in the park and who are absolutely frustrated with Hiro. They are thinking about how frustrated they are with him, but donât call him out on it. Itâs similar in a way to how children in Japan will often be loud of the train, but no one will say anything about it, while with junior high or high school students someone may actually call them out on their lack of social awareness.
Once students move from elementary school to junior high school there is a shift in the way that they are viewed and treated. They are no longer children who can get away with stuff. They are now beginning their proper integration into Japanese society and start learning to take on more social awareness and responsibility. We see that, while Hiro does take on personal responsibility, such as when it comes to what he feels as his failed responsibility toward Kisa, he lacks the ability to really take on social responsibility in his interactions with Tohru, Kyo, Momiji, and etc.Â
This is why I also find it fitting that his growth as a character coincides with his mother being pregnant and him gaining a sibling. Itâs yet another example, in a way, of Hiro gaining more of a sense of societal responsibility, since he went from being an only children to a big brother, which is a big mantel to take up in Japanese society.
Finally, along with all of the above, we also have the sempai/kouhai dynamic to think about in regards to Hiro. The sempai/kouhai dynamic isnât something that just appears or begins to show up in later schooling such as junior high school and high school. Nope. Itâs something that students are introduced to from 1st grade on. Most kids who are in their last year of elementary school, no matter where they live, tend to get this inflated sense of self, since they are essentially at the top of the pack now. They are the oldest students, have the most experience among the student body, and etc. But in most places this kinda goes unstated, while in Japan this is actually made very apparent and is actually heightened. Sure, the sempai/kouhai dynamic is also meant to add a level of personal responsibility to students and their actions, but for a lot of 6th grade boys, especially, this just tends to go to their head.
That is, until they enter their 1st year of junior high school and are once again kouhai who have to look up to their sempai. There is usually a large humbling that happens. Itâs a shift in character and perspective that Iâve seen happen a number of times with various students over my six years (and not just with boys either, this happened with some girls too). So, I think it was quite clever and fitting that Takaya-sensei focused Hiroâs growth on his expanding awareness of societal expectation and made it correspond with his transition from elementary to junior high school.Â
All of the Cute Riolu Moments from today's episode!!!
4) L'Ă©change ââ On va peut-ĂȘtre revoir Jirachi !
