I keep thinking about this fantasy AU where Kyouko is a ghost (as elaborated before in the ocean of untagged textposts I have here) from a death doesn't remember anything about -- she can go through walls but can't fly or go through the ground. She also "disappears" or "fades away" during the day, so she only has limited time to interact with others. When she comes "back" it's always at the place she disappeared the morning of that day, and she doesn't have any memories of what happens between those times. This means she doesn't have as much time to spend outside of investigating the mystery of her death.

Byakuya is a vampire but his "bat form" is more like a big winged beast-like thing. He can change voluntarily and the transformation isn't agonizing, unlike werewolves. (He does call it "hideous" though.) He can consume blood in both forms, he just happens to have better means to... access blood as a bat-monster. He can fly and by all means the bat form is physically advantageous, he's just hampered by his obligate hemovore diet. Which is Good Thing he is otherwise known as a scion of a noble human family because he has the means to get fresh blood non-violently. (He was human, but got turned somewhere during his teens, and his family has been covering his condition for years.)

Makoto functions as the human audience-surrogate who has to adjust to these two's unusual lifestyles. Neither of them have to eat, but they hang around him when he eats dinner for some reason...

As Kyouko and Makoto investigate the former's death, Kyouko starts to feel attached to Makoto and the living world (metaphor for working so hard in life you miss the little things), and becomes more unsure about fully leaving the plane of the living once they figure it out. Makoto is so selfless though, he's sad about losing a friend, but wants the best for her.

Kyouko is now given a choice: resolve the mystery of her death or stay with Makoto and Byakuya, but she determinedly says screw that dichotomy and decides to find a way to stay as a ghost even after finishing business. And there is one: an artificial binding curse that ties her to serve another living being. Makoto doesn't want to take it, he'd rather die himself than be in control of someone's fate. Kyouko's like just take it but Makoto keeps going like noooo what if you regret it I don't want to see you in that way and Byakuya steps up and goes fine I'll do it. If you're gonna be so complicated. And signs the curse himself. His deal is that he gives day of his long vampire life for every day Kyouko stays in the living realm ("we can't disclose when the Grim Reaper comes for you, that's information we're not allowed to get either, sorry. If you want curse insurance go somewhere else.")

This means no matter what, Kyouko and Byakuya will die a day apart. This doesn't fully sit well with Makoto, but to the other two's logical minds, it's a sound solution. Then they can now do fun detective work together outside of Kyouko's circumstance 💫

every time someone claims byakuya and kyoko have sibling energy, an angel loses its wings

i really cant decide if its more emotionally devastating for makoto to die first out of the survivors or for him to outlive them all
