In which the Hotarubi men love you but you're oblivious to their pining

WARNINGS: Possible OOC, GN! is MC, Slight reference to yandere Subaru

SUBARU KAGAMI

The type who believes he doesn't deserve you nor is he fit to stand by your side. His pining is deep and muddled with his own insecurities. He enjoys every bit of time he's able to spend with you, often inviting you over for tea or simply pausing to chat when the two of you bump into each other. But it's unlikely he'd make a bold move, even if you don't answer immediately to his invites─he starts to apologize and takes a step back. He never wants to overwhelm you, your comfort has always been number one for him. To the point where he'll inconvenience himself just so that you can be happy. All done silently and subtly, of course. 

The fact that you're oblivious might just make the situation worse, are you ignoring his hints because you don't return his affections or did you simply not notice? Subaru is overthinking all your actions and expressions. There's a possibility that Subaru would take it as a gentle rejection and withdraw─unless Zenji or Haku told him otherwise. Though, there'll still be definitely be a lot of sneaking peeks and quality time spent. Perhaps you don't return his affections but you're someone Subaru values deeply as a friend.

He can't avoid you even if he wanted to─putting aside that you're their inspector─there's something about you that just makes him want to keep returning, even if it may hurt him. Sometimes you make him want to brush his hands against yours, just to see if there's anyone you fancy─if there's someone closer to you than him. But then when that thought crosses through his mind, he feels absolutely disgusting. How could he think of violating your privacy just for his own feelings? His self-loathing will reach a new peak after this. 

If you knew how he truly is, would you love him? Would you still treat him so kindly? Between his insecurities and complexity─he believes it's hard to love someone like him─his love for you is like a abyss. Sometimes, the feeling makes him want to tear his heart out. Subaru is a good actor, you may never know the depths of it but perhaps it could change one day. If he breaks under the weight of his desires.  

HAKU KUSANAGI

Haku never expected he'd fall for you. He's a flirty guy, he easily slips into your personal space, and he's charming. He's aware of everything and at first, when he called you sweet names and spoke flirtatious─almost inappropriate─words, it held no love or affection. It was just him playing and being friendly, hopping it might calm you down as your life literally got turned upside down in one single night. He comforts you, easily wrapping his arms around you, letting you to confide to him about anything. Haku pities you at first, a normal civilian who got dragged into this mess. 

And yet... as you grew stronger, as you integrated yourself into his life, the more the two of you crossed paths, the way you always looked at him with those bright eyes of yours, the way you always leaned into his warmth when he steps closer─Haku starts noticing everything. He sees the other ghouls start showing interest in you and he can't help but think about how he was the first one to be by your side. That he's the first one you'd call when in a pinch, or when you have something to ask. 

Haku doesn't want to get attached, especially not to the honour student who might die in a year. He's evasive, he's layered, there's still so much that you don't know about him... but Haku doesn't dislikes this feeling of being the reliable presence in your life. As long as you keep going to him. He recognizes this feeling─his pining that manifests in soft gazes and gentle touches. 

Sometimes it manifests in his daydreams where he imagines a world where the two of you were normal, away from all of... this and just living together in peace. Maybe somewhere away from the city, in a nice little town. Against his rationality, Haku does have a lot of domestic dreams, not that you'd ever know. Even if he did tell you, the genuine sincerity would be hidden behind his teasing tone and you wouldn't take him seriously. Is it a good or bad thing? Perhaps good for Haku who doesn't want his feelings to grow even more.

Haku's realistic, he knows it's just a hopeless daydream but his traitorous heart can't help but hope anyways. When he realizes what he feels for you goes beyond mere 'like' or 'fondness' of friendship. Haku stops, not suddenly, but more of he doesn't remember how he used to act around you now. He can't bring himself to casually invade your personal space like nothing now. Though, it doesn't last long before he's back but it feels more sincere now. 

Haku finds your obliviousness funny. No, he doesn't act like this anyone else. No, he doesn't call anyone else sweet pet names. No, there's no one else he's interested─not when you exist. He takes it lightheartedly, using it to his advantage to up his affection and you wouldn't notice a single thing. Why? Because Haku has been in your space and being flirty since you met him... this is normal Haku to you. It's only his feelings that has changed, a internal turbulence that you're unaware of. 

Will he ever confess? Or will he keep this aching love to himself, to continue being guarded. Even if both his heart and mind longs for you? ...Who knows. 

KOTODAMA ZENJI

There's only so much a ghost can do besides long for you. Zenji's a poetic man, he waxes beautiful words for you about how your spirit rivals the sun or how the sparkle in your eyes were akin to the stars plucked from the night sky themselves. You were truly beautiful in his eyes, in both appearance and soul. His love language is most definitely words of affirmation. He sincerely adores every aspect of you and isn't shy in declaring it. 

He's also a gentleman, often saving you from uncomfortable situations by either getting someone or scaring away a persistent suitor with some "polite" messages at night. He's also protective over you, he worries a lot. He wants you to be safe above all, he'd tell Haku to be your meat shield even. Zenji is also your number one defender! You can always rely on him to have your back.  

As a ghost, Zenji do has the privilege of staying by your side when no one elses can. He can offer his presence when you're suffering from insomnia, or if you're still shaken from a nightmare, or if you simply needed someone by your side, or even just a listening ear can help. Your troubles were his troubles and sometimes he wishes he could do more to help. He can't hug you like others can, he can't wipes away your tears for his hand will simply phase through. It's through his love for you that sometimes... he wishes he was alive. 

Zenji finds your oblivious to be a blessing. He's unable to hold back this love that consumes him, and he is also aware that nothing can ever happen between you and him─not when you're alive and he's not. So, bittersweet as it may be, Zenji doesn't want to tie you down to someone without a future (literally), you can find someone better. As long as you're happy and your chosen one treats you well, Zenji's happy. In the end, your happiness is what's important to him. 

Until then, he hopes that you'll allow him to simply stay as the close friend whom you feel safe with.

JIN KAMURAI

One can only wonder how you haven't noticed the king's VERY obvious affections for you. He barely looks at anyone else but you or much less, gives anyone else his time of the day! Yeah, he acts gruff and nonchalant but his actions were always telling. He'd buy you a beautiful formal outfit, matching jewellery, new shoes, say you're his partner for the Frostheim ball that he barely even attends (if not for you), and yet you'd think he just didn't have anyone else to go with (he only danced with YOU). Or that you're convenient for him, or so he says as he calls you 'servant'. Well, with the way he does treat you like his servant... you aren't wrong for not believing it even when others tell you.

Jin has the money to spare, he'd buy you anything you could ever want but still act like he didn't just get all those boxes of your passions/interest for you. He could arrange a whole five star feast for you, speak in a roundabout way that it's for you and you'd wonder if it's your last day on earth.

He doesn't act like a typical swooning shoujo male lead. He's Jin and he isn't the best at expressing his emotions, it's hard for him to be vulnerable ─ not after all that's happened to him. His words are harsh and vague when his true intentions were just to ask you to stay a bit longer... That's why, the utmost romantic thing he could do; the deepest level of how far he loves you is when he lets down his guard around you. When he lets you see him at his weakest. Sometimes, he wonders why you still stay with him. He knows he's been demanding and honestly anyone would've dropped out already. But not you, never you ─ you always show up by his doorstep without fail.

And his traitorous heart started to have hope, that maybe, just maybe, you wouldn't leave like the rest.

The two of you could go for years with this dynamic, never explicitly saying what's between you two and somehow you'll end up with a ring on your finger with the wedding being tomorrow. Only if you'll stay long enough?

ISHIBASHI TOHMA

He finds it cute how oblivious you are, so cute he could almost eat you up. Granted, his advances are quite subtle and barely noticeable unless you're observant. Tucking your hair behind your ear, wiping a spot of food on your lips, adjusting your collar, all the small things you wouldn't think twice about but he's leaning into your space and other people can tell exactly what's he's doing. Especially when they know that Tohma wouldn't do this to anyone else, just you, the special honour student. He's always calling you over to his office for some 'business' but really, he just wants to spend time with you.

He tested your limits once, saying a small confession that got his heart racing a little more than he'd like to admit. Then you blinked and beamed, "Really?! I'm so glad, I like you too!" at first, Tohma thought it was the return of his affections but then he held himself back because the romance suddenly died. "I didn't think you thought of me as a friend and liked me that much, I feel relieved now. I honestly thought I was just a convenient assistant to you..." Tohma's eye is twitching, and also realized how low you thought of him.

It's true that at first, you were just a convenient errand person whom Jin took a liking too as well but over the course of time you spent together just cleaning up after his captain... Tohma enjoyed your company, and he found himself falling for you despite your curse. He's a secretive man, his purpose is helping Jin rise up to his rightful place, he didn't had time for distractions nor was it the right time for a relationship. That's why he never pushed further, he stands by the back watching Jin gaze at you softly while you're picking up his laundry.

Once everything is over, when your curse is broken... maybe only then, will Tohma move for his own desires. He just hopes you don't fall for anyone else before he can pursue you openly.

LUCAS ERRANT

You're both oblivious idiots and Kaito is the constant unwilling third wheel. Luca is generally nice to everyone so it's understandable why you may be oblivious to his pining. Though, you can also see it in the way his eyes always softens when he's looking at you or the way his voice would be gentle when speaking to you. Besides that, he doesn't act any different compared to his usual self except he's much more protective over you. Not a single insult to your name will be tolerated in his presence, he'll duel them if he has to!

Luca's priority is to find his missing brother but after meeting you, it has slightly shifted. You were going to turn into a anomaly in a year, he... absolutely can't let that happen. Along the way, Luca started putting you first. He wouldn't realize his feelings unless someone spits it to his face, so he continues to give heart eyes to you (as Kaito would say), a arm hovering behind your back as he leads you through crowds, complimenting you almost on everything and everything. He would say your smile is brighter than any star and the both of you would still think nothing's up while Kaito's coughing blood.

Luca's pining manifests in the way he'd be so attentive to your needs and the things you say, he has the urge to help you and that's what he does. He'd do anything to see you happy, even just a simple smile from you would make Luca happier than anything else!

FUJI KAITO

Oh, you KNOW he likes you. Not even oblivious little you can be blind of Kaito's affections for you. He doesn't do subtle, he's loud and noisy about it. The type to be running down the halls screaming your name in joy when he sees you, openly pitting Luca as a love rival, inviting you for dates that'll inevitably end in some sort of disaster. You know Kaito likes you but what you don't know is that he loves you and how deep that love goes beyond shallow waters.

Kaito is love crazy, you know that and that's why you thought it's nothing but harmless flirting because Kaito doesn't actually like you, he just wants a partner. While in the beginning of your friendship, Kaito did like you because you were the first to be kind to him and was always so patient even though he gets obnoxious when it comes to missions... You always sympathized with him even if you're in the worst spot with your curse.

This shallow 'like' grows further the more he knows you, the more he spends time with you, the more he realizes that this isn't something he can back out on. That he realizes he can't keep being a coward if he wanted to save you from your curse, he wanted you to live. He loves you so much, he would take the risk (something he'd never do) just for a sliver of hope to break your curse. This internal feeling is what you don't know, the turbulent of feelings in his heart that goes beyond his shallow acts of love.

He tries to make you fall for him too, reading courting magazines and trying to act suave like a prince charming. It all fails because whatever he does, you just can't take it seriously anymore and thus you remain oblivious to the deeper meanings.

Carnival date

The sky was clear, the music played by carnival games was drowned out by the lively chatter surrounding the couple. You tug the sleeve of your significant other, dragging them to the direction of the food stall you've been eyeing since they've arrive.

Teru wrap his arm around your waist, ordering a plate filled with 5 sticks of Yakitori. The food vendor replied cheerfully, it wasn't long before the couple had move onto a game stall with a plate of Yakitori in their hands. "You're good at aiming right, Teru?" you ask your charming boyfriend.

Before Teru could answer, you cut him off. "Wait, nevermind. Don't answer that, of course you are," you unwrap his arm around your waist and held his hand instead, gently tugging him forward. "Let's go and play a shooting game and make the stall rewardcrupt."

"Rewardcrupt?"

"Let's win everything. You have no say in this, sorry."

Teru wasn't going to decline anyways, it was what you want wasn't it? If you wanted everything they could give then you will get everything. You guys waited in line, playing a simple game of rock-paper-scissors to pass time, the loser was to use their wallet for everything for the entire day.

The winner wasn't decided as it ended in a tie, and it was already their turn. You picked up the toy gun with a confident grin, Teru bought 20 tries, enough to shoot down every single target 2 times and get the stall to be successful out of commission. The stall owner looked rather bored anyways, you were doing them a favor, earning money and got off work earlier.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

A crowd gathered behind the couple, both neither had missed a shot a single time. With an perfect score, they had successfully shot down every single target, winning everything. Leaving the stall with arms filled with plushies and toys. Teru guided them over to an empty bench in a remote and quiet area to rest.

You dump them onto the ground next to the bench and slump against Teru, "I'm not weak but those are some heavy gifts." you sighed, trying to recharge your energy by being in contact with your boyfriend who gave you a loving peck on the forehead. "We can rest here for awhile." taking your hands into his as he played around with your fingers.

Families, friends, couples, passed by them with dopey smiles watching the adorable couple on the bench, one trash-talking about the person they dislike while resting their head on his shoulder while the other listened attentively while playing with your fingers. His head laying on top of yours.

You were off on your own world with him, and no one would dare to approach the two if they didn't want to be glared down by Teru.

"Okay! Let's go play and eat some more!"

Sick

you groaned as you weakly lift your arm, trying to whack the headache out of your head. "don't burn down the house." you weakly warned to the particular pink-haired male who gave you a confident grin.

"i'll make you the best soup you've ever had!!" he exclaimed, not answering her previous warning. it was unfortunate that wendy had just gone out for an quest. "oh my mavis, where is lucy?" you muttered in anguish.

"happy said he could cook, oh i wish that's true." you coughed, snuggling further into your comfy covers. 'where is happy anyways?' before you could dwell any further into the absence of an talking cat, another wave of headache came.

"ugh, don't think, don't think." you mumbled to yourself, taking a deep breath hoping it would ease the pain. you shut your eyes, with intentions of sleeping before another wave of pain would come over. however, you weren't given the luxury of choosing.

natsu came back with your metal tray, on top was an decent-looking soup emitting an nice scent. your annoyed glare was replaced with an look of surprise, but like they always say, 'don't judge a book by it's cover'. you rose up from your previously laying position and leaned back onto your headboard.

natsu sat on your bed with a large grin, "i'll feed you!" scooping a large scoop of soup onto the wooden spoon. 'if i'm going to die, please tell happy that he has bad tastebuds' you reach for the spoon wanting to feed yourself but natsu moved it away.

"nope. i'm feeding you today!"

"natsu, what 'today'? you feed me every single time you get ahold of my food-"

natsu refuses to let you feed yourself and continued his attempts to feed you the hot soup, you sighed. you had no energy to argue with an child right now, you opened your mouth and allowed him to feed you. completely forgetting that it was just recently made.

you choked, painfully swallowing down the substance before fanning your burned tongue. "w-water!" you managed to get out, natsu immediately rushed to get you water. quickly snatching it from his grasp you gulp it down. you slump down, heaving a content sigh.

"did'ya like it?!"

as if you did not just burned your tongue, you wanted to snap back because you were extra emotional today, was it the sickness? perhaps. but could you possibly snap at the excited baby looking at you with sparkly eyes? no. you bit back down your words.

"let me try again." it wasn't that bad actually, you couldn't really taste it because you were too busy thinking about your burned tongue. you swallowed it down, "it's decent. congrats! I guess happy wasn't lying when he said you could cook." you ruffled his hair, feeling your mood getting better.

in a few minutes, the bowl was wiped clean and natsu invited himself under your covers. his sturdy arms wrapped around your sick body. "you're going to get sick." you mumbled, scratching his head. you could've sworn you heard him purr. "I don't get sick easily." his words muffled by the fabric of your clothes.

"that's true. well I don't mind this either." giving him a kiss on his head. natsu lifted his head, shuffling around to change your position. he cup your face and showered your face with kisses. saving the lips for the last. "you're so gentle today I think I'm dreaming." you laughed, burrowing your head in his chest.

"wait I just realised, where's my medicine?"

"oh right! medicine!"

he's not the best but he tries, he isn't familiar with romantic relationships and such

he can be romantic if he tries maybe, he'd be a bit awkward with romantic affectionate gestures but he'll get there

you'd have to read him well or be patient with him, he has a lot of walls around his heart because of his childhood

if you initiate holding hands with him in public or hugging him in front of his friends, he would scold you but he doesn't brush you away and everyone could see the light red hue on his cheeks and ears

he's much more affectionate in private, hugging you longer than usual, initiating in holding your hand first

he never wants you to be hurt, he may nag or lecture you when you get hurt but you'll see him nursing you anyways

he teases and bullies you on a daily basis, it could be about literally anything, like how you didn't like that one food or even how you like something

but once you had enough and lash out on him or even cry, he drops his teasing grin and says sorry, it may come out as a little late and awkward

but hey at least he said sorry, after that he beat himself over mentally for making you cry, sometimes he would wonder why someone like you is still with him?

if he was you, he would've already broken up with himself but yet you didn't you stayed with him all these while

after the entire fiasco, he started trying more, like leaving short notes behind for you to read or buying you your favourite foods

he starts smiling a bit more around you, the teases and bullying lessens and becomes harmless

he knows where to stop now, he does his best to comfort you when you had a bad day, he would join you and trash talk with you about the person you dislike

he wants you to know at least the basics of fighting or anything that can aid you in battle, he would give you a weapon for you to use when someone attacks you

if you didn't know how to fight, he would take it upon himself and ask his friends to teach you the basics of what they're expert in

if you were to ever get critically hurt or die in battle, he would never forgive himself and would climb up the tower thinking he should've been stronger to prevent that incident from happening

when you recovered back to full health, he would be extra protective over you and the activities you partake in. you might find it irritating but please try and understand he just doesn't want to see you get hurt to the point of near-death ever again

when he's stress, all he wants is to lay in bed with you and cuddle for the entire day

once he settles down with you, he settles down with you forever

he wouldn't know what to do if you've left him, it would be like the light in his world had just died down

he doesn't intentionally does it but he says the most cheesiest and cliche lines subconsciously and wouldn't feel embarrassed okay yeah maybe a lil but he'll never take it back

overall, he loves you and he says 'I love you' in every single roundabout way he knows until he's ready to say it to you which wouldn't be very long, mans smitten

"Would you like it if I said I want to spend my entire life annoying you? I won't be taking an 'No', you're tied with me forever now."

even if you said no, he wouldn't really mind just a lil, it hurt his pride :( he could survive without human blood anyways, he just wanted to get your reaction and maybe a taste of your blood

if you do say yes though, he might just get a tad bit a addicted :) he won't overstep the boundaries obviously

he wouldn't admit that your blood was extremely addictive and he got addicted. No he won't

he'll just stare at you, hoping you'll get the message and give him a drop or two of your blood, or maybe 5 sips 🥰

he knows when to stop, but those rate times when he's drunk with your blood and wouldn't stop just hit him in the head like a hard WHACK

just do anything that can push him away, when he regains his senses he wouldn't get mad at you, i mean he doesn't really have the rights since you were just defending yourself

takes awhile to spit out that apology but he does apologize

whenver you feel insecure, he knows how to comfort you. he just knows, I mean mans a vampire who lived countless of years

making his jealous is harder than you fighting Bam full power, his patience is really 📈📈 I mean what do you expect from someone who's immortal??

however he DOES NOT tolerate when you're getting harassed, cat-called, bullied

he wouldn't do anything harmful to them, just give them trauma nothing too serious :D

you guys dress up as the vampire couple every single halloween, and no one gets sick of it because you guys show up in different styles every year

Khun's slicked back hair is different breed, often does that when he's out to do business with fellow vampires or colleagues

he's not working under anyone, he is the boss
