‘ i would never use claws on a friend.. that seems counter - productive. ‘ tokoyami tilted his head to the side, eyes filled with confusion.
❝ i am—-? ❞ he’s so successfully sidetracked that the class rep almost forgot the other half of the conversation. normally, he’d choose to brush off a comment such as that ( or take it as a rhetorical insult ) but since it came from someone as straightforward as tokoyami ; well, it held a lot more weight—-. his expression might’ve gotten horrendously flushed had it not been for a quick mental backpedal towards the original direction of their conversation. right, right—- swordsmanship. kendo. akihido. those sorts of self-defense classes—-! ❝ w-well, maybe we can find a mentor or teacher who has at least some experience in it. ❞ it’s a long shot ; but he’d be more than willing to help out his fellow classmate. it’s true that he shouldn’t use a part of his quirk or an item that he’s not proficient in against a classmate or a villain. ❝ to be honest, even i can’t do much without my quirk adding on some extra ‘ weight ’ to my kicks. ❞ it is a miracle his femur doesn’t dislocate or shin also doesn’t shatter on impact. but—- he’s obviously not had a lot of time to balance out his other strengths & weaknesses.
❝ maybe i could try & help you out—-? ❞ he is pretty quick on his feet to say the least ; not to mention tokoyami is defenseless as soon as ‘ dark shadow ’ is elsewhere on the field. pitted against someone as swift as him ( as it had happened before ) might’ve forced his classmates with such a quirk to lean more on the physical offense. ❝ i don’t think you could cause too much damage with my ingenium outfit on—-? ❞
iida was not the stereotypical definition of the word - boys like bakugou and kirishima were more likely to fit the categorized meaning, with their hair - cuts and the way they curved words between their lips, but iida held something much cooler than anyone else he’d ever met ; an untarnished good heart. he could see why midoriya was willing to step down to let him rise to his position of class president, and he almost feels inadequate for not casting his vote for the other ( but he had been selfish ). ‘ you’re one of the coolest people i’ve ever met. ‘ it isn’t dusted with awe, or coloured with the shock of talking to someone who was so profusely cool, but rather with the same way he spoke most of his words - calm and composed, but filled with all the truth he could muster from his entire being. ‘ i fear that most teachers have quirks that are better for up - close battle, so i doubt any would venture into swordmanship. ‘ still, the offer was a nice one, especially since iida seemed to harbour no other ulterior motives that helping him - he shows his happiness at the other by nodding his head, uttering a softened ‘ thank you, though. ‘ he understands each quirk has a limit, but he supposed he had never thought too much on iida using his quirk even in close combat - ‘ you utilize a powerful quirk well. ‘
the next offer summoned widening eyes from the bird - like boy, tilting his head to the side. he didn’t want to trouble iida, but there was something so open about the other boy that he seemed as if he would never think of anything as a bother, especially not something he had willingly offered. he had asked very little of him before, perhaps it was time to claim a favor from the other. ‘ would it not cut into your own practice time ? ‘
kirishima beams at him, both in pride and excitement. this is gonna be so fun! not only is he excited about seeing more of dark shadow, but he’s looking forward to getting to know tokoyami a little better, too. ❝ don’t mention it, dude! by the end of this, you two’re gonna be beatin’ up on bakugou! ❞
tokoyami very quickly glanced around himself at the assertion, as if bakugou would suddenly spring forward and leap himself at the both of them for such an assumption - anyone could recognize the other’s power, and he simply hoped to not be on the receiving end of it when he struck. ‘ i wouldn’t go that far, but i admire your excitement and proud, kirishima. ‘
Tokoyami’s not the sort of person that strikes her as social. In spite of his nature she wonders if he’s birdlike in the same way she’s froggy. Birds needs other birds to be social, maybe he’s found his bird of a feather within Class 1-A or a flock for him to be a part of. She’s stumbled across her very own army.
“Can he?” She wonders if he’s a manifestation of Tokoyami-chan’s inner most self out in the open. If Tsuyu’s inner thoughts didn’t leave the moment it popped into her heart she ponders over what her inner most thoughts would sound like to others. It could be a piece of his soul or a part that’s intertwined with him. Whatever Dark Shadow is, “Kero. Dark Shadow is a part of Tokoyami-chan, so I’m inclined to like him too.”
Doted on as an only child, Tokoyami had perhaps not gained the best social skills from his childhood - it was harder to connect with people who gaped at him, wide - eyed and too interested or intimidated by his appearance to interact with him ; the world had adjusted to quirks, but physical disturbances still held shocking in some respects, especially some most were unprecedented. He wondered if Tsuyu ever felt the same, but he felt too quiet to ask her something so personal.
She speaks softened words about liking Dark Shadow, a part of himself that never felt fully his own, and he spared her the littlest smile - something he didn’t afford many. Most barely knew Tokoyami, so going as far as to grow fond of Dark Shadow was always a stretch, but Tsuyu’s words were reassuring. ‘ I think he would like you a lot, too. ‘ As long as they met in day - light.

Differences in quirk is understandable, Todoroki to admit that a shadow-based quirk is rather volatile & prone to moments of being unable to tame it. Handy, to have long-ranged capable attacks, but even he was not immune to his own power; the backlashes that of giving him frostbite or heatstroke if he wasn’t too careful. ❝Hmm–❞ mild disagreement there, but he didn’t demean a wishful thinking. ❝We can handle it as we improve, besides I doubt Recovery Girl can always be there,❞ a strain on an aged hero & with such a unique quirk, who knows if they’ll be able to gain allies who can do the same?
❝You can cloak yourself with your quirk now right?❞ allowing his curiosity & intrigue to be conveyed, he acknowledges his classmate’s own potential as he’s seen how powerful it can be in the element of the night.
Most quirks had their own downfalls, though he was thankful that most were extreme as Midoriya’s had seemed to be in his first few days, but it was gratifying to know that every hero was joined together with one failure - their quirks, no matter how useful, did not make them indestructible. ‘ Of course. ‘ He ventured no further into the subject, knowing that wishful thinking would only stifle his improvement.
‘ I can. ‘ Something akin to pride settled into his voice, shoulders lifting as if his body could outline just how happy he was with his own development - he had barely put much thought into such an achievement beforehand, but now he felt his fingers stretching out, pressing against every inch of his quirk in search for new power. ‘ It’s amazing how strong we’ve all become. ‘
❝ so you can use a sword—-! ❞ that makes the dangerous trinkets much more acceptable, rather than merely having swords strewn out for aesthetic purposes. given that their rooms are an attribute to their overall character ; but it is exciting to learn that tokoyami can utilize other forms of combat non-reliant on ‘ dark shadow. ’ the class president’s expression brightened a considerable amount ; although it has always been difficult to tell when his classmate is anxious, or upset. he thought now might’ve been a good time to at least make an attempt to grasp more on those he’s sworn to protect & give unconditional support——.
❝ yes—-! that is really cool, tokoyami-san—-! you are very cool, ❞ had that slew of comments come from anyone else, they might’ve been seen as lacking in genuine conviction. but given his ecstatic nature ; it is obvious that the other does believe in the calm & collected mindset of tokoyami. kendo is quite difficult to grasp & most students who ‘ practice ’ it start in middle school or even earlier. it is described as a way to conduct & train an individual’s self-discipline—–. though his own personal preference had always gone towards track or extracurriculars that could strengthen his lower body. ❝ though, can i ask a question—-? ❞ he pauses in case the other wishes to deny him. ❝ why not consider using one while we train—-? ❞ is it because everyone else relied solely on their quirks—-? is it unfair that tokoyami had an edge in close quarters combat—-? if that is the case, he had heavily misjudged his companion for lacking in basic compassion.
as iida brightened, the class president bursting like enthused sunshine at every conversation, tokoyami found himself eased into the vibrance of him - he wasn’t very used to being fawned over, but he decided very quickly that he could adjust to it, warmth bursting through his chest ; if iida failed at becoming a prohero, though tokoyami doubted such talent would fail easily, he could become some kind of motivational speaker - he would pay to be followed around by the welcoming voice of the taller boy. ‘ i can use it if it’s needed, but i won’t be able to manipulate the weapon with guided ease. my movements are still rocky and stiff. ‘
his fingers fiddled in the pockets of his hoodie, the dark fabric rustling slightly with his movements as he tried to steady himself against the onslaught of compliments - he had been told that his mannerisms were often quite darkened and refined, and that most found him odd because of it, but iida called him ‘ cool ‘ with such conviction that he could only believe it. ‘ thank you, iida - san. you are also very. . .cool. ‘ the word sounded odd falling between his teeth, but he felt it had to be said, iida deserved to be assured for all the support he gave. ‘ i don’t believe i’m good enough at it to use it. someone might get seriously hurt. ‘

He’s the owner of quite a quirk. Before meeting him she had never seen one manifest as its own separate entity. Where he ends and the other begins she can’t say but she’s enchanted by it all the same. Does he have his own feelings, his own thoughts, or is he just an extension of Fumikage? Are the two of them very different from one another? From what Tsuyu’s seen Dark Shadow’s more outspoken than he when given the spotlight or lack thereof.
It strikes Tsuyu as incredibly useful. “Tokoyami-chan, it’s like you always have a friend with you,” she can’t imaging him with a boisterous younger brother that would burst into his darkened room without permission or a chatty younger sister that would follow after him like a duckling. “There are times when I miss my little brother and sister, if I could have brought them with me I would have kero.” Minding them hadn’t become a burden even if she sometimes thought of her responsibilities as such. They were hers to bear and she was always happy to be with Samidare and Satsuki. “Is it nicer now that he’s able to respond to you?”
There was no denying that his quirk was useful and powerful in equal regards - Dark Shadow allowed for long - range combat with unparalleled ease, and could overwatch situations for him, he was protection and defence and Tokoyami was thankful for such a quirk. It still didn’t soften the rougher edges of his power. Dark Shadow could usually be controlled, but there were times when the Shadow rebelled against him, speaking as a separate entity rather than an extended part of himself.
‘ I’ve never thought of it like that. ‘ It was a rose - coloured view of the looming darkness, but he took to it with ease - quiet and reserved, he had made few friends outside of his classes, but he supposed a certain ease came with knowing that Dark Shadow would always be fixed to him. ‘ It must be hard to leave behind family. . .I’m sure they’re all proud of you for being here, though. ‘ He knew his parents had cried at his acceptance, arms and wings flung across his body. ‘ He can be quite sassy. ‘
