Autopsy Theater, St. Elizabeth's Hospital Washington, D.C., 2005 © Christopher Payne // The Haunting Beauty of Abandoned Psychiatric Hospitals // Architect Christopher Payne spent six years photographing empty institutions across the US, as his new exhibition 'Asylum' documents // "I found a lot of time capsules that people had left. Often they would still use, say, the lower floors of the building for the hospital, but they’d turn off the elevator and let the upper floors go to disrepair. So that’s what people would show me. I saw a lot of projection rooms, with all the original projectors that hadn’t been used in 40 years. A new set of clothes from MIT Media Lab’s Tangible Media Group started life in a flask. By printing bacteria into fabric, it’s possible to make clothes that are partially alive—and that can respond to the outside world. // Kevin Francis Gray - Temporal Sitter, 2011. Carrara Marble. 94 x 80 x 80 cm Irish sculptor Kevin Francis Gray works primarily with bronze and marble to create idealized figures draped with fabric in the style of Neoclassical or Baroque figurative sculptures. Though, unlike gods or royalty that one might expect to see rendered in such incredible detail, Gray instead creates anonymous depictions of regular individuals he encounters near his studio in London, often people struggling with addiction or other difficult, real-world issues. From an essay about Gray’s work by Rachel Wilf: The resulting works portray these subjects—often with personal histories marred by contemporary demons such as addiction—with dignity and importance, yet they also express a somber, contemplative quality emphasized by the artist’s consistent shrouding of his subject’s faces. // A celebrated master glass artist, Jeff Zimmerman (b. 1968) belongs to a group of daring contemporary artists who employ the ancient material as a means of expression rather than an end in itself. His sculptures and functional pieces exploit techniques of advanced glassmaking and the defining properties of glass itself -- the way it hovers between liquid and solid states, its reflectivity and tactile qualities, its habit of moving constantly while still molten -- to evoke a dimension of experience where things are happening that we can feel but not necessarily define. His signature organic shapes are intensely colorful but soft, mysterious but welcoming, disquieting yet familiar. // If a Tree Falls in the Forest… With These Megaphones, by a Group of Estonian Art Student, You Will Here it! // The soothing sounds of nature have never been easier to hear after a group of interior architecture students from the Estonian Academy of Arts decided to infiltrate a nearby forest with three giant wooden microphones. The sound-amplifying installation is near RMK’s pähni nature centre, an area where one can currently rest within the grooves of one of three megaphones to intently listen to the detailed rustling of leaves or chirping of birds both near and far. According to interior architect Hannes Praks the three-metre diameter megaphones will act as a “bandstand” for the environment around it. “We’ll be placing the three megaphones at such a distance and at a suitable angle, so at the centre of the installation, sound feed from all three directions should create a unique merged surround sound effect,” said Praks. The structures will not only be available for solo meditation, but also serve as stages for intimate events and protective structures for spending the night in the woods—which in this forest you can do for free. A 100-Year-Old Church in Spain Transformed into a Skate Park Covered in Murals by Okuda San Miguel // Originally designed by Asturian architect Manuel del Busto in 1912, the church of Santa Barbara in Llanera, Asturias, was abandoned for years and crumbling from neglect. Luckily, a group of enterprising individuals lead by a collective called the ‘Church Brigade,’ with help from online fundraising and Red Bull, the church was salvaged and turned into a public skate park dubbed #KaosTemple. As if having a skate park inside a beautiful abandoned church wasn’t enough, artist Okuda San Miguel was commissioned to cover the walls and vaulted ceilings with his unique brand of colorful geometric figures. Nearly every flat interior surface is covered with a rainbow of color, illuminated from every side by tall windows, making this a truly special place to skate. Functional Shelves and Tables Built From Fallen South American Trees // Artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz allows natural form to dictate his furniture design, building shelves and tables that conform to the tree structures that inspire his work. Highlighting the tree’s shape as focal point, Errazuriz keeps his designs simple, placing only thin panes of glass to add the functionality needed for shelves or tabletops. The trees he incorporates into his designs are sourced from forests in South America, readapting their fallen branches while keeping the integrity of trees’ original shape (like the root system seen in his Tree Table abow). Although Errazuriz’s designs tend to be minimal, he is also fond of adding a dash of the absurd. “It’s important to me that a project consist of just a little twist,” he said, “because I ultimately want people to see the obvious, the everyday differently.” The Chilean artist received his Master’s in Fine Arts from New York University and is currently based in New York City.
