The rare white grizzly bear, sometimes called the “spirit grizzly” or “blond grizzly,” has been documented in the Canadian Rockies, particularly in Banff National Park in Alberta. Unlike the Kermode bear of coastal British Columbia, which is a subspecies of black bear with a genetic trait for white fur, the white grizzly is simply a color variation of the grizzly bear. One individual, nicknamed Nakoda, has become especially well known in Banff, drawing attention from visitors and wildlife photographers. These bears are extremely rare, with only a handful ever observed in the region.
