challenging all white women to put in even half the effort they spend on fearmongering to other white women about parking lot abductions to instead support MMIWG initiatives if they want to actually make a difference in protecting women

hi fellow shiny happy people, iii wanna discuss mike’s monster tour nudie suit era bc i love many a musician who wears them, and mike mills doesn’t get enough credit. first of all, we get a crumb of a spotlight on him which should be enough to erupt into enthusiastic applause. and the choice to wear nudie suits leans so hard into southen subculture and keeping cosmic america alive. a good chunk of the scene that R.E.M. grew up in and were a part of featured DIY with the use of western wear and a general appreciation for it. there are tons of pics of them wearing bolo ties, western boots, etc. (i always thought michael had a really cool style that borrowed a lot from everyday wear in the south + NYC 70s punk. which i love.) nudie suits were largely dying out by the mid-90s, so i honestly think that such a nod to that era of early 70s country greatness AND monster being such a glam-heavy record, is pretty cool. also, i love mike mills enough to post about this + i think it’s cool that he found something that fit so well with the themes of monster that kinda highlights him as an individual. uh ANYWAY—
a lot of love and care went into the original Nudie suits and all of the work was initially attributed to designer Nudie Cohn, his wife, Bobbie, and designer/expert bedazzler Manuel Cuevas at Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors in LA. most people are familiar with gram parson’s nudie suit, and it’s a beauty! it became a symbol of country music with musicians like merle haggard, and even jerry garcia had a super cool one. porter wagoner owned over 50 of Nudie Cohn’s original designs! now i don’t know if the ones Mike had are official nudie suits because the original shop closed in 1994, BUT it’s very possible. here are a few more shots of Mike’s:
here’s some great shots from road movie ‘95, too :))
approaching almost ten years of the replacements being a Very Important Band for me and now they serve as a constant reminder of the deepest parts of my sadness. im almost 24. they were a crucial part of my existence at 16 and now i kinda want to put them in a box forever until it feels right to open it back up. i dont necessarily look back with fondness anymore. it’s been a great time, and i’m grateful. but i’ve taken a long look at myself and realized that they’re in a chamber of my heart that wants to rest. the replacements shaped a part of me, caused friendships to bloom and prosper, and also caused me first and secondhand heartbreak. i didn’t think i could be anything without trying to fail first. and for their story to hook you at a tender age, it makes you want to shake your fist at the sky. but you can’t. it’s forever with you. like acne scars. and how you feel when it rains.
this is all a lie btw i am lying. replacements forever. joy is stored in the 8 dollars and 50 cents i bought a headache with. im hangin downtown. anywhere is better than here.
