“I’ve heard of your skill, sir, and certainly you’ve faced fiercer women than me.” Tired and prickly as she was, Arabella wasn’t about to barge into his home uninvited — so although he opened the door, she stayed put just over the threshold.

“I can’t say I’ve ever faced an elf that’s close to a thousand years in age. That should be enough to instill fear in any sensible man. Fighter or not.”  Tom took a step back from the door frame, making an uncertain gesture of welcome.

The meeting that the young King had called for been a thorough waste of time. Kai was frustrated that he actually thought inaction was the key, that starving out the Fangs would lead them to victory because ‘They have limited food’. She had scoffed silently in his presence but now…all she could do was tear up a flower she had plucked. When she looked up, her gaze settled on a familiar back. She walked to the man. “It is. But change is not anything but constant in our lives. So, I suppose it shouldn’t be strange. Nonetheless…some things do go our way, don’t they?”

Tom was surprised to hear a voice responding to his thoughts spoken aloud, he'd thought himself alone in the garden. "Some things do go our way, some things do not. The good things are too easily forgotten though, that’s the real problem with the world.”

“Hmm.” Brook made a show of thinking it over for a moment before tapping her cheek. “A kiss on the cheek sounds like a reasonable prize to me.” She suggested lightly with a small smile on her lips.

Tom chewed on his lip, acting as if he was considering a difficult choice. “You’ve convinced me. You will be rewarded with a kiss on the cheek if you admit that I was right all along.”

A Reflection

Whenever Tom found the time, he always enjoyed strolling about the gardens near the castle. It was when he’d sat himself down at the base of one of the tallest trees in the garden that Tom remembered, it was nineteen years today since he’d had his accident, falling from a tree just like this one. “It’s stange, isn’t it? To think about how much we’ve changed over the years.”

“Hmm. I’m not sure that you’re right. I suppose it could be a tortoise but will I get a prize if I agree with you?”

“I’m quite sure I am. That depends on what kind of prize you’re after, I’m not one to give things away freely.” That was far from the truth though, it only took a few weeks after Brook’s return for him to surrender his heart to her and there was nothing else he wasn’t willing to give her.

Tom sighed in relief, he was about to mount his horse again when a thought struck him. “If you are alright, might I ask what you’re doing on the side of the road well past midnight. You’re not apart of a hunting party are you?”

“One should always be confident in their abilities,” Elara agreed with his joking manner. “That’s assuming you could beat me. But don’t feel to bad when I inevitably take you down.” She joked.

“Ooh, you’re a brave woman, challenging a fighter straight out out of Abdera’s most dangerous fighting pits.” He said with a bold grin. “I won’t worry about that, My Lady. I haven’t lost a fight in months and I’m quite certain you haven’t even had a real fight in that long, you’re out of practice.”

“Go on, I’m sure it’s very fascinating.” Tom’s disinterest was obvious in his dry tone, as his eyes flicked between the pirate and his surroundings searching out something more interesting.

Brook smiled looking up at the cloud he had pointed out. It did indeed look like a tortoise but she always refused to agree with him on the shapes. “No don’t be ridiculous. That is a duck.”

Tom crossed his arms feigning upset. “You must be seeing things, Brook. It’s quite obviously a tortoise, it has the shell and everything!”

Brook looked around the empty clearing deciding that perhaps they could waste the day there. Grinning she she moved so she was just a bit in front of Tom and pushed at his chest so that eh would lay down in the grass. Grinning she laid in the grass next to him. “We shall lay here and watch the clouds then. You can argue with me about what shapes they’re forming.”

“Ah, that’s one of my favourite things to do.” Tom said, laughing as he leaned back to rest on the grass. “Look!” He said, pointing to a cloud floating above their heads, “Do you think that one looks like a tortoise?”

From just the smell, Angelus could tell the man was more drunk than what should be considered healthy…or safe. Getting up from the bed with the sheets still clinging to his toned waist, Angelus looked at the man with a smirk. “For one thing? This is my room. And secondly, you smell rancid.” Going over to his large brown leather carrier bag, it instantly opened before Angelus reached in and took out a glass bottle. Tossing it into the air and catching it again, he pulled off the cork only to hand it to the man in front of him. “Here, this should help.” The tonic inside smelled like a rotten corpse, but it was extremely effective with drunkards. 

Tom crossed his arms grumpily in response. “I don’t think so... Why would I be in here if it wasn’t my room?” In Tom’s opinion, it was a very logical response to Angelus’s words. Upon smelling the tonic offered to him, Tom almost knocked the bottle out of the other man’s hands in an attempt to keep it away from him. “Y’know, your help stinks.” Tom said sulkily before lifting the bottle to his lips.

Brook blushed a bright red as he kissed her forehead. She was pleased that he wanted to spend the day with her. She had missed him and she wanted him around as much as possible. “Great! It’s a date then. What shall we do first? Did you want to take a walk? Or we could go to your home if you just wanted a lazy day. Sometimes those are good.”

“Mm, especially when they’re with you.” Tom hummed his agreement, grinning lazily down at her. “I would be content just to sit here and enjoy the sun if you were by my side.”
