insane how many of you will just assume that a trans woman has a penis, and that it wouldn't be something she might have any dysphoria about
i bring a sort of βyou should maybe interrogate your so-called βpreferencesβ to make sure theyβre not literal textbook examples of severe unconscious biasβ vibe that my woke gay friends dont really like
There was a discourse over "bring Back bullying" on the internet. If you heard of it, what do you think about it?
Bullying never left, and if you say shit like that you should be made to bite the curb
i know things are hella grim in the nsfw/kink art circles especially in the last year --
but I'm hearing there's a NSFW-friendly ko-fi alternative built on atproto that's actively in the works, and being vetted by lawyers right now. as torrent-princess (OP) says, you should be able to swap out payment processors while keeping your account intact. this matters since even if stripe removes support, you'll still have a shop and all of your links intact. (ATproto is an infrastructure that bsky is built on, but is far bigger than bsky with far more opportunities.)
additionally, the Free Speech Coalition is working on a credit union specifically for adult work (including kink art) - here's the link so you can add your interest & support. Since this will be built by sex workers, there'll be far less risk of being debanked for spurious and puritanical reasons.
on a domain TLD level, there's an initiative here for a .furry domain built from the ground up by seasoned furries; it's unclear whether they'll support NSFW, but it's yet another promising turn of events for a group that's been similarly affected by censorship.
there are friends and allies out there helping to build a working parallel infrastructure. keep being vocal, keep supporting these initiatives when it's possible, and keep supporting your nsfw/kink artists. β₯
π How to Build a Culture Without Just Inventing Spices and Necklaces
(a worldbuilding roast. with love.)
So. Youβre building a fantasy world, and youβve just invented: β Three types of ceremonial jewelry β A spice that tastes like cinnamon if it were bitter and cursed β A holiday where everyone wears gold and screams at dawn
Cute. But thatβs not culture. Thatβs aesthetics.
And if your worldbuilding is all outfits, dances, and spice blends with vaguely mystical names, your storyβs probably going to feel like a cosplay convention held inside a Pinterest board.
Hereβs how to fix thatβaka: how to build a real, functioning culture that shapes your story, not just its vibes.
βββββββ β¦ βββββββ
π Culture Is Built on Power, Not Just Style
Ask yourself: β Whoβs in charge, and why? β Who has land? Who doesnβt? β Whatβs considered taboo, sacred, or punishable by death?
Culture is shaped by who gets to make the rules and who gets crushed by them. Thatβs where things like religion, family structure, class divisions, gender roles, and social expectations actually come from.
Start there. Not at the embroidery.
βββββββ β¦ βββββββ
2.πͺ Culture Comes From Conflict
Did this society evolve peacefully? Was it colonized? Did it colonize? Was it rebuilt after a war? Is it still in one?
β What was destroyed and mythologized? β What do the survivors still whisper about? β What do children get taught in school thatβsβ¦ suspiciously sanitized?
No culture is neutral. Every tradition has a history, and that history should taste like blood, loss, or propaganda.
βββββββ β¦ βββββββ
3.π§ Belief Systems > Customs Lists
Sure, rituals and holidays are cool. But what do people believe about: β Death? β Love? β Time? β The natural world? β Justice?
Example: A society that believes time is cyclical vs. one that sees time as linear will approach everythingβfrom prison sentences to griefβcompletely differently.
You donβt need to invent 80 gods. You need to know what those gods mean to the people who pray to them.
βββββββ β¦ βββββββ
4.π« Culture Controls Behavior (Quietly)
Culture shows up in: β What people apologize for β What insults cut deepest β What people are embarrassed about β Whatβs praised publicly vs. whatβs hidden privately
For instance: β A culture obsessed with stoicism wonβt say βI love you.β Theyβll say βHave you eaten?β β A culture built on legacy might prioritize ancestor veneration, archival writing, name inheritance.
This stuff? Way more immersive than giving everyone matching earrings.
βββββββ β¦ βββββββ
5. π Culture = Daily Life, Not Just Festivals
Sure, your MC might attend a funeral where people paint their faces blue. But what about: β Breakfast routines? β How people greet each other on the street? β Who cooks, and who eats first? β Whatβs considered βcleanβ or βproperβ? β How is parenting handled? Divorce?
Culture is what happens between plot points. It should shape your characterβs assumptions, language, fears, and habitsβwhether or not a festival is going on.
βββββββ β¦ βββββββ
6. π¬ Let Your Characters Disagree With Their Own Culture
A culture isnβt a monolith.
Even in deeply traditional societies, people: β Rebel β Question β Break rules β Misinterpret laws β Mock sacred things β Act hypocritically β Weaponize or resist whatβs expected
Let your characters wrestle with the culture around them. Thatβs where realism (and tension) lives.
βββββββ β¦ βββββββ
7.π§Ό Beware the βPretty = Goodβ Trap
Worldbuilding gets boring fast when: β The protagonistβs homeland is beautiful and pure β The enemyβs culture is dark and βbarbaricβ β Every detail just reinforces who the reader should like
You canβand shouldβchallenge the aesthetic hierarchy. β Let ugly things be beloved. β Let beautiful things be corrupt. β Let your MC romanticize their culture and then get disillusioned by it later.
βββββββ β¦ βββββββ
π TL;DR (but like, spicy): β Culture is not food and jewelry. β Culture is power, fear, memory, contradiction. β Stop inventing spices until you know who starved last winter. β Let your world feel lived in, not curated.
The best cultural worldbuilding doesnβt look like a list. It feels like a system. A pressure. A presence your characters canβt escapeβeven if they try.
Now go. Build something real. (You can add spices later.)

"The middle class is not our enemy" yeah and the people you need to be convincing of that is the fucking middle class.
Sorry I fucking hate these condescending ass posts. How dare the poor get uppity at people. Meanwhile half of the middle class is voting to eradicate homeless people off the streets.
They're okaying means testing because of racism and are fine with anti-homeless architecture because homeless people are dirty and scary and want candidates who are "tough on crime" I really do mean it. The people you need to convince of that are the middle class.
I fucking hate it here
For those of you with android devices, you can use the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) standalone app control program to get rid of all the bloatware, data mining, and AI crap - no coding needed!

There are also Android-based alternatives like GrapheneOS and LineageOS, which are pretty easy to install. These are unfortunately available for a more limited range of devices (Graphene is ironically Pixel only, while Lineage supports more), but it's very worth checking out whether one of them might work for your phone.
GrapheneOS is a security and privacy focused mobile OS with Android app compatibility.
LineageOS Android Distribution
Typing this from Graphene now, in fact. But, both of those take the Android Open Source Project, without all the bloatware--and largely de-Google the whole thing. They give you much more control over privacy and what the apps you choose to install can do and access on your phone.
I know Graphene sandboxes everything, including the optionally installed Google Play Services which a lot of apps unfortunately require to run. (Lineage uses an alternative to Play Services instead.) So, you can install what would normally be unacceptably intrusive apps and just lock them away from pulling any funny shit with your data, or phoning home. Including the couple of Google things I do still keep around.
I also prefer running much more transparent, privacy-respecting open source apps where possible. Besides the transparency, I'd rather avoid the shitty tech corps entirely where I can. There are pretty good alternatives available for a lot of the usual suspects.
AlternativeTo lets you find apps and software for Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, iPad, Android, Android Tablets, Web Apps, Online, Windows Tab

I hate the people I hate online just as much as I hate the people I hate in "real life". That's called Digital Equality. Act now to ensure Digital Equality is never taken away!
Anon, you will be glad to know that I actually have a completely joke-Human-AU where DU drow is a welsh native called Drew with an experimental post-rock/punk band. Shadowheart and Astarion are there but probably not doing what you expected them to do.
I forgot to mention Shadowheart also takes care of their merch tables βοΈ And Astarion has an online law degree that he mostly uses to confuse people into doing what he wants.
There's a book that we had in our house growing up that I was obsessed with as a kid. It was just called "PAKISTAN: PAINTINGS BY LIN YONG AND SU HUA" and it was an art book of 100+ paintings/sketches by two Chinese artists who travelled thru Pakistan in 1978 and 1981, a sort of travelogue of their trip, and to little-kid me, it was some of the most beautiful things I'd ever seen. I have no idea why we had that book, but I would stare at it for hours, and it made me wish I could draw/paint/do whatever it was that these artists had managed to do.
Anyway, we've moved house a bunch of times and I lost track of the book and haven't seen it for probably two decades now. But I think about it now and again, and had struggled to find it over the years, but I finally, finally got my hands on a copy of my own and i want to cry haha
I was afraid that maybe the art isn't as good as I remembered, being just a kid and all, but I cracked it open and nope, it hits me just the way it used to. Maybe even more now. It's so fucking pretty. Have some random pages:
