FINALLY READY!
ms-a-knife.tumblr.com
The two videos I've just posted are how I see the world going. The entire message I’m trying to include in my music is that life is too valuable to be thrown away by corruption made up from thin air, the whole idea of money is nothing without someone in control of it. The point being, as a human race we should be standing up for those less fortunate, homeless, abusive situations where it does seems it’s impossible to get out, both racial and gender equality. The list goes on and on, no one life is more important than the other and with police attacking it’s citizens in America, Mexico, Brazil, the list is endless with governments lying to their people, it’s so disappointing to see the human race fall so badly. IF Dr Michio Kaku is right on his theory of humans progressing to a type 1 civilisation we need new power.
Shikimic acid
Shikimic acid, more commonly known as its anionic form shikimate, is a cyclohexene, a cyclitol and a cyclohexanecarboxylic acid. It is an important biochemical metabolite in plants and microorganisms. It appears in the list of Group 3 carcinogens of the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
Shikimic acid is a precursor for:
indole, indole derivatives and aromatic amino acid tryptophan and tryptophan derivatives such as the psychedelic compound dimethyltryptamine (DMT)
DMT
N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT or N,N-DMT) is a psychedelic compound of the tryptamine family.
I’ve recently started a project, Shikimate with a Isabelle Astley who will be performing with me at Leeds Beckett City Student Union. The band, Shikimate is based around electronic instruments, very similar but with a more up beat tempo to my own project. The video above is a clip we’ll be using for our first song “4 Stages.”Â
Taking a different approach to experimental is Thee Silver Mt Zion Orchestra, having a standard music group (2 guitars, vocals and drums) with 2 violinists who play just haunting music that grips you so well. I've taken a lot of inspiration from this band.Â

Experimental Music
Wikipedia describes experimental music as a compositional tradition that arose in the mid-20th century, particularly in North America, of music composed in such a way that its outcome is unforeseeable. Which i do agree with, but experimental music has taken a whole new turn with the technology available, it is so easily to manipulate sounds compared to how hard it use to be. John Cage is deemed as one of the most respectable artists within this genre with his most famous piece being 4 minutes of silence cause controversy as to whether to even call it music.Â
Everyday new artists are becoming more and more unique and experimental, CocoRosie being one, with the mixture of Bjork like vocals and opera, with harp, clarinet, synth, beat-box, and the use of children's toys.Â

This is the final version, maybe a few tweaks are still needed
This is a recent composition I've started - So far, it sounds too washy but I don't want to take too much of the speech out because that's taking the attention away from the message I'm trying to display. Also it needs more of a punch, it's all well for chilling but it sounds to empty.Â
Another side project I have been working on recently is I have bought an electric violin which I want to use somewhere in my pieces, with different effects andpedals. BOHU, the band I mentioned earlier are probably my main reason for this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1CM28D0Cy0 I would love to be able to play the electric violin and I have some knowledge of how but I really need to brush up on it and think about getting some lessons to start me off.

I have such a wide taste of music it’s hard for me to pick a genre to play in but I would say I have been enlightened by Woodkid’s music. A French director who has worked with Katy Perry for California Dreamin’ and Ellie Fanning with his own work.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmc21V-zBq0
Woodkid himself is a story, as shown in Run Boy Run, a little boy separating from his roots and heading to the cold, metallic city as part of the Golden Age, which is the name of his newest album. Woodkid has the ability to adapt classical music to a modern structure.
Woodkid is the artist where I have got the inspiration for my music and I want to incorporate this classical music with a modern twist into my own thing. I want to start getting really experimental with this instead of singing including speeches that have currently been on the news and the bullshit the media tells you and tries to eradicate the truth. Listening to how reporters speak about human lives makes me sick and the only way to get the news out is listening to independent news sources such as Vice or through music.

The idea of watching a film first came to me when I was watching Nordic Giants in March 2014 who was supporting God Is an Astronaut at the Cockpit. The overall performance Nordic Giants gave was better than the band I originally went to see. After cancelling their gig at Brudenell Social Club with A Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra they put on another gig with BOHU – Band of Hope Union.

This is a link to Nordic Giants – Mechanical Minds Live at The Pavilion Theatre in Brighton.
Here, you can see the attention they have from the audience. Both wearing tribal skull head gear at either side of the screen, I think what really attracts me to this band is it seems like there’s a underlying message to what you’re being shown. The overall performance was so well timed, the two musicians have different instruments to play throughout the songs and they are spot on with every note, changing from guitar with a bow to drums whilst the other musician is changing from synth and piano to playing the trumpet and cymbals, they are absolutely mesmerising to watch. By far the best live performance I’ve ever seen.

The experimental route I would like to go down is following artists such as David Lynch and Bjork, who used lightening rods in one of her songs. I would like to complete a small idea like this. During college I was obsessed with Brian Eno and his work such as Music for Airports, with the ambience I tried using different sounds such as buses opening and closing the doors, people talking, glasses being put down, smashing. I think all these noises can be incorporated into a song. Using sounds that other people have made and then sampling them in is at least one thing I want to try.
Recently I’ve just bought a Dictaphone so I can at least attempt to get a rough idea of what I could do.
Angeleno Badalamenti who works closely with David Lynch and has worked on pieces such as Twin Peaks, was obsessed with working with industrial sounds I’d love to look at his work more clearly and see if I can work with something here.
I’d like to follow the idea of System of a Down who has their own website showing the affected areas of the Armenian Crisis and shows what you could do to help. They have also organised a #wakeupthesouls tour reaching out to their fans which have probably forgotten the message of what System try to do which I will be attending. System are another band who has a lot of political input and they have been an inspiration to go into the political writing. At the moment to me, this is more of an art project and I know it’s going to be a long time until I am completely happy with what I am doing but I know it’s doable. Right now I feel like my ideas are scattered around and theirs is so much work for what I want to do yet it feels worth it.
I intend to put together at least 3 or 4 songs which will include all these elements for a live performance whilst thinking about the visual aesthetic and have an online presence.
There are so many artsits I can take inspiration from but it’s hard to put it all into writing. Imagine listening to a classical/ post rock/ ambient/ electronic / droned mix. Like Sigur Ros but with a more industrial sound and speeches relating to what’s going on at the moment.
With the way the industry is changing I feel as though this is the best time to experiment and I feel as though if I am left alone with some guidance this can be a really exciting project for me. I realize how much work I have but it would all be worth it if my music works out the way I plan. It would be nice to source the musicians I need but at the time I’m stuck using logic.
Proposal
For Live music and performance this year I have decided to start a new project completely alone. The idea is to put on a performance but the audience is to follow what’s going on with the film and my music is more to get the audience’s attention. Like a Wizard of Oz idea, I would be behind a curtain or in the background; I don’t feel as if I need to be the centre of attention on stage. If there’s the option to show a group of people a more important message I’d rather do that. Also I have terrible stage freight and it’s a way to counteract this. For months now I have been thinking about what to base my music on, I’ve thought a lot about soundtracks and how they affect your mood so much, and at one time I thought about writing music for bizarre/ abstract film following a more Danny Elfman kind of feel but I didn’t feel as though this was for me.
Over the past couple of years I have been reading heavily into the corruption and police brutality, religion killing millions of people over centuries and with 2014 being such a disgrace with the unlawful killing of black citizens in America such as Michael Brown, Eric Garner and Ezell Ford, to name a few and then the overall case of #blacklivesmatter. The world is so ignorant to what’s going on at the moment. To me, why is no one aware that a month ago 100 people were executed in North Korea for watching films they weren’t supposed to? Cases such as Cytonia Brown forced into being a sex worker at 16 and have been given a life sentence for shooting someone who tried raping her. I’d like to write music for these people, the people who aren’t getting heard. I’m sure many people could disagree that music is for partying or relaxing, you shouldn’t have to be given a world update when you’re listening to music but I’d rather write about world news rather than the typical things like love and feelings.
