He’d healed from everything that happened in DC - physically if nothing else. He and Sam met with Fury and Nat at the cemetery just before everyone went their own ways. Steve and Sam wen looking for Bucky, but all their leads ran dry and, after several months, they returned to the States. Sam went back to his work at the VA and Steve left his apartment in DC and headed back to New York, to Brooklyn - to Hell’s Kitchen to be exact. He found an apartment and did what he could to help the people in the neighborhood, many who’d had family there when Steve had been a kid. 

A year after DC, the Avengers had yet to be needed and Steve had learned, through updates from Nat, that Phil Coulson was alive and was heading up the rebuild of SHIELD and that Agent Hill had been hired by Stark Industries. Steve was glad to hear that everything was going as well as could be expected for everyone else.

Steve, however, wasn’t doing too well by himself. He would find himself chasing ghosts, hoping to find Bucky but always finding himself alone once more. He began to frequent the bars and clubs, sleeping and eating less than he should, and for the most part, looking less like a hero and more like a bedraggled man in need of help. He just didn’t know who to call, who to talk with, or how to fix anything that was wrong.

And so, in time, it go to the point where he rarely ever left his apartment and then it became so bad that he stopped going out at all. Delivery was his only way to get food now, and he’d even stopped getting his mail from downstairs. He was… alone… depressed… and only spiraling down even more…

Tony'd heard that Steve was in the city.  He didn't bother the man because he figured he'd had his own stuff going on and didn't need company.  But he still heard bits and pieces from when he'd check in.  He still saw the others pretty frequently, whether it be helping Phil with technical aspects of the new agency or grabbing a drink with Clint.  And when he heard that Steve had become a sort of recluse, he decided it was time to pay the guy a visit.  He didn't intend to guilt Steve into going out, just to drop by and offer a little company.

So he popped in with no warning, easily figuring out exactly where Steve lived.  He knocked on the apartment door holding a hot pizza in one hand and a freshly baked pie from one of his favorite sweet shops in the other.  He also had a messenger bag slung over one shoulder, and there might have been an incredibly expensive bottle of wine in it.  But Steve didn't need to know the price, just that it was delicious.  "Hey, Cap?  Ya in there? It's me... Tony."

Well he certainly seemed to care a lot about his friendship with Bruce. That was something, though she couldn’t claim to have warmed any more to him upon that revelation. She didn’t offer him the courtesy of responding to him as he challenged her; she hadn’t asked if she could dance with him. He’d effectively told her that she would dance and enjoy it. What else did he expect from somebody with more braincells than most of the hangers on he seemed to acquire put together. Rather than using the door he had pointed out for her use, she bypassed it completely and found herself a quiet seat near the back, nursing her drink.

That was where Bruce found her when he eventually found his way back to the party. He didn’t to ask if she had met the host. The scowl on her face and the harassed look suggested plainly that they had met. He sat himself down beside her to listen to her side of the story, offering her a few choice words as he noted there was no hint of apology in her voice. “I’ll deal with it…” he sighed, more to himself than the woman as he pulled himself back to his feet, scanning the crowd for any sign of the man.

He was propping up the bar. Now why wasn’t he surprised by this? He pretty much knew how the next conversation would pan out as he made his way across the room to take a spot by the man’s side. “I see you and Neva have met..” he notes, ordering a glass of water from the bar tended as he passed. “Look…Don’t judge her too harshly, okay? I’m not going to ask you two to kiss and make up….but could I ask that you take her attitude with a pinch of salt?” He awaited the verbal onslaught that was bound to be heading his way, trying his best to be diplomatic in how he approached the subject.

"You see…erm…well Neva’s mother was killed by a Stark weapon a few days after she was born. You remember the Russian attack on the Greek city of Patras around 32 years ago? Well one of Stark Industries weapons hit the hospital and she was one of only a handful of survivors." He didn’t want to make the man feel bad. He just hoped that it would go some way to explain the woman’s attitude and her apparently reluctance to believe anything but the worst about him. "Now can you see why she might be a little biased? I…I was hoping that if she got to meet you….maybe get to know yyou….she might have her mind changed. Both Neva and Tony were very important to him, and he hated the thought that they would hate each other. Both were good people.

Neva just clearly hadn’t given the best first impression.

Tony sighed and ran his hand through his hair.  "I get that, and that's terrible, but that wasn't me!  I had nothing to do with it."  He closed his eyes for a long moment then opened them to look back at Bruce, a sort of defeat clear in them.  "What's it gonna take for people to stop judging me for shit my father did, Bruce?  I admit, I was a complete ass for a long time.  But I've changed, and I'm doing good now.  I'm helping.  But nobody gives a shit about that."

He drank the last of his glass and pushed it forward for the bartender to fill.  "It's not about your friend.  It's everybody.  She's only one person that thinks that way about me, it just happened to be at a party for something I'm really proud of.  You should probably take her and get out of here.  She's not exactly having a fantastic time, and I know you only came to keep me from givin' you hell.  Go on, get outta here.  I'm gonna go upstairs and have a good conversation with a bottle of Scotch."
