fiction can be really dangerous there might be a deeply tragic woman in there who starts living in your head forever
it pisses me off sooo bad when people call cass orphan . like thats not her name 😭😭😭😭 like whyyyy its BATGIRL thats BATGIRL not orphan she hasnt been orphan for a hot minute guys
If anything the Orphan alias just feels like an angsty teen rebellion cause her mom is very much alive, just in prison
When I finish the toilet paper I usually go “I’ll restock in a bit” before forgetting all about it, leaving me stranded next time I need to take a dump, which is very telling of everything wrong with me. Give me three hours, a ginger beer, a bad mood, and I could write an in depth essay psychoanalysing myself until I begin to question the ground i walk on
Had a random thought about what if the Wizard's attitudes towards potential Champions was like how Nat Geo is with animals they're filming.
I.e. non-interference as it's 'nature'
And the Wizard only steps in when they become 'worthy' because then it becomes under his jurisdiction.
But with Billy, the Wizard had seen the potential brilliance that is C.C. Batson die due to his non-interference and just like with the penguins, the Wizard went fuck it, this is cruel, the boy isn't ready yet but I'm not losing another one and Billy becomes the Champion.
Wizard: *Seeing Billy suffer* "I know this is natural, but it's bloody hard to watch."
Wizard: *Billy about to die in the street* "Fuck it we ball."

i love that a lot of the flashback/memory scenes are important to the plot/to develop grace's character, but others are purely to establish details andy weir thought were important. yeah the scenes were stratt pirated the entire internet or them deciding to add a centrifuge could've just been a line or two instead of whole scene, but instead we got stratt and grace being really petty for no reason, and that's beautiful
Framed differently Beast Games is really a psychological thriller about a plastic person spending obscene amounts of money desperately trying to prove to himself that everybody is secretly as empty inside and obsessed with money as he is. And failing.
I think we all need to collectively start getting angrier about the objectification of Cassandra Cain. It feels like we're all just resigned to it at this point since being both Chinese and a child assassin/living weapon type she sits at the intersection of the hypersexualization of Asian women and the fetishization of abused & emotionally damaged waifs therefore comic artists cramming crotch/ass shots in wherever they'll fit is so par for the course as to be cliche. Fuck that though. That is all the more reason to demand better.
Everyone needs to stop saying death of the author when what they mean is separating the art from the artist. Like FR stop it.
I know it's mainly just ignorance of what the term means but I do wonder if this happens in part bcos 'death of the author' sounds so dramatic like oh this author is dead to me, I don't care about them anymore. Whereas 'separating the art from the artist' is a lot more neutral and well. In CERTAIN CASES it is kind of immediately apparent that you cannot.
TO REITERATE:
Death of the Author is a term coined by Roland Barthes for his essay of the same name in 1967.
In brief: death of the author is the concept that analysis of a work of art should not be focused on the artist's intent; the artist's intended reading of their own work is just A reading and no more valid than anyone else's.
A good straightforward example of this in practice is the response to Andy Weir and Project Hail Mary. Weir is adamant that his work contains no politics but I would say that PHM is pretty clearly a story about climate change.
You can apply death of the author to any work of fiction and it has nothing to do with whether the author is a good or bad person.
You don't have to grieve alone.
This poor girl holds so much guilt and self-loathing it's honestly heartbreaking. In so many of her stories so far she simply cannot view herself beyond her capacity for violence. All she's ever been is someone else's weapon and, even now that she's escaped, she'll never even get the luxury of being a dulled blade. She will always always always remember how to kill someone, or hurt them irreparably, and so on.
In that last panel, Cass just saved Jim Gordon's life. She is very explicitly shown to be understanding and compassionate of who Gordon is to Barbara and how much he matters to her, and now Cass has managed to stop her own father from assassinating him. She convinced him to put down his guns even, to give up and look at her and smile at her.
It's a very objectively good thing that she's done, and yet her perspective is still framed as blood being on her hands while her father smiles down at her. Not a hero, not a moment of redemption, but still exactly what she's always been.
Aside from her first attempt to fall to her death in that panel, she repeatedly throws herself into martyrdom, laying down her life in order to save someone else. It's especially addressed in Gotham Knights #2 when she sacrifices herself to save Batman. He recognizes the action, and ends up leaving her behind in order to make her own decision. Swim back out or drown with the ship.
Now would be a really great time for tumblr's image limit to increase so I could show the panel, but she reaches out as he goes. Cass wants to be saved, she wants to be good, but she's forced to face her thoughts as the water flows in about whether someone like her deserves to be saved and can be good. If what she's done and is capable of is all she is, or if it's just... something she knows.
Her storyline so far is fucking devastating and I'm really looking forward to watching her grow through it.

I had a similar dream a few days ago. Why do they make us suffer so
i feel so defensive and protective of people with ARFID like if i had a disorder that made my brain register 90% of food as poison for no reason and i had a bazillion people on the internet constantly calling me a manchild who needs to just grow up and stop being a picky eater i would start killing people
people with ARFID and people with very few autism safe foods and people with contamination OCD and people in ED recovery and everyone else with a complicated relationship with food that no one takes seriously GET BEHIND ME!!!!!!!
