I totally gotta make a separate post just to ramble on about how I made this purely for me myself and maybe other people too lol. cuz this BEAST took 4+ months and I had quite a lot of fun with it.

First off here’s a side by side of the different stages of the animatic I have
the timing is off cuz I magic-ed the finished one with some editing but I think it’s hilarious to see the differences with the first one. I think it’s neat to see how much of my original ideas stayed the same after so much revision too, like there quite a lot that’s pretty much just the base sketch but yk looks actually good lol
So I got the idea for this way back in may on like a random Wednesday night. I was busy with graduation and working at the time so I did like nothing with it till a month or two later. Where I preceded to make the crappiest, roughest, storyboard imaginable for this thing and sent it to my best friend to see if I was actually insane or not, hoping someway she saw my insane vision for this thing.
here’s the original paper I drew all this stuff out on cuz for some reason I decided on paper storyboards was the way this was gonna go. And if you can’t follow what is happening at all on these pages don’t worry me too bro.
You can really see my genius vision at its top quality at the part where the nightmare scene ended up being where all I have for that whole like 3rd of the video is just “sick animation” …the amount of trust I had in my abilities was quite impressive in my opinion. Yeesh
Moving on after a few eager and very encouraging texts from my bsf I moved on to actually making the barely legible hieroglyphics I drew into more refined storyboards
Look how much clearer my ideas are becoming! It’s a miracle!

At this point I was very excited because I was ready to just take individual pictures, string em together to the song and post it, but the overachieving and completionist in my was like nah bruh if your gonna do this you might aswell do it all the way
Then you see me working on bigger sized storyboards on my lunch break sitting in my car :P But now the amount of physical media I have from this project actually outweighs the amount of digital media so I count that as a win
These are all just scans of the papers but they were all done on 9x12 paper so each frame was quite a lot bigger then the original tiny storyboard.
Doing these bigger versions really helped flush out the ideas for each frame that would’ve taken forever to do digitally on the final product. And made me feel like the storyboard artists that work on cartoons where they line up the storyboards on a wall to flush out how the episode is gonna go, maybe that’s just phineas and ferb idk but regardless still cool. Getting all the poses right in these were hit or miss from the base drawings and how much detail I actually did.
My boy Papyrus was a struggle to figure out his gosh darn head shape from all those angles, Sans too but significant less so. It took a few weeks to finish up all 15 pages of storyboards but very rewarding cuz no way would the end product look as good as it does if I skipped this step
After finishing the storyboards on actual paper I scanned all the frames and started lining them digitally. This took so much time becuase I was going through and making each one a finished drawing. Like there was 9 drawings per page and I made each its own finished drawing. And for the ones that are slightly different then the previous one was SO HARD TO LINE UP GOSH! I 110% made this part much harder for myself then I had to be, but everything’s clearer with hindsight ig.
If I went back to this part I would first actually get a better scan of each paper which right off the bat would make everything so much easier with lining up the frames and another thing I’d do is actually learn my dumb animation system instead of doing it much much later on in the project.
Back to the actual process I started lining and coloring each page 9 at a time which took forever but I locked in so hard for the ‘nightmare scene’ which had like completely new backgrounds for almost ever frame which is pretty insane idk how I did that lol
I debated having different color schemes for the animatic or just normally coloring it but I think the blue greenish tones worked the best. And I obviously wanted the ‘nightmare scene’ to stand out and be different.
like the ‘nightmare scene’ I wanted the sadder or more ‘darker’(ish) part to be visually darker to add to the mood and vibe I was trying for and I think it turned out very well. I tried to limit actually using black in the background and going more for dark blue so it would mean more when I actually used it and stand out. So I had to adjust a bunch of frames to work out the best color contrasts.
Fun fact I had a bunch of the frames for that part colored yellow like the actual judgement hall but changed it to red for more of that nightmare feel.
Definitely the right choice but the top right one looked dope so it was fine either way
Up until the nightmare part coloring was very straightforward, I didn’t want to go to detailed on the shading or background but I got carried away in some of them.
I really wanted the nightmare scene and the ending to stand out and be impactful not only narratively but also visually and it wouldn’t work to have the ending be the same color palate as the ‘nightmare scene’ so I decided for the very end to be fully colored and not really have a palate but the sunset colors for after the barrier opened was me trying to have a good inbetween or transition.
(I left in the bottom left one cuz I laugh to much when I see it)
The ‘normal’ colored one and really sweet to me and I just love the skelebros so much. And ig you could interpret how I added the red in for one of the last panels to be sans only seeing red in the judgement room but maybe I was just to lazy to color it yellow.. we’ll never know :>

aight weird lil thing I noticed about papyrus and sans’ house
their rooms don’t line up with the rest of the interior (I scaled the rooms down a bit to make the entrance the same size as the door)
however, when you swap their positions it’s a perfect fit
the space between their rooms is also a bit larger than sans’ room, with the bone painting at the spot where you’d expect the door to a third room to be.
so like this /could/ mean I’m just reading too much into things however it could also mean gaster’s room used to be there and idk about yall but i know what i’m going with
also interesting to note maybe is that papyrus’ room is the only room in the entire game that doesn’t have any background music, not even after you beat asriel and “reunited” plays everywhere else.
