Do you have any good "medic hacks"? Like an everyday item that can be used medically that one wouldn't normally think of?
Small 5 gallon trash bags are good for many things. For exposed abdominal contents, the bag acts as a moisture barrier. Along with damp gauze and whatever hemorrhage control techniques, the garbage bag will prevent the intestines and other organs from drying out. They can be used as a chest seal with tape. After using a great deal of your supplies on a patient, they can be used to clean up the area. Use one to cover your bag in the event of bad weather. Or to collect pieces of patients. They weigh next to nothing and take up little room. I have several in each of my aid bags.
D-rings or carabiners. Can be used as a makeshift tourniquet in conjunction with other materials such as a shirt. Sometimes our aid bags are some stuffed with items, repacking and zipping can be difficult. If you have to suddenly move positions, a quick carabiner on the carry handles can secure it enough to move a little without your bag contents spilling everywhere. And they can be used to hang your bag, IV fluids, etc.
Tubular nylon webbing. A 26ā section, ends tied together with a water knot, and a carabiner. This can be used to make a swiss seat, a patient litter, a patient harness for hoisting, or a drag harness. I may make a video or post some pics at a later time.
Other tips. 1) Keep like items together, such as IV supplies or hemorrhage control items. Ziplock bags with clear markings make finding the right items easier. 2) Small ābleeder bagsā are nice to have. A ziplock with some 4x4 gauze, rolled gauze, an elastic dressing, etc. Maybe a tourniquet in there if you had extra. For situations with mass casualties (MASCAL), these come in handy. Toss them out to each patient for self aid or to first responders. 3) Buddy tab your gear. @skinnymedic did a post and video about it a while back. Do this with your tape as well. Take about an inch or so and fold it back on itself so itās easy to grab. Bloodied gloves make it difficult to open packaged med supplies and tape. 4) If you need to, put a little extra baby powder in your gloves for ease application with sweaty hands.

So, BatCop and I are considering conducting/hosting/attending various public safety training classes up here in the midwesterly quadrant of this great nation. Perhaps things to do with security, firearms courses, maybe sponsor an EMT Basic class. Just seeking ideas at the moment and seeing if there's any interest sparked in possible attendees.
It's a known fact, you can *never* have too much training...! Beneficial to both those old and new in the public safety sector- as well as those who just wanna kind of see what things are about over here behind the various blue/red/green/silver lines. I'm just getting into the field myself and BatCop is just getting *back* into the field after a long hiatus, so there's always more to be learned. Thoughts, ideas, questions, comments, concerns- all welcome.

Quick intro here- I'm TopCop, I'm female and work in public safety. I'm the funny one (or so I like to think). My partner is BatCop. He's the experienced one, with almost 20 years in various public safety sub-fields. Essentially, I'm the rookie boot and he's the old salt. :-P Looking forward to see what this 'Tumblr' thing has to offer.
