I hate how we didn’t get to see Hotch’s backstory/childhood. I remember him mentioning that he collected pennies when he was a kid, but not much else. I hate how the writers just reduced him to a stoic boss who’s a deadbeat dad and has a dead wife. The most characterization we get off him is relating to other people in his life- jack, haley, beth, the team. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t really have much of a life outside of work- but they should show that. They should have shown him recovering from Haley’s death all alone, not just moving on five episodes later with Beth. They should have shown his ear injury more, especially since he didn’t really have anyone to take care of/ be with at that time. Forever mad at the criminal minds writers.

how appropriate that the cm writers named the woman that stays 'at home' in quantico, the woman that weaves together the necessary data, the woman that the whole team relies on: penelope...

so there's kind of two routes to hotch's Stiff Bitch wardrobe that you can take. the first is that his parents thought caring about your appearance was frivolous and demeaned him for trying to dress well, and so when hotch went off to school he viciously assembled a closet of the most uppercrust suits he could imagine (which has pared down to more classic colours and silhouettes since but in this route i Do think he dabbled in slightly outrageous ties first). dressing formally became a way to quietly (actually silently) express himself and it served him well throughout school and prosecuting and by the time he makes it to the BAU, it doesn't matter that he's the fanciest man in nearly every room he's in at all. he's toned down the pastel pocket squares and realized his dad was wrong: people do take him seriously with his jackets tailored and his pants pressed. yes he looks like a curmudgeonly fop but maybe getting his collar starched is like his version of queening out. ummm okay ignore that last part i dont know what came over me......... i stand by everything i said before that.

the other route (more painful) is that his parents were very Upright Proper Southerners. like they would turn their nose up at sid mashburn because it's too flamboyant but they'd also be kind of obsessed with the concept. maybe this means his dad kicks the snot out of smallaaron for not tucking his shirt in before church; maybe it means his mom made him bleach the stains out of his white tennis shoes without gloves. theres a sliding scale here and there doesn't necessarily have to be abuse involved, but i think no matter what, being raised with this mindset gives you a complex about clothing as a way of carrying yourself around the world and conveying yourself to others. in this route, the stiff bitch wardrobe is kind of like a suit of armour that he cannot take off. he doesnt feel like himself when he's wearing anything other than the same outfit he always saw his father in.

emily prentiss is canonically better at chess than reid... she speaks multiple extremely difficult languages... she managed to convince hotch to give her a chance in less than a minute... she is funny and dazzlingly charming but we are forgetting that she is ALSO a genius!!!

hotch chooses to wear that three-piece getup each day he CHOOSES IT!!! guys. in s1 he and morgan are both in suits while Gideon The Academic wears more casual clothing. i know we all know this but walk with me. as time goes on morgan starts relaxing ,starts dropping the jacket, starts wearing henleys and even jeans. not hotch. NOT HOTCH!! theyre gonna bury him in that damn tie. and the dominant narrative is that its his armour its his FBI costume etc etc etc but GUYS!!! i think it keeps the inside in as much as it keeps the outside out....

and we see that he sleeps in boxers and an undershirt so when he has to abandon haley in the middle of the night he can just pull pants on and a shirt over and hes ready to go... his sleep clothes are also his work clothes ladies he doesnt know how to live without a war
