This is my interim draft of my research report proposal. I still have to add all of my online sources and do the timeline, I will also be making edits after I have had feedback from Lyndsey
I Have also put together a portfolio website, which you can find here: http://toriloveridge.mystrikingly.com/#top. I have been meaning to do this for a while so now that I have a CV and up to date showreel I think this is a good time to try making one. I chose strikingly as the website host as it looked easy to make and some of my favourite illustrators such as Myra Hild (http://myrahild.mystrikingly.com/) use it. It is free and there are no ads embedded which makes it good for a first time portfolio and also feels professional. I split it into different sections showcasing different areas of animation and drawing so that i am showing I can be useful in different areas of animation production but also showing the areas I specialise in.
I put together a showreel as part of the personal planning project as I wanted to have a reel that was up to date so that I could use the CV I created to apply for some internship positions. I felt that I wanted to apply this year if there were open positions even though they may not be able to take place I want to try and start getting people to see my work so that I can begin to gauge where I am nest going to fit in the industry.
The Celluloid Closet - Watch Notes
- When you don’t see representation of yourself in films you often feel alone
- Movies ‘from the beginning relied on homosexuality as a sure fire source of humour’
- Ideas about who you are come from what you experience and we learn from movies what out means to have ‘sexuality’
- Chaplin Movie ‘Behind the Screen’ 1917
- Stereotyping - swishy mime was so ingrained in the portrayal of the ‘gay man’
- ‘The Sissy’ - The first of Hollywoods Gay ‘characters’, Made everyone feel either mor manly or more manly by occupying the space in between the two gender roles, he did not appear to have a sexuality and so he was allowed to thrive in films because he was homosexual only subliminally and yet everyone knew that they should be read as gay - some people like the idea of visibility at any cost but some people feel very strongly that it is wrong to have this type of character ‘there is no sin like being a woman’ ‘when a man dresses as aa woman everybody laughs but when a woman dresses as a man nobody laughs’
- Queen Christina - based on true monarch and lesbian of Sweden
- 1920s and 30s - film got a lot more ‘raunchy’ and so the catholic community introduced the Hayes code, which was seldom taken seriously but by 1935 the legion of decency backed by the Catholic Church and threatened boycotts forcing Hollywood to ‘play by the rules’
- Among the things restricted were: open mouthed kissing, lustful embraces, sex perversion, seduction, rape, abortion, prostitution and white slavery, nudity, obscenity and profanity
- The Hayes code did not erase homosexuality from film but it did unfortunately give them a new identity, as villains
- Rebecca 1940 - the words homosexuality/lesbianism is never explicitly mentioned however there are moments where the former housekeeper appears to be obsessed with her, particularly the scene where she opens the underwear draw
- Oriental music, perfume and other hints were used to show a characters sexuality where it couldn’t have been explicitly said
- Hitchcock’s film ‘Rope’ features two gay lovers as the villains
- Sometimes censors turned a blind eye to lesbians if they were kept ‘safely behind bars’ such as ‘Caged’ 1959, supposedly the message is ‘isn’t it terrible for a woman to go to prison’ a warning about what women could become
- In 50s America ‘seeming gay was as bad as being gay’
- Rebel without a Cause - adoration of James Dean’s character, the relationship wasn’t intended to be read in a homosexual light but the film is about intimacy and allowing med to have feelings in an era where it was looked down upon
- ‘Ben-Hur’ - the roman character is in love with Ben-Hur, it is never explicitly said but the writers have written it to be perfectly clear
- Many ‘characters can only express themselves indirectly just as we (the lgbt community) can often only express ourselves indirectly’
- “The Children’s Hour’ 1962, homosexuality was finally become more widespread on screen but only as something ‘nice people didn’t talk about’ - the two character have a very intense emotional scene where one of them cries about ruining both of their lives and feeling dirty and disgusting, the actual subject was never discussed in rehearsal but watching it you can see exactly what she is trying to express. This is a difficult moment because watching it is quite hard, the feeling of sadness that she has for herself is still mirrored in today’s society and felt by many of the LGBT community
- ‘I felt that something dreadful was going to happen to me, something I wouldn’t be able to turn back once i had actually had sex with another man and that the end of that road would be suicide, and i got that impression form the movies’
- ‘Growing up in the 60s all we had were images of unhappy, separate, suicidal gay people’
- ‘You must pay and you must suffer - if thou are gay you have to do real panacea you have to die!’
- Cabaret 1972, is amongst the first films which openly accepted homosexuality and after this things began to change much more quickly
- It was easier for Hollywood to show a block character as queer than a white persona as queer
- ‘Cruisin’ was the cause of a lot of anti-homosexuality
- ‘Making love ‘1982’ - was one of the first films to deal with the topic of homosexuality sensitively and in a non sexually explicit way, it was groundbreaking
- For women, there was a very different view of sexual scenes, generally there is am image of femininity that comes across as much less threatening, female audiences generally don’t find it ‘offensive’ sand make audiences either find it non-threatening or titillating
- Women are often not taken seriously in this kind of context, it is usually perceived as experimental or ‘a phase’
I have made this very rough animatic from my story boards and edited audio showing roughly how my piece of the animation would look were I able to continue with the project.
This is an initial CV I drafted for an internship at the Line Animation. I wanted to go for a bolder style of cv for a studio like this which proves themselves on being fun for and by creatives. I understand however that I should make a more formally structured version in case I wanted to apply to something more corporate however for now I think this was an appropriate choice for this particular studio.
Sailor Uranus - An Analysis of her Design and Characterization in Relation to identifying as a Lesbian
[For this analysis I will be primarily looking at the 1994 design.]
Sailor Uranus/ Haruka Tenoh is a character from Sailor Moon, introduced in episode 3 of Sailor Moon Super - ‘A Beautiful Boy? The Secret of Haruka Tenoh’. Her character was introduced to work alongside Sailor Neptune and Pluto in the quest to find the talismans in the third Story Arc. She is designed to be a counterpart to Sailor Neptune and the two are rarely seen apart, this relationship is introduced early on and although the romantic/sexual connotations of this are not exposed until later in the series it becomes clear even in this introductory episode that they are a ‘package-deal’.
For a show of this magnitude and popularity to feature this relationship is quite a huge step forward for the representation of LGBT characters in animation. However I don’t believe that Haruka is the perfect example of how to design a lesbian character. For the first part the author of the manga, Naoko Takeuchi, has said that when she draws Haruka in her civilian form shes drews her more masculinely. Filling the masculine role in a relationship is often a stereotype that more butch presenting lesbians have to face and for animated representation to re enforce this is difficult. The opposite of course could be applied to Sailor Neptune, Uranus’ Partner. She is much more traditionally feminine and so many of the characters assume she is “his” girlfriend, because she appears more straight presenting. This is perhaps panting hetosexual identities onto a homosexual relationship.
On the other hand we can say that Haruka’s design is good because it is presenting a stereotype. In dressing androgynously and having shorter hair it is perhaps easier for the audience to read her as a lesbian than if they had tried to be more subtle with her design. By making her universally attractive to other characters in the series not dependant on gender this makes her appealing contrasted with some other lesbian characters of the time such as Alielle Relryle from El-Hazard (1995) who is presented as a comic relief character who makes all the other female characters around her uncomfortable because of her openness about her sexuality.

Sailor Uranus - Comparison of Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon Crystal
In Sailor Moon S (1994) Haruka (Sailor Uranus) is introduced in episode 3, titled ‘A Pretty Boy? Haruka Tenoh’s Secret’. She is introduced as a boy, using the ‘boku’ form of ‘I’ to refer to herself which is primarily masculine. In both the Original Manga and anime when Haruka is in her ‘civilian form’ she is drawn much more masculinely and throughout this episode is perceived as a man, having both Sailor Moon and Sailor Venus fawn over her thinking she is a handsome boy until the end of the episode where she is revealed to be a girl and the others being attracted to a woman becomes the joke. This is perhaps not the best way to introduce her as a lesbian, but as her relationship with Sailor Neptune is not really touched on in this episode whether or not the plan was always to have them romantically involved is speculation. Overall, if you did not know the character prior to watching this episode I feel that you would probably not think that she is in fact a girl, despite perhaps her voice which is somewhat androgynous like the rest of her design.
In comparison to the androgyny of her 90s design, I find that the art style change for Sailor Moon Crystal (2016) does make Haruka appear more traditionally female even though she is still presented to the viewer as male. However comparing her with Mamoru from the same episode:
Who does identify as male, we can see where the confusion of the characters and viewers may come from. This new art style, common in a lot of newer anime goes for this kind of bishounen look, which can make it harder to tell short haired women from the pretty boys. I think you can see that there has been effort with the shape of Haruka’s jawline and width of her shoulders to distinguish her from other male characters in the series.
Research Report Interim Submission
Initial Research For Research Report Proposal
I started typing up my initial research for the research roept proposal. I have tried to put it onto a table, although the formatting on word was a little weird. I have been trying to look at animated lesbians, mostly focusing on their design. I want to look at the design of wlw characters and why it is that I found that many of them have a lot of masculine features in their design.
Using our selected colour palette I have made some style frames showing what I want my part of the animation to look like, I found it more difficult than i was expecting to work with such a limited colour palette but I think it has given me a deeper appreciation for this kind of more simple style animation.
Working form the feedback from last week’s team meeting I have developed the story board for my piece of the animation. By using the grey scale I have been able to show the different contrast of each element and look at the composition. This is quite a simple brief so it just helps to be able to look at the frames together
We had our second weekly team meeting where we discussed each others storyboards and decided on the colour palette we are going to use for our animation. It is still unclear as to whether or no we will actually be able to make it, but for now we are going to keep moving with the weekly meetings and making the pre-production materials
This is my developed version of the storyboard using the Audio we collected from Valentina’s interview. i wanted to encorporaste the plants from my previous ideas as I thought it would work well to show the different scale she talks about with making something small but feeling like the ‘creator of the universe’
These were my initial ideas of colour palettes to present to the group, i liked the idea of the blue being the main colour as I felt this would fit with the spacey theme my ideas were based on.
Today we had our first team meeting over a video call. Becasue of the escalating virus situation we are no longer able to meet up in person and so hosting out weekly meetings like this is the best thing to ensure we can keep moving forward with the project.
Today I listened to the audio we recorded last week and picked out some of my favourite parts from each one. I think overall I like Valentino’s audio best and I am going to develop my ideas based on what she said.
