Yes, this little weeb is back and addicted to another sports anime. (p.s. I told myself not to fall for this one, that I am a strong independent woman. Cat, you failed me;-;)
Buuuuuut the more I’m into this anime, the better! Since now I can analysis graphics and content for you little weebs as your entertainment. Your welcome.
So if you have not watched episode 5 or Yuri!!! On Ice (dafaq you’re doing with your life, jks) but this might contain “spoilers” for you so just a slight warning.
1. Viktor Used his Body to Express to Yuuri
This is such a beautiful scene in my opinion. Despite the whole “Viktuuri scandal”, I personally feel a deep support from Viktor.
First, we need to talk about Viktor’s [slight] character development
From episode one, I thought Viktor is a character that is just seductive and dramatic as Tamaki Suoh (a/n: oh my childhood days..). After watching episode 5, the character develop of Viktor is interesting. It might be predictable for some audience members but I love how he was portrayed as this “God” to Yuuri and now drastically changed to become a supporter for Yuuri. Characterization is important in every show/movie and the playwrights did a fantastic job developing his character and I’m excited to see more of that in the future.
(a/n: is it just me or this is just Ouran all over again but in sports and yaoi?)
Anywayssss….Back to my first highlight!
Viktor knew that Yuuri (Katsuki) is not as confident because with all the failure he had gone through and I don’t blame Yuuri. (a/n:I remember falling off horses multiple times when trying to canter and my self esteem was really low because I never got it right.) The fact that Viktor knew what buttons to push to comfort and give that confidence to Yuuri is beautiful yet questionable sometimes. Why using his body? Does Yuuri have a trigger when someone, his idol, his coach, hugged him from behind? Hmm
We can definitely see the shock in Yuuri’s eyes. Some might argue that Viktor did this as a publicity stunt but in my own opinion, Viktor is more than cameras and fame, he really cared for Yuuri’s feelings and emotions.
2. Minami Looking Up to Yuuri
First of all: I.LOVE.THIS.CHICKEN.NUGGET.HE.SO.CUTE. Now that my fangirling is slightly over, let’s move on to why I think this is one of the highlight. The reason being is that Yuuri is the one who looked up to someone, aka Viktor in the past. The fact that the story goes on to someone, aka Minami, admiring and looking up to Yuuri shows that everyone is just standing in a straight line. There’s no one that is better or worse than the other one. Sure, in sports there are rankings, but my point is that how ironic and beautiful that is to have Viktor, Yuuri and Minami together while they all either get admiring or admiring the other person.
As Yuuri didn’t want to acknowledge the fact Minami was admiring him, Viktor took the matter in his own hands. And what Viktor said it’s true, one person need that positivity, such as Minami, to do the best they can, rather slouching and being all negative all the time when facing challenges ahead. (a/n: Hmm, Viktor does know how to push Yuuri’s buttons,eh?)
This also is a big change for Yuuri since he never felt being admired and now he has an admirer on the rink with him, it makes it interesting and fun to watch how Yuuri copes with this challenge of having the confidence of cheering on one another.
Moral of the hightlight:I believe in this society, there’s no such thing as “levels” or “labeling” on who’s “better” or “worse”, such as the school ranking or sports ranking. Everyone admires one another and the cycle goes on.
Let’s just slap ourselves to the 3rd highlight.
3. Viktor realizing Yuuri’s rebellious side is taken after him
The last highlight is when Viktor realized Yuuri’s rebellious action on the rink was taken after him. This is such a plot twist for me (a/n: oh jolly English student) as this might mean Yuuri took “confidence” as “rebellious” and it’s interesting to see how Yuuri interoperates characterization much different as Viktor.
Viktor is clearly a much confidence guy and Yuuri is taking “rebellious” after him as Viktor snatched his phone to talk to Yuuri’s previous coach. Hmm, hyperbole maybe?
The timing of the animation is also beautiful as the moment when Yuuri pointed to Viktor, Viktor realized the message. As cheesy as it sounds, it happened in reality sometimes. The closest word I could think of relating to this is synaesthesia, which means “the production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body.” I might be wrong but using a “body part” to produce a sense impression is pretty accurate, and it does apply to the fact when Viktor hugged Yuuri behind him. (a/n: all those English classes are worth it)
These are the 3 top highlights that stuck with me in episode 5. I might consider doing these anyalsis more in the future if time allows but thank you for reading and enjoy the upcoming gifs.

Figure Skaters Mentioning Yuri!!! on Ice Masterpost
Evgeni Plushenko, one of the most renowned figure skaters, is probably who Victor is based off of. He is a 4x Olympic medalist, 3x World champion, 7x European champion, 4x Grand Prix Final champion, and 10x Russian national champion. His official Facebook page consistently posts about YOI, but it is confirmed that his media twitter is linked to the page. He has an official personal twitter and a media twitter account run by his staff.
Kenji Miyamoto, an ice dancer and figure skating coach who is the choreographer for YOI, posts about YOI on his blog. He has also choreographed for both Evgeni Plushenko and Yuzuru Hanyu in the past. Here’s a photo of him with Plushenko.
Evgenia Medvedeva, a 16-year-old Russian figure skater who is the 2016 World champion, 2016 European champion, 2015 Grand Prix Final champion, and 2016 Russian national champion, posts about YOI and other anime often on her twitter account. You may have seen her Sailor Moon program before!
Masato Kimura, a Japanese figure skater who has competed in national championships such as the 2015 Japan Figure Skating Championships, posts about YOI on his twitter and even posted a video of himself skating to History Maker.
Nobunari Oda, is a retired Japanese figure skater who is a former Olympian, 2006 Four Continents champion, 4x Grand Prix Final medalist, and 2008 Japanese national champion. He is also a TV personality and often gives figure skating commentary. He tweeted the following, which roughly translates to: “Yuri!!! On Ice is really amusing.”
Tarah Kayne and Danny O’Shea, are partners and American pair skaters who are the 2014 Four Continents silver medalists and 2016 U.S. national champions. They exchanged the following tweets:

Rin is pissed. No scratch that. Rin is furious. Haru a few days ago dared him to not to be jealous of his closeness with other people since Haru is the most well-known and popular swimmer in the world after his golden win in the Olympics.
Ever since then, Haru has been getting a lot of attention from the female audience - such as interviews, photoshoots, movie/commercial offers, etc.
Yes, even though Rin is also a famous swimmer but Haru seems to get more attention from the females. This makes Rin furious. Very furious.
“I dare you not to be jealous of anyone that is close to me today.” Haru said in an indifferent tone.
“Dare accepted.”

Rin’s POV
“I never agreed to this!” I screamed at the TV when the new commercial of the fragrance from Hugo Boss. Haru and this female model are in it. They do what normal fragrance commercials do. Touching each other, lips almost kissing, staring deep into each other’s eyes. This is so not the Haruka Nanase I know.
You can do it Rin, I won’t be jealous.
I turned off the TV as Haru walked out of the bathroom with a towel over his wet hair. I breathed slowly, trying not to show my jealousy in front of him, or else I lost the dare.
I looked at Haru and smiled as he handed me his first ever Vouge magazine shot. I flipped over the magazine as images of him getting intimate with other female models showed up. I bit my lip hard, trying so damn hard not to show any jealousy but the more I saw, the more I got jealous. Haru is mine. And I am the reason he swims, not these ew models.
I could feel Haru smirking beside me. I closed the magazine shut and placed it on the coffee table.
Okay Rin, you tackled through two things. You can do this Rin. Nothing can make you even more jealous.

Haru invited Makoto, Nagisa and Rei over to hang out. Apparently, they are all closey closey touchy touchy people, hovering over MY Haru. I sat at the corner of the couch watching Makoto laying his head on Haru’s lap, Nagisa’s arm tangled around Haru’s and Rei is just laying beside Haru, with his head against Haru’s side.
I am not jealous. Not jealous. NOT JEALOUS.
Haru looked up at me for a moment while I look at my phone, with a serious face. Okay, tried to have a serious face.
Haru smirked then he bent down closer and closer to Makoto’s face.
No Haru, bad boy no.
He bent down closer to Makoto and kissed his cheek.
That’s it!
I flipped and pulled Haru close to my chest, making all of the others jump.
“I’m down with your dare Haru! No one can touch you except me. Okay?!”
Then I heard laughter from Nagisa and Makoto, and a sighing Rei.
“Pay up Rei! You lost the bet!”
I was confused. They bet on this?!
When I was about to turn my head to ask Haru, he quickly cut me off by saying,
“You lost the dare. I’m topping tonight.” As he kissed my cheek and walked off to our room.
“W-Wait, w-what, H-Haru you never say anything about this!”
I ran after him.
Let’s just say my bum hurts and I would never want to do this ever agian. Ever.

Okay - I have to admit that #SouMako is not a popular ship and I might offend some MakoHaru shippers, and I know this will never happen in the anime series but hey! I love to dream. These are the reasons on why I ship #SouMako.
1. Their opposite personalities
In my little fantasy world - I just have this strong feeling that Sousuke and Makoto, which have opposite personality will attract to one another.
Sousuke - being bold and strong will go weak for the cheerful and smiling Makoto.
2. The way Sousuke told Makoto to call him “Sousuke” only
Even though Sousuke and Makoto did briefly meet in the past (aka Free! Starting Days reference) but in Japan, it’s partly manners to address someone with a certain pronoun, unless the person you are addressing to is a close friend and doesn’t mind addressing them only with their name (such as Haru and Makoto or Haru and Rin)
Well, it’s quite surprising that Sousuke actually took the plunge and told Makoto not to add “-kun” to his name
I just love this moment when Makoto was quite shock when Sousuke told him to do so.
3. Sousuke will protect Makoto
For some gut-feeling reason, I feel like Sousuke will be the type of guy that will protect Makoto. Makoto is such a cheerful little puppy but when in trouble, Sousuke will jump out and protect him at all cost.
4. Makoto will take care of Sousuke
What if Makoto walked pass Sousuke being in this situation? My guess is that Makoto would run to help him or take him to the doctor. I just feel that they both just balance each other out. Sousuke will protect Makoto and Makoto will care and watch out for Sousuke since this whale shark can be stubborn.
5. They just look cute together
Okay, this might be a “terrible” reason but I have to admit that they do look cute together (if you can see in my point of view). I believe that Sousuke will be the person who opens up to Makoto and Makoto will let Sousuke spoon/cuddle him from behind.

1. Haru had flashbacks on what Rin said to him in the past
“If you swim with me, I’ll show you a sight you’ve never seen before!“ (Episode 1)
Even though Nagisa and Makoto did acknowledge Rin in episode 1, Haru had the deepest connection with Rin/Rin’s words. This shows that Haru still remembers Rin’s words by heart from middle school till high school
(aka waiting for his Rin to come back?)
2. Haru immediately recognizes Rin when he appears in the abandoned building
….And to top that, Nagisa and Makoto didn’t know it was Rin until Rin did his signature “cap pulling” gesture.
And of course, Haru was shocked to see him.
This shows that Haru still feels connected to him after all this time not seeing him. I mean come on, it ur boyfriend
(aka maybe he was happy that his wish came true?? “OMFG MY BABY RIN IS BACK! HELL YA!! I CAN’T DO THIS SHOW WITHOUT YOU!!” something like that
3. Haru immediately sprint to help Rin when he saw him suffering
Okay - this is pretty much the “awwest” scene ever (in my opinion)
Basically, Haru was the first person to run when Rin was the last person to make it to the finish line in the individual race.
It shows that Haru still cares about Rin, even though there are in bad terms with the whole “I’M GONNA BEAT YOU” situation.

4. Rin didn’t expect Haru to go chase for him after his loss
I think this scene is like showing that Rin was angry at Haru and about to bash him but I feel like deep down, somewhere in his little loving heart, Rin actually wanted Haru to show up for him.
And of course, Haru did show up. In the GIF, Rin was shocked for 1 second and quickly realized he was letting his emotions slip out so he became angry but I love this moment where I feel Rin wanted Haru to show up which means he wanted Haru to care/love him, even with all the bad things Rin did to him previously.

5. Rin finally showed his emotions (cried) in front of Haru
Okay. I can explain this. It doesn’t mean if you cry in front of your friend, you are in love with them. BUT in Rin and Haru’s case, Rin obviously wanted to be the strong and indifferent one from the beginning but he didn’t do a good job on that.
Crying in front of Haru and telling him that he wanted to swim with him (aka Telling Haru that he was the reason he took up competitive swimming after they raced). It was an emotional scene. I’m not saying it’s all lovey dovey but you can clearly see how they are opening up to one another after all these years and how their relationship shifted.
(ALL MOI FEELS OMFG)
6. Haru realized that Rin was the reason he swims
Probably the best moment for all shippers because omfg, we all died. Admit it.
Haru basically admitted to Rin that Rin was the one who motivates him to swim and he wanted to swim with him. No further explanation needed.

7. Haru was the first person to be beside Rin when nobody was there for him
Haru was basically the first person to stand by Rin in the whole season. Even though he didn’t show Rin this gesture until the very end but with Haru watching Rin practice, talking to Rin, racing Rin, Rin winning. Haru didn’t care too much except Rin’s feelings/emotions.
Haru is a quiet character but his heart speaks louder than his words. He CARES about Rin from the very start.
SPOILERS ON FREE!STARTING DAYS (cos I’m badass and I watched it)
Haru was the first person to ask about Rin when he was in Australia but Makoto just brush it off saying that “He’s fine in Australia”.
Until Sousuke gave Haru the letter Rin wrote (which was intended to Haru but Rin was too embarrassed to give it to Haru so he gave it to Sousuke. I wonder why.)
As how cheesy anime goes - Haru repeated the same words to Rin (and of coruse animators are as romantic af) repeated the same cherry blossom (Sakura) scene from Episode 1 (Free!). Haru decided to show Rin the “sight you’ve never seen before” Romantic, isn’t it.

8. Rin got his heart set on being on a relay team with Haru when he first met him
It was a pretty big commitment/step on feeling connected to someone when you first met them (reference: Free! Eternal Summer). When Rin first met Haru, Haru made Rin shook to the bottom of his Earth. (too cheesy). BUT this is why Rin changed to Iwatobi School
9. Rin dropped everything (aka practice for nationals) to save Haru/Rin’s admiration towards Haru
Also, one of the best scenes because we can see how Rin REALLY REALLY REALLY cares about Haru and he basically took Haru (aka took care of Haru) to Australia to see the world and allow Haru to find his dream. Rin is such a good boyfriend.
Rin’s homestay parents also revealed how Rin used to talk about Haru and how he greatly “admires” him (wink wink nudge nudge)

Of course, Haru found his dream, thanks to the help of Rin
