TOSCANINI GESTURAL INTERFACE

The Toscanini Gestural Interface is a project to create a gestural control system aimed at visual artists, dancers and musicians that is easy to use, has a low cost, but leaves plenty of room for new hacks and new applications. We are currently developing Toscanini on the eZ430-Chronos Development Tool, that retails at about $50, and MAX/MSP. At the end of this stage of development we will have a bullet-proof Apple application for using the Chronos as a gestural MIDI controller. Toscanini Interfacing is now Conductive IO!

Dear Friends:

We've come a long way since Music Hack Day Boston! Over the past few months, we've been working hard on the Toscanini project, rebuilding and optimizing several major components and processes. We've also been working on a few other ideas that, for now, are still in their alpha stages.

Because we believe so strongly in the applications of Toscanini and other similar projects, we've decided to move things a little farther forward.

Toscanini Interfacing is re-branding as Conductive IO -- a company dedicated to pursuing the possibilities that exist between music and motion.

The Toscanini project will be unveiled in its newest form at two upcoming events:

1. BarCamp Boston

The un-conference!  We will be presenting a demo of the latest version of Toscanini.

2. Together Boston (Wednesday, April 20th)

Conductive IO founder Robby Grodin will be on a panel entitled "The Body Electric," moderated by Longy School of Music's Jeremy Van Buskirk. The discussion will focus on the implementation of motion-sensitive technology in music production and performance.

So, I just pushed a new version to the GitHubs for your use. Hopefully it is 0.0.1 times better than the last version. This version allows you to select the button broadcast on/off in the app, rather than just by pressing the watch buttons. The link in the header is to the built application. Tested on Mac Os X 10.6. Let us know how it works!

In this version you will want to (in this order)

1. Plug in the RF dongle

2. Press the Lower Left Button (#) until the bottom line says "ACC".

3. Press the Lower Right Button (DOWN ARROW) to start broadcasting.

4. Open up the App/Max Patch

The software should then load up. 

You can then adjust which channel/bus you want to broadcast each axis on in the application, click the check box to start broadcasting.

First of all: we attempted to fix the midi problem in the app by giving you all a drop down menu on the upper right hand of the window to choose your midi out port. This should work. Should being the operative word. 

Second of all: to our alpha users, you are AWESOME. There is no way we could have spotted this problem without your feedback. We are going through the rough waters of getting this technology to work, and your communication is what makes it possible. This is still experimental tech, and we need all the help we can get to make it... not so experimental.

There are exciting things coming for Toscanini in the near future, and I can't wait to share them with you.
