The Going Merry’s deck was quiet for once, just the soft creak of wood and the distant splash of sea creatures minding their own business. Ace leaned against the railing, arms folded, watching Zoro wipe down his swords after training. Luffy was finally asleep below deck (miracle of miracles), stuffed full of meat and snoring like a grumbling bear akin to the ones they used to hunt and later skin for sustenance in the wilderness.
“...Pardon me, swordsman.”
Ace pushed off the rail and stopped in front of him, dropped his arms, and (without any warning) bowed ninety degrees. Here goes nothing. Ahem.
“Thank you for looking after Luffy.”
Ace straightened, then bowed again, deeper this time with his hands by his sides.
“Thank you for dragging him out of the ocean the many times his pea-brain decided he could swim. He’s heavier than he looks, as I recall.”
Third bow. Ace’s forehead comically nearly kissed the deck.
“Thank you for not letting him starve when the cook ran outta meat ’cause his hopeless captain inhaled it all (even though ya just threw him onigiri like he was a stray cat).”
Fourth bow, somehow even lower, cowboy hat tipping forward.
“Thank you for cuttin’ down anyone who tried to hurt him. As impulsive as Luff’ can get, I owe ya for every single one of those bastards.”
Fifth bow. Ace practically folded himself in half, husky voice cracking with laughter he couldn’t hold back anymore.
“And thank you for putting up with his rubber-brained nonsense every single second of every single day. Trust me, I know it’s a full-time job.”
He stayed bowed for a second, shoulders shaking before he popped back upright, grin wide and sunny as he saluted the green-haired first mate, lazy tendrils of fire surfacing at his fingertips before he abruptly extinguished them with a sheepish chuckle.
