It’s a puzzle. It is meant to stimulate the mind. But, perhaps I should let you attempt an easier, more durable puzzle. This one is not for simpler minds.

He used to have a lot more chitin. It was practically all he was--a mass of black, craggy material. It protected him from acid rain and from the nips and bites of other newsparks.
He didn’t mind the chitin, then. It wouldn’t have occurred to him to mind it. It was just what he was.
Under that rocky covering, a smoother, sleeker body was forming, developing. (He doesn’t know what a butterfly is--but, like a butterfly.) And then he started to molt . . . losing mass until the edge of a wing was visible here, a thruster breaking through the chitin there.
The point is: he knows, now, that he was a stupid fresh-forged baby before. And he knows, now, that chitin is a stupid baby covering.
And it’s very, very, very frustrating and embarrassing that he still has speckles of it on his face and seams of it on his arms and legs.
The teachers say: Leave it alone. It will fall off in time.
They say: Stop picking at it. It’s not ready. You’ll bleed.
But they’re not here right now, and it never bleeds much. So he nibbles at the rough black material clinging to his wrist and feels a sense of triumph whenever a bit breaks off.
