Angelique wasn’t one to spill her guts about what had happened to her parents to just anyone–it was a horribly embarrassing time in her life. She’d grown to trust Lizzie, though, and it felt almost relieving to have the weight of her past lifted and out in the open. “Well, thank you. I hope your parents haven’t been unexpectedly arrested while you were a teenager?” she asked with a laugh. “I’ve been trying to find out more about what happened, but I feel like that requires some shady dealings that I’m not sure I want to take on.”

Lizzie was honored that Angelique felt close enough to her to admit these truths about her past. Angelique trusting her proved to her even more just how good of a job she was doing, and now she felt like she was on top of the world. She couldn’t wait to tell Gordo the good news. “Oh no, my parents are as normal as can be. A little weird, but nothing out of the ordinary,” she answered with a small giggle.

Her eyes widened as Angelique admitted to not knowing the whole story. “You don’t even know what happened? That sounds awful,” she admitted, feeling more bad for her boss. “Well… If you ever need some help looking into it, I think that could be part of my job description, right? An assistant is supposed to assist, so … Let me know how I can help!”

Jaq found himself smiling as he recognized the girl beside him. Lizzie McGuire was one of the only girls he’d ever truly liked that he’d hooked up with. He was typically the one to want more between the two, and as much as he was a flirt, Jaq always respected her wishes to keep their interactions to making out at the bar and nothing more. Ever since she’d made this much clear, Jaq had begun to see her as more of a friend, but there was still this longing for more that he couldn’t quite get rid of. “Why, that boss of yours planning another party?” Jaq had been working the New Year’s event for some extra cash, as had Lizzie. “Hanging in there. Just trying to stay out of trouble, I guess,” he said with a laugh. “I started online school, but there’s just not much time for it with work.”

Lizzie mentally noted that she had to find the right time to let Jaq know, Hey I have a boyfriend now, knowing he always tried to make moves on her in the past that she’d usually go along with, depending on how she was feeling. It felt right, though, to finally be with Gordo and to quit messing around with guys who weren’t ready for a real relationship. “Not exactly, but she is starting to give me more responsibilities and stuff,” Lizzie replied with a smile, proud of her achievements when she’d had zero confidence when she first took on the job as Angelique’s assistant. More responsibility and a raise, though, was the first sign that proved she was doing pretty well. “Oh, good for you! I know it’s hard to find that work-life balance, but I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it.”

With Lizzie running her fingers through his hair, his gaze flickered to her lips. He was almost too distracted for the next moment to listen to what she was saying, but when he heard her admit to her own jealousy, he couldn’t help a small, smug smile from springing up—and he wisely elected not to let her know that he was pretty sure from their one conversation that Sharpay already had a boyfriend anyway. Details, details.

He wouldn’t have had much time to say anything back even if he’d wanted to, because soon enough she was kissing him again, and he was returning it with fervor. His hands were on her hips, slowly pushing up under the hem of her shirt until he reached the bare skin of her waist, pulling her closer. It was crazy to think that he had come over tonight just to eat take-out with his best friend, but now they were sitting here making out as a couple, their half-eaten dinner long-forgotten, and hungry for something else entirely.

Gordo’s silence was speaking volumes — he always had something to say, always a silly or sarcastic comment up his sleeve, though his smirk as Lizzie vaguely mentioned her jealousy didn’t go unnoticed. But Gordo didn’t have to say anything at this point. He’d already said everything he needed to, and now they were beginning to communicate in other ways, both of them obviously wanting more than what words could say.

It was as if they were making up for lost time, considering they’d never shared kisses like this when they’d previously dated. She wanted to make a joke about his professional make out game, to tease him again, but she didn’t want to make the moment end. As soon as his fingertips touched her skin, a small chill went up her spine, and she didn’t hesitate to pull herself closer to him. Both her hands were now wrapped around his neck, fingers still loosely holding some of his curly locks, and she was practically sitting on his lap as her lips didn’t pull away from his.

He accepted the pillow abuse with a laugh, knowing he deserved as much and expecting about that level of retaliation for his inappropriate teasing. He had no regrets about it. The look on her face was priceless. When she relaxed with the pillow on her lap, he leaned into her until she picked her head back up to look at him again. Gordo could see in her eyes when he told her how he felt that she believed him—for the most part. There was the tiniest glimmer of doubt, and he thought he knew where it was coming from.

“Well, yeah. Obviously you know my type,” he replied as she picked up on his type comment. There was still a tone of humor in his voice to ensure that she knew he wasn’t trying to be too serious even as he brought up his own insecurities. “Based on the guys you’ve liked in the past, I’m pretty sure you’re into tall guys with good hair. Not that I was ever jealous or anything…”

It didn’t truly matter at this point. Lizzie had said yes; she wanted to be with him, not anyone else. And he wondered to himself if this was what winning at life actually felt like. He didn’t need to consider her last question, chuckling immediately as she brought it up. “No. You’ve never had to compete with anyone. Not when it comes to me.”

Lizzie couldn’t help but appreciate this moment, the way the two went from fits of giggles and laughter to a softer, sincere moment, with no weirdness in between. She truly could sit close to Gordo like this all night and be at peace. They never stayed serious for long, though, as they continued to prove so. She made a face as he talked about her type, her full attention on him now. “Who said you have bad hair?” She asked, bringing a hand up to run her fingers through his hair with a smile. “Yeah, well,” she shrugged, “it never really worked out for me with any of those guys, did it?” As she said this, she thought about all the dates she’d gone on, the many different flings she’d had, that only ended with her unsure of what went wrong. All along, she thought that something was wrong with her, but she obviously was just looking for the wrong guys in the first place.

“It’s okay, maybe I was a little jealous when you kept asking about Sharpay..” She trailed off, giving him a sheepish smile. His confirmation that she didn’t have to compete with anyone, though, was all the reassurance she needed. Her fingers still tangled in his hair, she brought her lips to his again.

Lizzie always loved to gossip with Gabi about boys, and today she had a little bit extra to talk about. Her and Gordo agreeing to try once again to date was a big step, but Lizzie didn’t have any regrets so far. In fact, she couldn’t wait to share the news with all of her close friends. “Gabi! Hey!” She said excitedly, giving her friend a hug as she let her into the apartment. “Come in, we’ve got so much to talk about.” She was practically bouncing on her heels in anticipation as she lead her to the couch. “How’s work been? Keeping you busy?” @gabimontez

It was relieving to hear that Lizzie thought that Angelique was a kind boss. She remembered when she was her age, how terrible some of the people above her were, but it wasn’t always because they just felt like it–they’d pick on her about her parents, thinking maybe she’d had something to do with why they went to jail. “That means a lot that you think that. Seriously. People can be really horrible and let power go to their heads. Like, did I ever tell you about my parents and how they’re in prison? I couldn’t find a job for a while after that, and when I did, the people were awful about it. It’s why I had to start my own company.”

It was true that if Angelique wasn’t a good boss, Lizzie would probably still give her praise to be a good employee. She had no reason to lie to the older woman, though, for she really did treat her great and had taught her so much. Lizzie’s eyes widened slightly as Angelique mentioned her parents. She had no idea about Angelique’s back story, but hearing it made her understand her bosses hard work ethic now. “That sounds so awful! I’m sorry you had to go through that,” Lizzie sympathized. “I’m glad you got to this point, though. Like, you’re seriously doing an amazing job.”

Max’s jaw dropped a bit at Lizzie’s harsh comment against her friend, and he found himself laughing. “Sheesh, you’re not holding anything back, are you?” Max asked, his lips curling into a smirk. Just as he wasn’t over Alli when the two had dated, he had always held onto the suspicion that Lizzie and Gordo were meant to be, just as he and Allison were. Not that either of them had ever shown it, but it was just a feeling, maybe like the one Dani had felt a decade ago. “Well, I’m glad you made a friend, then,” he said, placing a slice for her on the counter. “What was wrong with the guy? Not the kind of stunning conversationalist that got you to fall for me?” Max teased.

“What? Honesty is the best policy, right?” Lizzie replied with another giggle. “Don’t tell Gordo I said that, though, he’ll probably kill me,” she teased. She took the slice of pizza and thanked him, rolling her eyes as he teased her again. “Totally boring. Like, we had nothing in common. I know they say opposites attract or whatever, but that was not the vibe I was getting.” She smiled and shook her head. “Speaking of falling for you, how have you and Allison been?”

After the tea spillage at work this week, Jaq found himself taking the edge off in the only way he knew how: at the bar. There weren’t any parties going on that weekend, and he’d gotten over the shame of going to the bar alone. It typically resulted in better luck going home with a girl, anyway. “Are you here alone, too?” he asked the person sitting beside him, offering a smile. “I am, don’t judge. It’s been a long week. Have you ever spilled an entire teapot on yourself and then your boss found out that you broke her ceramic teapot? No? Me neither, until yesterday. Don’t recommend.”

Despite how much things had changed in her life just in the past few days, with her and Gordo deciding to take things to the next level, Lizzie still found moments where she’d want to stop for a drink after a long day working. She noticed Jaq right away when she’d gotten there, taking a seat beside him and giving him a smile. “I am. It’s been a long week for me too,” she admitted, though it hadn’t necessarily been a long week in a bad way. “I haven’t,” she giggled, “but it honestly sounds like something I’d do, knowing how clumsy I am.” As a bartender walked over, she ordered herself a mixed drink before bringing her attention back to the other. “How’ve you been otherwise? I haven’t seen you in awhile.”

The dusting of blush on Lizzie’s cheeks when she responded to his comment about making-out didn’t escape his notice, and he couldn’t resist the urge to encourage it further by quipping, “Just wait til you see me naked.” He was joking, of course; it was just crazy to think that he could actually have an effect on her like that…He was definitely taking advantage of it, but just for the moment, because soon enough the silly banter they were having quieted into a serious scene. Resting her head on him and holding him close while still taking care around the sore spot on his neck, she responded to his confession in kind—not only saying that she loved him but that she didn’t know what she’d do without him.

“Well, you’ll never have to worry about that,” he assured her. It was a fact of their relationship from the time they were young, that would never change: “I’m not going anywhere.” He rested his head atop hers, memories of the times she’d fallen asleep with her head on his shoulder just like this flashing through his mind, and he took a deep breath before finally going for the last confirmation they needed to make this official. He wanted nothing more than to be with her and by this point he was ninety-nine percent certain that she wanted the same thing, but he had to leave a tiny space for doubt until she said it herself.

“So…does that mean you’d wanna go out with me? For real this time.” He would never forget the summer fling they’d had between high school and college, when they had acknowledged having feelings for one another but were too young and worried about preserving their friendship to go all the way in. This time, he was all in. “I know I’m not exactly your type,” he teased. “But I’m your best friend. You know I’ll take care of you.”

Lizzie should have known that Gordo would begin to tease her, but what he had said next only made her eyes widen even more. “Gordo!” She practically yelled, grin still present as she grabbed one of the pillows from the couch to hit him with. Not too hard, but hard enough to show him she meant serious business. Gordo always loved to mess with her, but this was definitely on another level than usual. She didn’t hate it, but still had to get back at him in return somehow.

After she playfully whacked him with the pillow, she let it rest in her lap, waiting for what was to come next. She practically melted at his words, the way he was so gentle and kind as he said them. “I know,” she answered, never thinking for a second that Gordo would leave her side. Through thick and thin, through even the awkward stages of trying to date each other in the past, Gordo was still there for her. He always was, and she didn’t doubt that he always would be.

“For real this time?” She repeated, lifting up her head to meet his gaze. She believed that to be true, even if she had a small hint of hesitation deep down. It was nothing against Gordo, of course, but more her own insecurities making her hesitate. She giggled, rolling her eyes. “Oh, now we’re talking about my type?” She asked, smile never faltering. “But ... yes. I do. If that’s what you want, of course,” she said, adding teasingly, “I don’t have to compete against this vampire for you, do I?”

He played along with her teasing as she questioned the possibility that he could be hiding some sort of magic from her, despite the fact that she had known him their whole lives. “Actually…” he deadpanned, before breaking into a grin and returning her gentle shove. “No. Of course not.” There was only one thing he had been able to keep from her—besides the plot of his screenplay—and now that was out in the open. So…now what?

They seemed to be on the same page, Lizzie bringing up the topic of ‘us,’ and he liked the sound of that word when she used it to refer to them as a pair…as a couple…? If this was finally the moment for them to define their relationship and take it beyond the boundaries of friendship into something more, he was ready to seize that opportunity—it felt right. He hoped she felt the same way…But before that, he had a gripe with her choice of the next words she’d spoken to pick apart.

He scoffed, feigning offense. “Ca-casual? Did that feel casual to you? I’m sorry I didn’t bring my professional make-out game, McGuire.” With a laugh, he shook his head and returned his gaze to hers, immediately softening. “It wasn’t a casual make-out for me,” he confessed honestly. “It was…the physical release of years of pent up feelings. I love you, Lizzie. I always have.”

One eyebrow raised quizzically, she watched Gordo playfully pretend he had some sort of secret to admit to her. She knew he was obviously messing with her, rolling her eyes with a smile as he gently pushed her arm in return. Although she was nervous to ask about what was next for them, the way they were both so comfortable around each other during this conversation was reassuring enough in itself.

She didn’t think he’d take offense to the way she’d described their mini make-out session, eyes widening slightly and her smile only growing. “No! That’s literally not what I meant!” She was quick to defend herself, a laugh escaping her lips. “Professional? I .. I didn’t know there was a difference. Should I be nervous?” She asked, cheeks turning a light shade of pink and still giggling at how silly it all was. As their fits of laughter died down, though, the conversation went back to being a little more serious, and Gordo’s words made her heart flutter in her chest. Despite that they’d tried to date before, the moments leading up to that time felt a lot different than this. In fact, that honestly felt like a lifetime ago. Lizzie and Gordo had both learned a lot about themselves and each other since then, and the time between then and now might’ve been exactly what they needed to finally lead up to this.

Hearing it was years of pent up feelings was a little shocking, but should have been pretty obvious. In a way, it had been the same for her, but Gordo seemed to be more aware of his feelings than Lizzie had. Hearing him express his love, it was magical, even more magical than the literal vampire he’d been bitten by recently. Though they’d always told each other how much they all loved each other, Miranda included, this was a different confession of love — it was no longer only platonic, like it had always been. “Gordo..” Lizzie trailed off, leaning close to rest her head on his shoulder and wrap her arms around him in a side-hug. She was careful not to lean too close to the injury on his neck, but she did give his waist a squeeze to show how much his words meant to her. “You know I love you, too. I know we always say that, but .. This time I mean it even more. You’re so special to me, and I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

“Please, you’re just being humble. I wanted to go to that party so badly, but I had a … concert to go to. Hannah Montana. She had one on New Year’s Eve back in Los Angeles,” Miley said quickly, giving her friend a smile. It was usually a foolproof excuse so long as she didn’t use it on the same person too many times. “I mean, it was amazing. If you’re ever in the west coast mood, I’ll go back with you. How have things been back here? What did I miss?”

“Well, a Hannah Montana concert was probably way more exciting than the ball!” Lizzie replied excitedly, almost wishing she could have gone to the concert, too. “It was fun, though. I was helping my boss for a lot of it, but I also did the blind date thing to make things a little more interesting,” she smiled with a light shrug. “Please, that sounds amazing! I mean, not much has really changed,” she admitted with a small laugh. “I went on a few dates while you were gone, actually, but none of them were all that special.”

He was just about to crack and fess up, unable to keep anything from Lizzie when she asked him so directly, but then she seemed to hesitate and offer him an out so he didn’t have to tell her how his date had ended up with her mouth on his throat. Maybe because she already knew—it wasn’t exactly hard to guess—and maybe she didn’t actually want to hear it. In that case, he would gladly avoid the subject.

He had to put himself in her shoes and imagine how he’d feel if their positions were reversed—if he just found out that she’d had an intimate encounter with another guy not long ago. Even if it was before she knew how he felt about her, there would be an inevitable twinge of jealousy, just thinking about Lizzie with someone else. It had never been a walk in the park before, seeing her date other people. For starters, he’d want to show her that he had just as much to offer her as any other man, if not more…Rather than an explanation of how this whole vampire bite thing started, perhaps he should be offering her reassurance.

“It probably wasn’t as crazy as it sounds,” he answered. “Apparently there are a lot of magical people in town; they’re just good at hiding it.” Much like he had been hiding his feelings for so long. Gordo took Lizzie’s hand, wanting her to realize he was being serious as he continued, “You know…all those things I said earlier. I meant them.”

It was obvious Lizzie didn’t know whether she wanted to hear more details or not — on one hand, this was the first magic experience anyone she knew had come across, so it was natural to be curious! On the other hand ... It was a little weird to be talking about a date he had after what just happened between them. Gordo seemed to catch Lizzie’s hesitation, though, despite that she had asked. He never failed to reassure her, to make her feel okay no matter how many crazy thoughts were running through her head.

“Really?” Lizzie replied, eyes widening in curiosity as she mentally wondered if she’d ever met someone with magic before. “You’re not hiding something like that from me, are you?” She asked teasingly, smile returning as she lightly pushed his arm playfully. It was so easy to fall back into their playful banter, as if nothing weird or crazy had happened between them. It made her realize that all this time, she should have never worried about their friendship falling apart due to their romantic feelings toward each other. She wanted them to stay best friends, but now she realized they didn’t have to only be best friends. There was nothing wrong with making this something more, if that was something they both wanted.

She wasn’t exactly sure what Gordo wanted, but as he grabbed her hand and brought back up what he said earlier, relief washed over her. She really had nothing to fear anymore. “I know,” Lizzie answered with a smile, leaning over and kissing his cheek. “But ... What does this mean now?” She asked, still holding his hand as she met his gaze again. “For us, I mean. Like, I know you’re my best friend, but ... I’m pretty sure best friends don’t just casually make-out, you know?”

He carefully replaced the bandage after showing off the bite, quickly assuring her that he was going to be just fine. “Don’t worry. It looks worse than it is—once the swelling goes down, it’ll just turn into a cool scar.” Her concern was sweet and very Lizzie, but he really didn’t want her to worry on his behalf. Apart from literally having his blood drank due to the biggest miscommunication in history, Gordo had actually enjoyed Mavis’s company and didn’t want to make too big a deal out of the situation. It was an honest mistake in the end. A misunderstanding driven forward on his end by lust, which was another part he didn’t necessarily want to admit in front of the woman he had just managed to cross the line of friendship with after years of loving her quietly…

They had just been sitting right here, making out, and now Gordo was reflecting on his most recent date and how intimate things had gotten there. It was crazy. He was hardly the kind of person who hooked up in the first place, yet the one time he decided to let loose just happened to be days before he finally confessed to the love of his life. It made him feel pretty scummy. Of course, he hadn’t had any clue that he Lizzie would be here like this when he’d gone on that date and hooked up with Mavis, but he definitely didn’t want Lizzie to think that all of this now was just…simply physical. As amazing as the physical aspect was, they were something more.

Lizzie smiled as Gordo reassured her he was fine, finding it amusing that he was excited for the cool scar that would remain there eventually. It was still a little unsettling, though, imagining a vampire biting Gordo’s neck like that. Was it bad that she kinda wanted to know more? It was probably dumb to ask, but she couldn’t help but be curious.

“So .. How did it even happen?” She finally asked after a moment of silence. “I don’t need like, the gory details or anything, but,” she shrugged her shoulders. “There’s gotta be more to the story, right?”

Although, maybe she didn’t want to know the whole story. After all, if it had been a blind date, and they obviously ended up mouth to neck ... It must have gone a little bit similar to what was just happened with the two of them. She couldn’t be jealous, though, considering all the random dates she’s also been on .... Perhaps the gory details weren’t the only thing she didn’t want. “I-I mean, you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, but .. You literally met a vampire, like that’s just crazy to imagine!”

Of course he could tell her anything; but whether she would understand was another matter entirely. Gordo himself hadn’t known magic was real until the other day when he had come face to face with it. Or…fang to neck, more like. If the lingering evidence of his encounter with the supernatural was enough for Lizzie to believe his story, then that would be that…but if not, he couldn’t expose Mavis’ identity after he’d promised the woman that her secret was safe with him, even if it was to convince Lizzie. Maybe if she didn’t buy the truth, he could just get away with pretending it was a snake bite instead.

Her question was such an understatement, it made him flash an amused smile. “Oh, it went great,” he replied, nodding as in confirmation of the words he spoke. “She was real nice, very cute. There was just one hitch…” With that, he began to peel the edge of his bandage back, uncovering the bruise that surrounded two holes in his skin, spaced as far apart as human canines, but deeper than possible for a regular person to bite. “She was a vampire.” He waited somewhat apprehensively to observe Lizzie’s reaction.

Lizzie anxiously waited for Gordo to explain, thoughts no longer on how they were just kissing moments before. Making sure her best friend was okay always took top priority, no matter what. His smile was reassuring, though for a split second her eyebrows narrowed, almost unable to tell if he was kidding or not. Although, if he really did get injured during a blind date, she’d assume it was him being sarcastic as usual.

She was waiting for the punchline, for him to tell her he was totally messing around, but .... Watching as he peeled back the bandage, her eyes widened as soon as she saw the mark — no, two marks, only inches apart, surrounded by a painful looking bruise. “What?” Was all that seemed to come out of her at first, struggling to process the confession that his blind date was a vampire. She almost laughed at how crazy it sounded, but ... the mark seemed to match the story. She was completely dumbfounded, even getting a little closer to inspect the mark. She was careful not to touch it again, not wanting to hurt him.

“I .... I don’t know what to say,” she finally admitted, shaking her head in shock as she met his gaze again. Knowing Gordo would never lie to her, she trusted his story to be true. After all, she’d always heard random stories of the hidden magic in Walt Grove. She never thought she’d had proof of it right in her face, though, especially proof that was literally lingering on Gordo’s neck. “Are you ... Okay? Like, are you gonna .... ?” She wanted to say turn into a vampire, but it sounded so crazy that she couldn’t even finish that thought. “I don’t really know anything about vampires, but ... That looks pretty bad, Gordo.”
