Ethan lifted his head up and made eye contact with the person talking to him. He felt a bit more comfortable being around her when she mentioned that she was new too, but he was still hesitant. He wasn’t sure if he could trust her. People have broken his trust multiple times over the years which made him scared to open up to others. But this was supposed to be a safe place, right? Maybe he could use her as a friend. “Yeah…we should stick together. I’m a bit lost right now.”

“What’re you confused about?” She asked firstly. She was confused about a million things as well, she was nervous. But the boy looked so scared. She was here by choice, but didn’t know the other patients situation . “I’m Ansley by the way, if I didn’t already say that.”

Ethan stood in the somewhat empty hallway of the institute anxiously, unsure of what to do with himself. His adoptive parents had dropped him off a few hours earlier and now he was alone, scared, and somewhat lost. The institute was huge, and it didn’t help that the person helping him settle in barely gave him a tour of the place. It made him very anxious. He frowned as he took a few deep breaths to calm himself down, closing his eyes at the same time. He hoped that the pills he took earlier would help calm his nerves. He was broken out of his thoughts when he heard a female voice talk to him. He furrowed his eyebrows as he opened his eyes, stepping backwards a bit as his eyes cast down towards the floor. It was something he did when people talked to him sometimes. “Hi.” he replied back quietly. “I’m new as well. I’ve only been here for three hours, I think.”

Ansley smiled at him, staying kind. “Yeah? It’s nice to know I’ve got someone in the same situation as me. I guess we probably should stick together?” She tried to laugh at the end, but it kind of faded away. Coming into the facility she had this naive idea that everyone would understand everyone else and it would create a sense of bonding. Each hour she spent here, she realized it didn’t. “That’s only if you want to, though.” She said softly.

“Yes?” It was safe to say Joshua wasn’t feeling the brighest today. He had taken a few pills down to help with his anxiety and it had only made him feel hollow, like he wanted to combust but couldn’t. He decided to spend sometime near the front hallway, playing with a rubik’s cube in his hands and making sure everything was in order. His head tilted up so he could have a better look of the girl, scrunching his face as she didn’t seem to look so familiar. “Can I help you?”

“Only if you really want to.” She said slowly, she had no idea what else to do. “I wanted to try to talk to someone, make acquaintances maybe. If I’m going to be here for a while, might as make it less lonely right?”

Tony is lounging around, having had to suffer another awkward huddle with one of his therapists. They were beginning to pull up shit from their agenda, asking him questions about his past and trying to figure out if it would link with his so-called narcissism which he found utterly ridiculous. He isn’t a narcissist. He has grown up with confidence which was what his peers had helped him gain when his had decided to be a couple of jerks who couldn’t ever stay in one place. There’s nothing wrong with possessing confidence. These people are just stupid and they want to bring him down. With so much negativity coating his mind, it’s no surprise to find the young male in another broody state. He didn’t talk to anyone and snapped if he did. They weren’t worth his time. They wouldn’t understand. Gritting his teeth, he looks up to see a girl greeting him. Thinking, oh yet another one, he quickly rolls his eyes and crosses his arms. “What do you want?”

Ansley was kind of suprised by his tone. She shouldn’t have even approached in the first place, probably. She sighed, trying to come up with something good, a good excuse for talking to someone who was probably content with just being by themselves.”You looked lonely.” She stated, quietly. “That’s all, and I wanted to introduce myself.”

“Oh, uh–” Jordan didn’t know if she could muster enough enthusiasm to give a full tour. “Well, there’s an art room, a garden, and a common room with a TV. Most people hang around one of the three.”

“Is there anything like actually stimulating though?” She asked. “Something to get my mind off the thought of being here for a while?”

“They’re both killers. There are other killers, but they’re mostly harmless. Eh, maybe stay away from Riley Sephtis. He pulls you in. But Benjamin is just dangerous. He snaps at simple things. And David is a sociopath. He doesn’t regard people and he does as he pleases. He wouldn’t hesitate to hurt you just for saying hello too loudly.”

“Like they’ve actually hurt people?” She said, kind of not believing it exactly. “Like actually killed people?”

Ansley needed help. She wished her medication worked. She wished her anxiety didn’t cause her to worry about irrational things. She wished her borderline personality didn’t make her react irrationally to irrational thoughts. If all her wishes came true, she wouldn’t be here.  But unfortunately, she wasn’t living in a Disney movie. Two weeks prior to checking in, she had a fight with her room mate. This lead to a long discussion about Ansley’s mental health. A week before checking in, she dropped out of college and packed up all her stuff. She had to get help, it was the only option at this point. Now, she is here. Glendale Mental Health Institution. She’d only seen places like this in horror movies. But she didn’t think it was going to be like a horror movie, maybe because she knew she had to, and she wanted to, get better.  She sat, trying to get adjusted. Maybe people watching would help. She didn’t know yet. She watched every single person, wondering why they were here. Wondering if they knew what she felt like. Wondering if she finally wouldn’t be scared to connect with a few of them.  She looked around for maybe someone to talk to, finally approaching someone. She wasn’t sure if they we’re staff or a patient, as she didn’t pay attention to any introductions she may have had before. “Hi.” She said, trying to be friendly. How do you even introduce yourself to someone in a mental institution? Is this how? “I’m new here, about two hours new here.”

“Benjamin Cane. I wouldn’t get close. Or David Wolfe. They’re not good people. I’d just stay away entirely if possible. Some people aren’t what they seem. Be careful.”

“What’s not good about them?” Despite not usually getting close to people, she believed everyone had a little bit of good in them. A philosophy she had learned from Anne Frank.

“Well..Welcome to Glendale then.” He sighed. It always felt sad to welcome new people here. “Not entirely. It can be fun for a little while after you arrive, but plenty of people are content to be bitter.”

“I should fit right in then.” She nodded slowly. “Is there anything or anyone I should know about before I settle in completely?” She asked.

“Yes. It’s very when you meet new people, but I don’t like doing that much these days. Or when I color, but even that’s becoming boring. Things are boring after a while.”

“I haven’t met a ton of new people here, you’re one of the first.” She said slowly. “Just the some of the staff and what not. So I guess I’m supposed to be having fun?”

“I’m tired of doctors and guards. This place is no fun anymore. I’ve done everything a million times now. If I don’t find something new to do I think I’m going to die.”

Ansley sat near by, listening to the boy complain. “Has it really ever been fun?” She wasn’t sure if she was genuinely curious or upset. “I haven’t done much here but I haven’t found anything ‘fun’”
