Jack Mitchell stumbled through the door of the local ER, panting and bloody. Another night of underground fighting would leave him with a few more scars, but he didn’t mind. The fighting paid a lot and he got bragging rights. Plus, if a certain nurse was on call, she’d make his night a little better by patching up his wounds with precision and accuracy, even as she reprimanded him for getting hurt again.

He was starting to think he got hurt just so he could see her. He sat down in the chair and was glad he had a sweatshirt on to cover up his bruised chest. He held his broken nose gently and prayed it would stop bleeding soon.

She was checking If she accidentally left her writing pen in the room. Sighing that it’s closing hour, the search might gone easier despite the turned off lights. She doesn’t want to bother some patients who slept in some rooms she remembered she got in that day, so she just shine a flashlight for the dark surroundings. It’s not a big place since it’s a small town full of peace, but a patient is a patient.

She found her pen soon in the corner of the corridor. She picked it up and place it in her pocket. It’s an averagely priced pen, but she loves the design and it’s rare to find in local stores.

She then notices a panting noise. She turned her head towards a door to an ER room. She noticed a figure through the door’s window. She gently opened the door and noticed the bloodied man. She sighed, “… You again? ”, she looks confused. This man entered the ER like 2 months ago and now he got more wounds than getting cured. This is a problem. She approached him in confusion yet awareness.

Jack smiled as he saw the nurse enter the room. “Yeah, it’s me again,” he sighed. “I’m starting to think this is turning into a habit.” He shifted in his chair and groaned, clutching his side. “You might want to start soon, doc. I’m a little more worse for wear this time.”

She took an antiseptic and sighed, shaking her head, "You can't turn this into a habit, sir. You want to ended up being paralyzed? Because always severally injuring yourself just for some surgeries is how to get paralyzed."

She lifted his arm gently and poured the antiseptic gently into the wounds. She supposed to get home and feed her cat this hour, but this get into the way

Rafael sat down, kept looking at the stuffed animals in silent. He nodded, “Is it better than being alone? ”, he questioned.

He took one of the mammoths. He kept looking at the plush he’s holding. “I hope you don’t mind I’m taking an animal with me”.

He looked around at the place, hoping to see another things that look interesting.

“So… What have you find? ”

There it is again; a small smile tugging at the corners of the writer’s lips as he glances first at the boy, and then over to the stuffed animal that he takes up in his hands a second later. “Yeah, it’s better than being alone,” he admits, before shaking his head. “And no, I don’t mind if you take one.” So long as the boy could keep ahold of it, the next time they happened to run into axe-swinging lunatics in the forest.

“I didn’t manage to find much. I’m afraid my search was a lot less fruitful than yours.”

The old shed out back had had a couple of batteries in it, but that was about it. Fortunately it would be morning in less than an hour, and they could try to make a little more progress getting back to town. Rafael’s company was better than being alone, but he was sure there were safer places where the boy could be staying than with him.

In an instant, Raf hugged Alan in an excited mood. "Thank you", he smiled and nuzzled the writer's shoulder. He then released the hug and cuddled his new favorite plush.

Rafael turned sad with the frowning writer. He looked at the plush pyramid he just made then back at him. This makes him confused. “Is it that bad to ask that you’re smiling?”

“Why not? I don’t get all cool things in the dark as a strange critter. ”, he sighed. “Sometimes getting stuffed animals is already like getting a lootbox. ”, he placed another one on the stack.

Hands clasped together between his knees, Alan balances on the balls of his feet while he inspects the boy’s Buck-Tooth Charlie pyramid. It’s nice, but of course it isn’t what he’s really thinking about; he’s thinking about the question. So much for trying to avoid the subject.

Still with the thoughtful frown in place, he peers over to the kid. “It’s not bad, no. I just, I wasn’t expecting it. I guess I really don’t smile that often, huh? But that has a lot less to do with you, and a lot more to do with, this place.”

After a beat of silence he turns his attention back to the stack of stuffed animals, gesturing to it with a forward tilt of his head. “So are you planing on keeping one of those, then?”

Rafael sat down, kept looking at the stuffed animals in silent. He nodded, "Is it better than being alone? ", he questioned.

Rafael turned his face back at Alan. He shyly replied, “In a souvenir shop? ”, he blinked. He scanned for a moment before he realized one thing. “… You are smiling. ”. He never saw that before.

With attention being brought to it the smile quickly drops from the writer’s face. Not out of spite or even embarrassment. No, the frown that replaces it is more thoughtful than anything. Thoughtful, mildly confused, and maybe just a touch concerned. Was it seriously the first time that the kid had seen him smile? And if so, how sad was that, really.

Shaking his head and lowering his hands, he moves to take a step closer before crouching down beside Raf.

“Are you telling me you risked venturing out into the night for a bunch of stuffed animals?” Once more, there’s no trace of anything but genuine curiosity to be found in his tone.

Hands cupped together in front of his mouth, the writer breathes warm air into them against the perpetual chill that always seemed to hang in the air in Bright Falls. Regardless, the corners of his mouth still turn up into something of a smile as he watches the boy stack the stuffed animals for a moment before piping up.

“Just where did you happen to find all of those?”

Rafael turned his face back at Alan. He shyly replied, "In a souvenir shop? ", he blinked. He scanned for a moment before he realized one thing. "... You are smiling. ". He never saw that before.

Open Starter

The Sentinel soldier stares at the sky, wondering what the hell could be causing such a racket.

A creature, looked like a terrible mix of a cyborg and a dark entity roams in that known sky. It launches destructive beams from its mouth towards buildings.

The critter opened its eyes, eyes blinking groggily in the dark like a wild animal.

the critter stretched and sat up in the cage.

Remaining motionless Monkey keeps the inquisitive squint on the creature for just a second longer. It really was a peculiar sight. But after a moment and true to his words he sighs, reaching out to undo the lock from across the door. And as he lets it swing open he scoots himself back, just in case; leaving ample room between himself and the cage so that the animal inside can dart out freely– if it so chose.

The critter blinked for a while before silently crawling outside. At some minutes, it pauses for a while, feeling nervous.

This suits the larger man just fine. Less energy means less noise, and less noise means the more likely it is that they’ll be long gone before anybody realizes the creature is missing.

Monkey isn’t stupid; he knows that if the entire cage is missing they’ll know the creature had been taken, and that he’s probably the first one that’ll spring to their minds upon this discovery– at least the minds of the two he had already run into. But he doesn’t want to spend the time it would take to make it look like the animal had gotten loose on its own, and if he let it out now he isn’t entirely sure that it wouldn’t make a break for it.

He’d let it go (once they were far enough away from the settlement that it might not just be captured again), but first, he wanted one good look at it himself. Fortunately, he’d get that chance.

It takes a while to get there but eventually Monkey sets the cage down in what used to be an old parking garage. They’re a few stories up and it’s getting dark, but there’s still plenty of enough light to see by. Sitting himself down in front of the cage, legs crossed beneath him, hands on his knees, he leans forward and gives the ever glowing animal a questioning squint.

“Now, if I open this door, you aren’t gonna try and scratch my face off, right?”

The critter opened his blinky eyes. It looked around in confusion before finding the man outside the cage.

The critter crawled closer, eyes still blinking white in the dark

When the creature inside awakes and appears understandably confused and probably just as concerned (having seen the way it had been treated before he wouldn’t be surprised) Monkey pauses in lifting up the cage, just long enough to bring a raised finger up and press it against his pursed lips: shhh. While it was ridiculous to think that the animal would be able to understand him, maybe it wasn’t so ridiculous to think that it might be able to glean something from his overall relaxed state.

Animals could sense that sort of thing, right? And you couldn’t tell him that the combativeness rolling off of the two from before hadn’t added to its unease.

Either way, once the cage is in hand he turns to leave. Trying to keep it as steady for the creature inside as he can. “Don’t worry,” Monkey says, naturally gruff voice lowered to an equally gruff whisper. “I ain’t gonna hurt ya– we’re gettin’ outta here.”

As suspected the attempted subterfuge hadn’t worked. Monkey found the belligerent duo exasperating beyond belief, so in the end he had thrown up his hands and gone back the way he had came. But of course, he had tailed them back to their settlement. The peaceable route hadn’t worked, and the underhanded route hadn’t worked, so now (refusing to resort to senseless violence as he was) there was only one option left: burglarizing.

Because in the long run the only thing that got hurt there was the creature– and that was only if he didn’t take it. He had waited until it was dark and the cage had been left unattended before making his move.

Approaching the aforementioned cage Monkey glances both ways before leaning down to peer inside, hands propped against his knees. The thing was still alive but sleeping, and that was good; maybe he could get it out of the area before it– or anybody else– woke up. And reaching out to lift up the cage, creature and all, he’d start to do just that.

He swears, one peep from anything before they’re a good couple of miles away and somebody is going to regret something.

“Whoa whoa whoa! ”, the man slapped the stranger’s hand from opening the cage. “We don’t know you. And we already faced too many strange stuffs here. If you are that another of strange stuff, you better get over our dead bodies first. ”.

The critter jolted for the sudden yelling.

The taller man lets out something of a tight chuckle when the other has the gall to slap at his gesturing hand– he can’t even reach it from there, standing a number of feet away form the cage, with the two clowns between him and the creature inside.

As tempting as it is to have the man standing in front of him be the next thing that he raises a hand to, fingers curl into a fist before its lowered back down to his side. Peaceable reasoning clearly wasn’t the right approach, here, so he’d try something else. He shrugs.

“Y’know what, hey, I was just tryin’ to take it off your hands for you. But if you wanna take it back to your settlement and risk attractin’ more of this “strange stuff” to yourselves then by all means, be my guest.”

He doubts a little bit of subterfuge will work, but at this point it’s worth a try.

“If it breathes and moves, then it’s real”. The man looked back at the critter that kept curling at the corner of the cage.

“One of us is the village chief and see what we can do to get rid of this critter. If there’s nothing to do, stabbing will be the solution. ”

The man’s eyebrows make an absentminded jump for his hairline at the comment, a hand coming to rest briefly against one of his hips. These guys, he quickly concludes, are insane.

If it was true, and it was real, were they not the least bit curious about the unnatural light that radiated from it?

Using his free hand to make an idle gesture toward the cage, he says, “Well hell if you’re just gonna kill the thing why not hand it over to me.”

The critter cornered himself. The two men has pitchforks on their hands. It seems that they are farmers. One is old with grey hair, one is younger. The younger one aimed the pitchfork to the stranger. “It tries to eat our crops and perhaps cattles.”

Hands up, Monkey takes a step back when the– of all things– piece of farming equipment is pointed at him. Maybe the pair were more easily hassled than he initially thought.

“You might wanna point that thing someplace else, ‘cause I’m not lookin’ for a fight.”

And wait.

“You’re tellin’ me that thing’s real? What’re ya gonna do with it?”

*Blinks in the dark while being caged* -Shadow! Rafael

Usually not one to butt into other people’s business, Monkey can’t seem to help it when his attention is caught by two other survivors out in the wastelands. It certainly wasn’t the men themselves– running into other people was rare but not unheard of. No, it was what the men were doing.

Day had given way to evening, which made it all the more obvious that the creature they were attempting to cage seemed to be emitting its own source of soft, golden light. Honestly, the taller man’s first assumption was that it was some sort of small mech. Although why somebody would go to the trouble of making one that was A: so small, and B: so organic-looking, was beyond him.

Either way, it was interesting. So interesting in fact that the man drops out of the cover of the tree he had been perched in to curiously (and cautiously) approach the other two. Trying not to seem threatening was a little difficult when you, well, looked like he did. Which was admittedly at least a little of the point, there.

And sure enough the two men pause what they’re doing in favor of giving a slightly suspicious glance in the other man’s direction.

“Now, I’m not tryin’ to intrude here, but I just can’t help wonderin’,” Monkey starts, pointing toward the creature in question as he speaks. “What is that ya got there?”
