Sunken Hills & Sandcastles
An unexpected twist in the Saskatchewan landscape takes place at the Sunken Hills and Sandcastles, which are located near Beechy. We visited the area this spring and were surprised at what we found.
The large, natural sandcastle formations and sunken hills result from the collapse of a natural gas pocket making the rolling hills ooze prehistoric charm. As we hiked the views of Lake Diefenbaker drew us in, so we made the trek down to the shoreline. WARNING: this hike is not for the faint-hearted. The elevation changes aren’t something people normally think of when exploring the prairies, but the hike is challenging. That being said, the views and the chance to explore the shoreline was well worth the achy legs!
The best part is, whether you decide to hike for the afternoon or simply park your car and take in the view, you’re sure to have a story to tell your friends.
Directions: From Beechy travel 7.2 km W on Hwy 342, turn S on Howendale Rd for 29 km. Click here to access a map of the area: http://bit.ly/28NiQTm. **Please note: this natural attraction is located on private land. Ensure that all gates are closed after entering and leaving the area. Wet conditions may limit accessibility.**
Douglas Provincial Park Sand Dunes
Accessible sand dunes are located in numerous locations throughout Saskatchewan. One such place is Douglas Provincial Park.
Named after late Saskatchewan Premier Tommy Douglas, the park is a natural environment facility featuring 27 km of interpreted hiking trails, including a section of the Trans Canada Trail that hugs the shoreline of Lake Diefenbaker.
The trail system in and around the sand dunes is doted with patches of juniper and cacti and is approximately 8 km in length. The desert-like landscape of the active sand dunes doesn’t look or feel like anything you assume to find in Saskatchewan.
We hiked the Dunes Trail which takes you straight (after 2.85 kms) to the major sand dune area. Other trails options in this area of the park include:
Cacti Trail - 4 km Juniper Trail - 1.1 km Dunes Trail - 2.85 km
View a park map here: http://bit.ly/28NIOeA
Directions: Douglas Provincial Park is located 11km S of Elbow on Hwy 19.
Desert Oasis on the Prairies
In the southwest you will find 1,900 square kilometres of sand dunes. Yes, we are talking southwest Saskatchewan. This area, known as The Great Sandhills, contains one of the largest set of active sand dunes in Canada! Needless to say, we HAD to check them out!
We arrived at Sceptre and popped into the local Great Sandhills Museum to get our bearings then hit the road again. To access the dunes you need to take a gravel/dirt road that is impassible if wet. This stretch of road is also leased by local ranchers who use the land as summer pasture for their cattle, so slow down and watch for cows!
When you arrive at the dunes there is a parking lot and trail signage, so you can plan our your trek. Aside from the scenic dunes, make sure you check out boot hill. The cowboy boot arbor was made by a local farmer who has passed and it makes for a great photo opportunity.
There’s nothing like the feeling of soft sand between your toes and you don’t have to go to the beach to experience it, you only have to head towards Sceptre!
Directions: Access to the active dunes is located by taking the first grid road E of Sceptre off Hwy 32, then approximately 22 km S to Great Sand Hills. Watch for signs and parking lot.
