She knew she was just delaying the inevitable - of course she knew that - a pregnancy wasnât something one could keep a secret forever. Not without locking herself in the Manor and refusing to see anyone for months, at least, and that was a sacrifice Narcissa was not willing to make. Especially considering she couldnât think of a hugely valid reason to keep this under wraps. The only explanation she could find for her reluctance to share her news so far stemmed from her aversion to the potential special treatment and the pitying looks she was bound to receive once people knew. A recently widowed pregnant woman wasnât exactly societyâs picture of strength, but Cissa had been doing exceptionally fine, if she did say so herself. The bulkiness of her winter attire had done well to hide her ever developing baby bump thus far, and sheâd dealt with her early bouts of nausea discreetly enough that no one had noticed -- no one brave enough to bring it up with her, at least.
Narcissa sat contemplating this on a bench near the ferris wheel as she twisted the cap off a vial of some muted green liquid, downing the potion swiftly and stashing what remained into her pocket. She had needed a minute to get off her feet, rest and get some food in her system. If you could call it food. She glanced down at her meal in disgust -- it hardly looked edible. Although, she supposed this was to be expected, with someone like Amelia in charge. Cursing her stomach for reaching this level of hungry desperation, she sighed and took a bite, crinkling her nose as she chewed it. Â
âBlasted carnival food,â she muttered, intending the comment not to be heard by anyone but herself, but glancing up when someone sat down on the bench next to her. She raised an eyebrow and swallowed, eyeing the person beside her for a moment before going against her first instinct to just say silent and ignore them. âWhat garbage do they put in here, do you think?â
âHe  is  d e a d!"Â

Amelia expected this to happen. She took a bit of joy in knowing the inevitable was going to happen, and she sat herself down at the table just waiting for Narcissa Malfoy to show up. She knew sheâd throw a fit; the two of them more often than not butted heads about the smallest of things. Still, Amelia glanced over briefly when the blonde arrived, a smirk gracing her lips when she saw her expression and turing back to her companion to continue conversation.
Said companion left when they saw the fury of Narcissa coming toward them, and Amelia set down her glass.
âNarcissa darling.â She looked up and gave her a pleasant smile, crossing her legs at the knees and tilting her chin up to look at her better. âItâs exactly what your ears are registering. Iâve been appointed as the head of the committeeâof course, you can still be on the committee. Iâm sure you have valuable input.â
Narcissaâs skin prickled in annoyance and she glowered down at Amelia, hand on her hip. The obvious satisfaction and smugness written in the womanâs expression was nothing short of infuriating, but she did her best to hide just how infuriating it was to her, save a quick flaring of her nostrils.
Input? Was that Ameliaâs word for already having planned out nearly the entire marketing scheme for the festival? It was obvious who the rightful head of the committee should be, and that someone was not Amelia. âIndeed I do,â she said through her teeth. Not intending to lie down so easily, she twisted her jaw and added with a smile that would have been polite if it was the slightest bit convincing, âWould you be so kind as to point me in the direction of whoever... 'appointed' you?â

It was a good thing that Narcissa was distracted, so she couldnât see when Mary rolled her eyes at her words. Of course, Narcissa as a privileged pureblood witch, didnât care much about justice and how wrong their world was. Mary did care, and she had some pamphlets somewhere hidden, knowing they were important and that someday things would change. There were so many things she could say, right there on the tip of her tongue, but it was for the best if she just kept to herself.
If she had to be honest, Mary wondered the same thing. They were obviously very smart, as they had managed to do it when no one was watching. It just made her wonder if they were right there, pretending to obey the new regime while they planned a way to bring it down. It was exciting. âI think we shouldnât worry about that. The Ministry will never allow them to do it again and I know my father will take them to Azkaban himself if he has to.â
It was fortunate Mary was so talented with a quill, she thought to herself as she stifled a sigh. She was undeniably a smart woman, that much was clear to anyone who had ever skimmed one of her articles -- perhaps that was why her irrationally lax attitude was so frustrating. True, the Ministry was quickly working towards stricter regulations, and no doubt everyone involved in allowing this mishap to occur in the first place would take their responsibilities more seriously in the future, but the Prophet was still essential in swaying public opinions and maintaining a strong, unshaken image for the Death Eaters. She tutted, raising an eyebrow. Alastor was, she knew, a hardworking and dedicated man, but his former affiliation with the resistance at Hogwarts could not be entirely disregarded by Narcissa.
âLucky I donât pay you to have your own opinions, Mary,â she muttered wearily, her heels clicking loudly against stone as she lengthened her stride.Â

Narcissa let out a startled yelp as an unruly adolescent barreled past her, causing her to lose her balance and stumble to one side. The rare good mood that she had found herself in quickly faded as she paled, nauseous for what had to be at least the fourth time today. She gripped the first sturdy thing she came to -- a fence running the circumference of one of the rides -- and concentrated on fighting the urge to empty whatever meager contents were left in her stomach after her episode earlier this morning.Â
As her nausea subsided into anger, Cissa stood up straighter, glancing around to make sure no one important had witnessed her momentary weakness. Her eyes fell on the source of her distress as he was herded back into a group of Hogwarts students by none other than her special snowflake of a prodigal sister. Narcissa pressed her lips together and walked towards her, not really wanting to engage now (or ever, really), but too irritated to leave without saying anything. âDonât you have any measure of control over these...â she curled her lip, disdainfully eyeing the pack of students who were swarming around the face-painting stall, â...prepubescent miscreants?â

âA busy woman,â he agreed with a flourish of a smile, settling with ease into the chair provided and carefully monitoring his posture lest the urge to slouch overrun the knowledge he had to be on his very best game if he wanted to get anywhere today. âDonât worry, I wonât keep you long, Mrs. Malfoy. Iâm sure Mr. Burke will be glad to hear of your regards.â
Be delicate, he reminded himself, chin lifting a little higher as he eyed the desk before her and quill laid neatly across the parchment. âI was simply curious, Mrs. Malfoy,â he began slowly, hands settled across his lap, âKnockturn Alleyâs businesses have always operated under the understanding that there was a certain amount of discretion between themselves and their clients over some of the more prohibited items that can be obtained within our doors, it was an understanding I believe your late husband was very fond of. So I suppose weâve been somewhat..â
He paused, chewing at his lower lip as he measured his next word carefully, âPerplexed to find that there has been an increased interest from some rather intrepid journalists this past week or so. I was wondering, if it isnât too bold, if you might be able to tell me what it is the Daily Prophet is looking for in Knockturn Alley.â
Narcissa tilted her head and listened -- she had been wondering when she would hear complaints from the Knockturn Alley community concerning the Prophetâs recent interest. She stiffened slightly at the mention of Lucius, but kept her expression fixed apart from a slight tightening of her jaw. Once he had come to a conclusion, she leaned forward a bit in her chair and took a moment to collect her thoughts before responding.
âWhile I do understand your concerns about privacy, Alexander,â she started, âIâm afraid it canât be helped. The very nature of the work done at the Prophet makes it nearly impossible not to step on a few toes, in our proceedings. You can rest assured, however, my journalists should be out of your hair by the end of next week, and the confidentialities of individual clients will not be breached. If youâd like to know more about the nature of their investigations, Iâd be happy to send you a copy of the issue detailing their findings once it's been published.â
She paused, clasping her hands in front of her and resting them on her desk. She lifted her chin before adding pointedly, âAdditionally, Iâm inclined to mention, my husband had no influence in the decisions made on account of the Prophet while he was alive, and he certainly has no say in them now.â

Narcissaâs strength had never been up for debate. Even now Emma could still remember the envious manner in which sheâd carried herself throughout Hogwarts: poised and beautiful, and befitting of a crown, with an easy grace to her every look and gesture that simply couldnât be self-taught (oh, sheâd be lying if she said she hadnât tried). Steel framed in porcelain that refused to crack. But even perfection came at a price, and with everything thatâd transpired since Voldemort had taken the helm, it was safe to say her old friend had paid a steeper one than most.
Yet pity was not a color Slytherins wore well, and it was with this in mind that she kept all traces of it from her expression as she smiled warmly instead, âThatâs good to hear. It goes without saying, but if you ever need anything⊠well, you know where to find me.â Her lips thinned at the mention of the pamphlets. âOh, trust me, I saw. They plastered the damn things all over the Alleyââ to admit sheâd been tasked with tearing them down sounded much too demeaning, and so⊠ââtook the guards half the morning to clear them out. And I expect youâre on the mark there. People are fickle; theyâll move on to the next shiny bauble soon enough.â
It was funny how easily the years could come rushing back. She might have faked it till she made it all her life, but it was in the presence of people like Narcissa that Emma was sorely reminded of what she lacked. The pedigree, the posh upbringing⊠all the things she thought sheâd remedied with her sterling quidditch career. That she would never be quite on their level was a thought thatâd been lost amongst the chorus of cheers surrounding her name and the lofty heights of flashy stardom, because at the very least she was still someone. Without that reputation to fall back on, she could feel the slight strain now beginning to tug at her smile, once again mindful of the differences thatâd bolstered both her resentment and admiration for Narcissa so long ago.
She couldnât tell her friend that she felt infinitely more at home in this dusty old shop than she ever had at pureblood parties, and she certainly couldnât tell her the real reason sheâd hung up her broomstick and settled for obscurity. It might have been a while since theyâd seen each other last, and change had certainly encompassed their lives since, but she somehow still felt inferior. Still only half the person Narcissa was. âHavenât had much of a choice,â she answered with a half-sigh. âThe Leagueâs been having cutbacks. Youâd be surprised how many muggleborns and half-bloods theyâd let slip in through the cracks. Take out the trash, though, and youâll find thereâs not much left in the way of actual teams.â Emma gestured emptily at their surroundings. âThis is pretty much all Iâve got at the moment, least until they figure themselves out again. Had you put in an order for something?â
The fact that these rebels had even been capable of executing a plan so widespread and disruptive had been a mistake on their end, Narcissa could admit that to herself at least. Of course, there were a few specific Death Eaters whom the blame probably fell most heavily upon, but the time to point fingers had passed and she supposed it made little difference anymore. âCertainly. Iâm confident this will all blow over nearly as quickly as it came.â The fact that this resistance remained, for the most part, faceless was probably what disturbed her the most -- Cissa was far more comfortable when she knew exactly who she was up against -- but she refused to let that scare her. Instead, she embraced the challenge, strategizing ways to bite off its head without knowing its shape, putting thoughts into action. The worst move possible at the moment was to stand still and wait for it to show its full form.Â
Quidditch was one of those subjects Narcissa didnât really keep up with, outside of the updates and announcements made about it in the Daily Prophet, as had she ever held much of an interest for the sport. Of course, back at Hogwarts she would come out to the big games to support Emma, and from that she had learned the general idea of the sport. Sheâd also learned that Emma was extremely talented with a broomstick. But that was really the extent of her knowledge. Then Lucius came along, more passionate about quidditch than anyone she knew -- save her present company -- and she thanked the stars she had had Emma around to bolster her vocabulary. The semi-recent cancellation of the World Cup, however, was something she did know -- in fact, the article about it had made the front page.Â
âHm,â Narcissa made a noise of disapproval. She hadnât been surprised when she read of the Leagueâs previous lack of restrictions on the lesser-blooded quidditch players, not when the wizarding world had been so high pressed on equality for all the blood types. But now, with the world shifting back to how it should be, she supposed she was pleased the quidditch scene was evolving too, even if it meant a slight delay while it got back on its feet again. âWell, Iâm sure theyâll sort this out quickly and have you back on your broom in no time,â she reassured.
âI hadnât,â she replied, biting her lip before continuing a bit more warily, âActually, I'm here because I heard a rumor of a new item the shop's aquired -- some necklace, a brooch maybe -- with special properties. Word is it can hide what the wearer doesn't want to be found. I was simply curious to know these rumors are true."

âAs what?â Narcissa said, interrupting the little halfblood volunteer who was attempting to talk to her. Her eyes shifted from him to search the room for Amelia, eventually finding her on the other end of the table. Of course, of course she thought she deserved to lead the committee. Not that she had done anything worthwhile so far, besides show up and have a wealthy husband willing to throw his money at the festival.Â
âI-- I was saying as head of the committee, Ms. Bones-Rowle wanted --âÂ
Narcissa didnât wait for him to finish -- instead, she stalked towards Amelia, stopping beside her and waiting for her to wrap up whatever conversation she was having. âAmelia, dear,â Cissa started once the discussion had come to an end and the third party had walked off. Her eyes narrowing slightly, she tilted her head and asked, âWhatâs this Iâm hearing about you heading the committee?â

Narcissa Malfoy was intimidating. The âIâll bit your head off if you donât do as I sayâ kind, so Mary tried to stay out of her way. It was easier than she had originally thought, she only had to do her job and she wouldnât see the older witch in days, but there were also times that she saw her face every five minutes and those were most definitely the worst days. Besides, Mary could do her own investigations and articles in the safety of her office without having to see any of them in a while.
Whatever the Malfoy woman wanted to, Mary would do it and just get over it as soon as possible so she could go home early and forget about this for a couple of hours. Disturbance? Those pureblood people didnât care about equality; they only cared about keeping themselves safe. For all she knew, they were all people who had nothing better to do instead of people who were actually fighting for a better future. Fighting Narcissa wasnât Maryâs place; she had learned to keep to herself unless she had no other choice. âYou mean the pamphlets? Those were hardly a disturbance. They were taken down like⊠five minutes later, who knows if anyone else but us saw them.â
Narcissa kept walking, not bothering to glance at the girl as she spoke. She was listening, though, and her words made Cissaâs skin prickle in annoyance. She didnât consider herself a particularly paranoid person -- thorough, absolutely. Cautious, almost always -- but now more than ever, every action she took was justified, and could very well make the difference between quenching a potential rebellion and leaving it be, letting it spread. She raised her eyebrows and twisted her jaw, momentarily contemplating whether the Moody girlâs ignorant lack of concern warranted a response.
âIt isnât a matter of who saw them,â she began with pursed lips, although she was sure even Mary knew the inaccuracy of that assumption. Nearly the entirety of the wizarding world, she was confident, had heard of yesterdayâs embarrassing breach, even if they hadnât been there to witness it first-hand. âThe real concern lies in the fact they were able to distribute the pamphlets at all. And in such a public display, no less.â
fletchxr
All things considered, Mundungus was sure that heâd had worse ideas. Opportunism was a habit that rarely tread lightly but for a long while now Mundungus had been walking a very fine line â this was certainly not the balancing act that heâd had in mind when heâd begun his newest business venture but the wrong noses sniffing around Knockturn Alley was a concern that had to be addressed. If only Handsome Jack was a little more adept at blending in or Emma was a little less inclined to ask why he didnât want the Prophets reporters snooping in his alley. He stared again down at his knuckles, poised before the door and wondered exactly howheâd allowed himself to wander so far into territory he most definitely didnât belong within. Needs must, he reminded himself firmly, reaching up to knock firmly at the door lest the curious eyes that had been glued to his back get any ideas about his hesitation.
The summons enacted a transformation; a chameleon reclaiming a new skin as his shoulders rolled back, spine straightening and chin tipping upward. His smile was cordial â the politest variant he had in his wide and wondrous arsenal as he ducked inside the door. Emma would hardly believe it if she could see him now; clean fingernails and sharp suit, a variation on the theme of respectable businessman. âThatâs my father,â he replied lightly, smile inching up at the corners and Belfast lilt slipping out in full force, âBut he liked it enough to pass it on to me, so I suppose that Alex will do. I hope Iâm not interrupting anything important, Mrs. Malfoy â I had a few questions I was hoping you might be able to help me with.â
Still the commotion of the morning had stayed with him, a stirring of recklessness in his chest that had started with those pamphlets and led him straight here. Rebellion drew eyes â pamphlets liberally pasted all over Knockturn Alley drew eyes â the last thing he needed was more eyes on his alley. âMr. Burke would have come himself of course,â he started, gesturing towards the seat opposite her desk in a motion that clearly questioned, âMay I?â before settling into it, palms smoothing the fabric of his slacks flat, âBut he doesnât get out much these days and all of the .. unpleasantness this morning left himââ
His nose wrinkled briefly, running through the various synonyms that wouldnât end in his employer throttling him with arthritic hands should he ever hear of it, ââIll-suited for company.â
Charming widows out of their valuables was a skill heâd picked up early in his trade, but secretswere much harder to pry from lips than jewels from hands and Narcissa Malfoy was hardly your garden variety widow. Time to ease in. His eyes dipped to the pages laid out before her and rose again. âI havenât come at a bad time have I?â
Narcissa listened to his introduction, inclining her head slightly to acknowledge it. Her eyes followed his movements as he walked towards her desk, making a few snap judgements as he approached. He carried himself as a distinguished gentleman yet he spoke humbly, easily -- a charming yet somewhat contradictory (although not terribly unusual, in pureblood society) combination. âYes, that is the purpose of this meeting, as I understand it,â she responded curtly.
She nodded briefly to his unspoken question, watching him settle into the chair and leaning back slightly in her own. âThatâs quite understandable. This morningâs mishap was...â she paused, a humorless smile crossing her face momentarily as she searched for the right word, ârather unsettling for us all. Be sure to give him my regards.â
Unsettling it was, but the more progress she was making towards preparing her counterattack for tomorrow morning, the more confidence she was regaining. Of course she was disturbed by this unknown threat, and it would be foolish to assume they wouldnât attempt another stunt like this, but she always felt more in control with the quill in her hands, and this situation was no different.
âItâs no worse than any other time, I suppose,â she replied, waving her hand dismissively. âNonetheless I am, as Iâm sure youâre aware, a very busy woman -- so I trust youâll be brief.â
