It was ironic, she had to give it to the fates. Her eyes rolled over the all but ruined entrance, noting every cracked, chipped, and charred remnant. To think that before the chaos that was the previous day, lovers stood in this exact spot, hoping to steal a minute, a calm, intimate minute, was too ironic, indeed. Millicent wondered if they ever found it. She wondered if the calamity brought the would-be lovers closer, or if as the chaos died down, so did the urge to be close to another human. She adjusted her weight on her feet, the prophet under her arm, and hair from slapping her cheeks. There was no telling how long sheād been standing there. Aimless had a face today, and she would wear it proudly. She stopped by the Ministry to see if she could be of any help, but upon seeing the mass confusion there, she about faced at the door. She was sure her āadvisorā would be along at any moment to politely remind her of the rebels they should all be searching for, but all Millicent could do was remain stock still. It wasnāt until the rustling debris behind her sounded that she even moved at all. She didnāt jump easily, knowing full and well her capabilities, but instead she gave an inquisitive look to her new company before asking, āDid you have a chance to ride beforeā¦.ā she trailed off, not feeling the need to put a description on the previous dayās events. āI meant to, but you know what they say about good intentions.ā
Everything was in ruins.
Twelve days prior, Amelia had felt so smug about being committee head, planning everything and making sure she got on Narcissa Malfoyās nerves while doing it. Ever since Lord Voldemort had risen to power, any position sheād required had been reduced to nothing but mindless magical mishaps, and this was one time that she could actually prove herself to be more than the halfbloodĀ that the new heads of society had deemed soiled. What would happen now? Sheād likely get lowered even further down the ladder, perhaps even fired or put on leave indefinitely. Of course, Amelia could blame it all on the security theyād hired, but could she really place the blame on poor Bennett and Remus?
Sheād put the blame on any other wolf pack member but them.
Amelia hadnāt been aware that she had company until Millicent Bagnold was speaking at her right, and she turned her head to watch the woman uncertainly. At least someone seemed just as sad as she was about what happened, though they were for different reasons she was sure. Her words only confirmed those suspicions.Ā āI got to ride everything once,ā she said slowly, looking away again to stare at the rubble.
The worst part of this all? Children had died here. Amelia was heartless, yes, but even that set a bad taste in her mouth.
āHow didnāt we see this coming?ā
