Jackie and I (Camilla) were lucky enough to see one of the last performances of Great Comet and talk with the show’s Associate Director, Sammi Cannold, backstage afterwards.

the story so far

We’re four recent college grads visiting New York City to write a musical. Last winter, we won Stanford’s 72-Hour Musical Project with a pitch for a dystopian character piece called Towers. Now we’re making it a reality and trying to document our work as we go.

WE HAVE MADE IT! Following six months of eager anticipation, we have arrived in New York City.

Around 2pm, we moved into our Brooklyn-based dorms (curiously called the St. George “Towers” …coincidence?!? “There are no coincidences.” - Jackie). After reuniting on a street corner and gabbing excitedly in our outside voices for twenty minutes, we realized we should probably move from the street corner and start our day of exploring our neighborhood and catching up.

We began with a trip to the art supplies store to stock up on sticky notes, markers and a legal pad larger than a stovetop. We then stopped in a coffee shop to catch up on the past three months of our lives since graduation, start planning our next couple of weeks and debate the story structure of Harry Potter. Our day ended with dinner at an Indian restaurant, where we toasted the commencement of our adventure with a lot of spicy food and a lot of water.

Our stomachs full of curry, we spent our night lounging on Jackie’s bed, stalking Nikhil on LinkedIn and watching YouTube videos, including “Bet It Go” three times (below).

Looking out my window before heading to sleep, I felt in awe of this chance to spend two weeks with a team as upbeat and bustling with creative energy as the city itself. I fell asleep next to a window overlooking an alive New York and its twinkling TOWERS.
