Heads up: this is a long post (even for me), but it's more for myself than anything. Read on if you'd like. . This spring, I pushed myself to mental, emotional, and physical limits finishing my BFA thesis semester. I ended up so happy and proud with what I'd spent so much time, sweat, blood, and tears on. . After graduation, I decided I would give myself a little bit of a break. I had exhausted and deprived myself of some of those really important parts of being a human like sleeping and spending time with the people I care about. I wanted to allow myself to focus on and adjust to my new full-time job, plan for and go on my Italy study abroad adventure, and just let myself be a human. I also wanted to spend time clearing out the second bedroom of my house and setting up a studio space for myself. . In the time that I gave myself, I've accomplished so much. I spent an incredibly enlightening two weeks studying abroad in Italy, nourishing my passion for art and art history, all while exploring a place that casually blended the present with the past and inspired me in so many ways. . I've been able to spend valuable time with loved ones that I had barely seen for months, if not longer. . At my new position at DSN, I've found a fulfillment and passion for what I do and the people I work with on a regular basis. . I joined a gym, and have been working out and eating healthier in an attempt to take care of myself, at least a little bit. . I've looked through all the STUFF in my second bedroom, and I'm working on getting some organization/storage and putting together some sort of panel floor/base/tarp thing to protect the carpet from my undeniable art messiness. . That being said, I've been feeling a compulsive tug in my gut to really spend more time creating again. So this is my promise to do that. The picture here is me just letting myself get crazy and scribbly and ridiculous in an attempt to get back into that exploratory, creative mode. Above that is a special edition of time I stumbled upon that is all about the science of creativity. Stay tuned for doodles, experiments, and works-in-progress! 🤘♥💪🎨 . . #scribble #doodle #artistofinstagram #determined
Day 7: Florence. I got to see the Chimaera of Arezzo (which I did a research paper/project on) and it was spectacur to see in person. Another amazing day in the books. - P.S. I've been seeing this since day 1, but like 80% of the people here have small dogs and take them everywhere with them. It is adorable. . . . . . #italy #florence #artistabroad #artistsoninstagram #artinitaly #architecture #unoitaly2018 #unocfam #unocfamily #unomaha #schoolofthearts #unoitaly2018 #knowtheo #chimaera #chimera (at Florence, Italy)
Day 7: Florence. A ridiculous overload of amazing artwork today. My phone died at the Uffizi, so I couldn't get pictures of some of my favorites. But that's alright! Day 6: Orvieto and Venice! We travelled through the gorgeous Tuscan countryside to Orvieto and happened across a parade that's been a tradition there since 1209. It was very festive and was also just a very amazing town to be in. They were so nice to us there, the food was great, and the whole place was gorgeous. - We hopped on a train to Florence, checked in and got settled, and then some of us went on to have an excellent dinner near the river ♥🇮🇹☀⛪💠 . . . . . . . #italy #orvieto #florence #italianfood #italian #artistabroad #artistsoninstagram #artinitaly #architecture #unoitaly18 #unoitaly2018 #unocfam #unocfamily #unomaha #schoolofthearts #unoitaly2018 #knowtheo (at Orvieto)
Day 5: last day in Rome. This morning we started out by passing some ruins which served as a cat sanctuary (adorable) on our way to see the Pantheon. - After that we went to Piazza Navona and saw the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi before splitting off into our own separate adventures. - I wandered around the plaza and into a baroque church called Sant'Agnese in Agone, and then meandered around until I found a nice little café in the shade to sit and eat lunch. - This afternoon, we were fortunate enough (thanks to @adrianrduranphd) to be able to see the studio of an incredible Art Historian who's lived in Rome since 1959. He shared a few of his many maps from different points in history and his exhibition of prints from a point in time when Rome was isolated from the rest of a newly united Italy. It was so amazing to be let in on a sliver of the wisdom of such a knowledgeable scholar. It really allowed me to stitch together all the experiences I've had over the past few days. - Tomorrow we set out for Orvieto in the morning, where we'll spend some time before arriving in Florence tomorrow evening. I'm sad to leave, but so excited for what's to come. 😊💠🇮🇹☀ . . . . . . #italy #rome #artistabroad #artistsoninstagram #artinitaly #architecture #unoitaly18 #unoitaly2018 #unocfam #unocfamily #unomaha #schoolofthearts #unoitaly2018 #knowtheo (at Rome, Italy)
Rome day 4: BEST DAY YET, and probably ever. Villa Giuila, Villa Borghese, and The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna. There were amazing Greek and Etruscan Vases galore. Bernini made me mirror his Persephone's cheek. I saw my first Van Gogh in person. Caravaggio, Balla, Monet, Cezanne, Burro, Giacometti, Duchamp, *trails off into hysterical gibberish* So yeah. Amazing, amazing, amazing day. Spending time with a great group, having great conversations, and learning so much. 🇮🇹😊💠☀ . . . . . #italy #rome #artistabroad #artistsoninstagram #artinitaly #architecture #unoitaly18 #unoitaly2018 #unocfam #unocfamily #unomaha #schoolofthearts #unoitaly2018 #knowtheo (at Rome, Italy)
Rome day 3, part 2! More amazing art at Musei Vaticani. Also a couple food pictures, because it tasted too good to not throw in here. . . . . . #italy #rome #artistabroad #artistsoninstagram #artinitaly #architecture #unoitaly18 #unoitaly2018 #unocfam #unocfamily #unomaha #schoolofthearts #unoitaly2018 #knowtheo (at Vatican Museums - Musei Vaticani)
Rome: day 3, part 1. We went to St. Peter's Basilica today and the Vatican museums. Spent almost all day geeking out over breathtaking art. We also climbed all the way to the top of the dome at the Basilica! So many steps, but totally worth it. . . . . . #italy #rome #artistabroad #artistsoninstagram #artinitaly #architecture #unoitaly18 #unoitaly2018 #unocfam #unocfamily #unomaha #schoolofthearts #unoitaly2018 #knowtheo (at Vaticano, Roma)
I didnr post yesterday (due to exhaustion) but here's Rome Day 2! It was a long, sweaty, hot, day, but we saw some amazing shit, and it ended with some refreshing beer and prosecco. Highlights for me were the Palatine Hill, the Capataline Wolf, and some gorgeous Greek vases (which I couldn't get good pictures of because glass). . . . . . #italy #rome #artistabroad #artistsoninstagram #artinitaly #architecture #architecturaldecay #unoitaly2018 #unocfam #unocfamily #unomaha #schoolofthearts #unoitaly2018 #knowtheo (at Rome, Italy)
First day in Rome! So stoked at the fact that I'm actually here. So far, we've only spent a few hours exploring a tiny portion of the city, and I'm already awestruck. - I will say I'm disappointed in myself at not bringing any art supplies with me (besides a few pens). I intended to, but in the scramble to get everything ready, it somehow got missed despite the priority level I put it at. However, I'm going to try to look at it more as an opportunity to treat myself to a nice sketchbook (maybe a leather-bound one?) while I'm here. - I love the way modern-day melds with antiquity here. Coming from the US (and a relatively new area of Omaha at that), it's mind-boggling to be surrounded by gorgeous buildings that have been there for centuries and marble steps warped smooth by the millions of feet that have walked there before mine. - It's an excellent breeding-ground for architectural decay--I keep coming across amazing little highly-textured distressed areas everywhere, and I'm finding it hard to limit myself in the number of pictures I take. I hope to find a good balance between taking reference photos to bring home with me for future projects, and seeing things with my own two eyes instead of through a lens. But I think I'm doing alright so far. - Another thing I love about this city is its color palette. Everywhere I look I see deep ochres, buttery yellows, burnt oranges, soft peach-tones, (grossly) sage river-water, and vibrant vines crawling all over the place. I feel as though I've stepped right into a painting. Or a series of thousands of paintings done by a variety of artists over the years. - I can't wait to take it all in over the next two weeks 🇮🇹☀💠⛪ . . . . . . #italy #rome #urbandecay #potentialreferencephotos #artistsabroad #artistsoninstagram #artinitaly #architecture #architecturaldecay (at Rome, Italy)
