I really do not think the average person understands how different the training resources and access are for a cis man playing sports vs everyone else. I wrote an article last month about how until 2020 they were given the Swedish women’s national hockey team expired protein bars for tournaments and only five practices leading up to it. More often than not people who aren’t cis able bodied men playing a sport do not have equipment properly fitted to them. Women’s teams do just straight up get less court or field or ice time. Coaches and trainers will refuse to train you on certain things because they just assume you cannot do something.
Idk. We have seen the athletic accomplishments of cis men come very far in the past century as they got more specialized training and the sports industry as a whole grew. Yet People still really think physical advancements and progression can only be done by cis men, and the the upper limit of what’s been recorded by everyone else is this permanent, unmovable thing. For a long time people thought it was impossible for a woman to do a triple axel until it happened.
what was your writing process for devotion? did you plan it out before you wrote?
Devotion is loosely inspired by something that happened to a friend of mine, except that it doesn't end in a horrible screaming breakup.
When I write lately I scribble out plans ahead of my actual writing and then overwrite them as I get to that point in the story. I planned the first 2 or 3 chapters, I think? And the others I wrote more on the fly.
An author of another wm fic is accusing you of plagiarism, saying you copied her super famous hr fic. Kinda condescending of her lmaoooo
Thanks for the heads-up! I definitely didn't copy anyone (much less a 'super famous' hr fic I haven't read), but if someone wants to send it to me that'd be great. I love themes of religious guilt (I'm guessing Ilya's the religious one, based on his cross?).
hello! i just finished reading Devotion & i’m not a commenter but i wanted to let you know how beautiful i thought the theming was with Will going from “God is watching and I’m not good enough / I haven’t been good enough / I can’t be good enough” to his “God is watching and I will be good enough.”
I’m bisexual and only out to a certain close people because I’m still actively in religious spaces (though my current church is like the church you described) so this journey Will took is one I’ve also taken, but seeing it written out so plainly was wonderful. Thank you for this sentence and I will now also be reminding myself that God is watching AND I am good enough.
(Sorry to dump a bit, just wanted to thank you for this story! And let you know it was meaningful!)

My own relationship to God is a little bit distant, but I really wanted to try writing someone more invested in the Church. Hopefully the risk panned out.
So I'm editing/finishing up Devotion, and this scene had to go to make room for other, more plot relevant scenes. It's fairly tame, but I do enjoy the old man I threw in there.
Four hours into the flight, Will gets up to go to the bathroom. When he comes back, an old man is leaning over his empty seat, speaking to Mack. Will isn’t sure what’s being said, but he knows what kind of opinions a man who looks like that is likely to have. He rushes over.
“What’s up?” he asks, faux-casual.
Mack looks up and past the old man. His expression isn’t trapped or distressed: there’s no sign he’s upset. Will still rolls his shoulders back and prepares for a battle.
“This is Roy,” Mack says. “He’s a fan.”
“Nice.”
“I was hoping to say hi,” Roy says. He’s holding a crumpled baseball hat in one hand. “I was wondering if it was you two when I was boarding… my grandkids are never gonna believe me.”
“You want a selfie?” Mack offers, and his media face slides down over his smile like oil over water.
“I’d love one,” Roy says, fumbling with his phone. When he holds it up, the camera’s facing the wrong way, and Will sighs internally.
“I think you’ve gotta turn the camera around, sir,” Mack says politely. “Hey, Will, get in here.” He pats Will’s seat.
“Oh,” Will says.
“Get in here,” Mack repeats, smiling his carefully-curated media smile. And– yeah, this is probably a good thing, right? Making a good impression? Rem
Will gets in there. Roy holds up the camera, his thumb over the lens. Mack reaches forward and pinches the spare flesh on Will’s hip. Help him out, Will knows he’s saying.
“Here,” Will says politely, stands, and takes Roy’s phone. “Let me.”
When the selfie’s been taken, he hands the phone back. Roy zooms in on each of their faces, one after the other.
“Thanks,” he says, and sticks his hand out for Mack and Will to shake in turn. “Like I say, my grandkids are just gonna lose their minds.”
“No problem,” Mack says, and opens his mouth like he’s going to go on.
“No problem,” Will cuts him off, and pointedly starts scrolling through his phone.
“Well, I’ll let you go, boys,” Roy says, taking the hint. He turns and starts walking up the aisle to the bathroom.
Will leans towards Mack, deliberately putting his back to the aisle. He doesn’t want anyone else to recognize them.
Mercifully, no one does, and they touch down undisturbed on the tarmac at Boston Logan. Their seats at the front of the plane let them exit first, and they make their way through the terminals to the exit walking quickly. Will only realizes when they reach the stairs down to the baggage claim that they’ve been taking strides in sync: right foot-left foot falling together like soldiers.
Mack is antsy at the baggage claim, shifting from one foot to the other with a speed that almost makes him look like he’s hopping.
“How long do you think it’ll be?” he says when Will asks. Will leans against him, presses their bodies together from shoulder to knee. He can feel Mack’s phone buzzing against his thigh.
“I don’t know,” Will says, and “I don’t know,” when Mack asks again, and then “Probably like five more minutes,” when the other passengers from their flight have caught up with them and Mack asks a third time. Across the baggage carousel, Roy nods at them: Will nods back, but Mack– who certainly saw it– doesn’t react.
Finally, the carousel begins to move. Mack’s bag is among the first out, and Mack drags it off the belt with two hands. He practically sprints out the sliding glass door, leaving Will to grab both their carry-ons and follow him.
Mack is shifty on the bus to the parking garage, too, glaring out the window and at the other passengers and even at Will. Will reaches up to his throat for reassurance and finds nothing.
“Are you– are you okay?” he asks, and Mack nods curtly.
“I’ll be good once it’s just us again. Once we get out of here.”

I think people are shocked! It's such a big move (you know, for social media) and it's so obviously about the video. I think they think that Will's being homophobic, and he's halfway to being cancelled when he refollows Mack, which doesn't exactly wipe the slate clean either-- people are still suspicious of him. There's kind of a Mack Defense Squad thing happening in Tumblr-adjacent circles, and those people aren't going to trust Will for months to come (if, of course, Will and Mack go back to hanging out together very publicly...). On the other hand, more conservative NHL fans are quietly pleased with him and see the brief unfollow as a Brave Stand against This Sort Of Thing.

oh I love the myth of st george, specifically the weird version where he and the princess terrorize the townspeople into converting to Christianity. I love all the 'saint killing dragon/devil' art out there, though my favorite is one at the Met Cloisters where St Michael stabs the devil through his lower jaw, and the devil gives him this weird almost trusting look. It's always influencing me.
god I can barely IMAGINE the conversations Mack must have had to have with his dad. I think Rick C would try to be understanding and patient about it, but would accidentally veer into making it way too personal as he tried to find ways to turn this whole thing to their advantage, actually.
reading always comes first for the second time in a row w tears in my eyes. the bit where rick ties mack's skates and mack thinks of him as his squire makes me miss my dad so much. WHAT a rick. i love it SO!!
I love writing Rick (the Rick that lives in my head) so much, he is SUCH a character. Like, a fundamentally good dad, but he prioritizes the game so strongly-- but then again so does Mack. So it's okay.
(I always used to think of my dad that way, too, when he would help me with my sports gear. Oh, to be a kid playing a game again.)
