The World Trade Organization has sought to follow through with the Agenda 2030. One of its objectives it to improve rural economies world wide.

The WTO agreed that agriculture is one of the most important aspects of rural economy and also contributes in a global scale. Producing food to eat is vital for our world to achieve sustainability. Currently, many points have been acknowledged to initiate with this reform that allows better development for agricultural opportunities. These objectives were introduced on February of 2020:

• expansion of developmental investigations

• aperture of environment towards innovation and technology

• regulate price policies and incentives

•market infrastructure and irrigation investment

Transformation and promotion of the rural economy

In least developed, and in many other developing countries, most people still live in rural areas, face limited economic opportunities and encounter a high incidence of poverty. Limited access to backbone services such as power, water, transport, digital connectivity and finance are among a range of constraints that reduce possibilities for value addition in the rural economy and productivity growth in agriculture. Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, youth and women also face specific issues in the rural economy, including in least developed countries.

Rural development and transformation is a policy priority for developing countries and their development financing partners.

Important information is collected on rural development policies from partners and donors. It seeks to further develop knowledge in relation to agricultural and rural economic empowerment.

World Trade Organization

The WTO was established in 1995 as the successor organization to the General Agreement on Customs Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The aim of the WTO is to help importers and exporters to carry out their activity more efficiently, with fewer obstacles to trade, and improve the welfare of member countries. It is the only international organization that deals with the rules that govern trade between countries and that tries not only to reduce barriers to trade such as tariffs and quotas, but also define rules of “fair competition” that establish penalties for dumping (sale of goods below their cost of production) or other proscribed practices.

The WTO agreements have been negotiated and signed by 144 of the countries involved in world trade and ratified by their respective national parliaments. These agreements are primarily contracts that guarantee important trade rights to member countries and oblige governments to maintain laws and regulations that restrict trade within agreed limits.

Why do we need wto?

Since the end of the Second World War, economic activity is increasingly globalized, mainly due to the spectacular increase in international trade (imports and exports) and the consequent changes in financial agreements necessary to facilitate such trade. Inevitably, these changes also raised important political issues and during this same period many were created or reoriented international economic institutions in order to provide the “sets of norms formal or informal ”necessary for the world economy.

Today, international institutions try to help nations achieve economic goals, WTO is no exception. And it does so by promoting sound economic policies such as:

✓ Improve economic efficiency and maintain market competitiveness.

✓Provide public goods, eg primary education

✓Clearly define and enforce property rights (i.e. the rights of individuals to own and distribute goods).

✓Promote the economic development of low-income countries.

✓Improve the quality of life and reduce the costs of domestic and international trade providing better public infrastructure (eg transport systems and services and basic health and safety regulations).

✓Promote sound macroeconomic stabilization policies (that is, policies monetary and fiscal) that contribute to reducing unemployment and inflation not only short term, but, and especially, long term.

✓Reduce tariffs and other obstacles to trade.

Trade and other economic activities have a increasingly international scope. In order to facilitate this increase in international activity, certain economic institutions have evolved. These institutions perform important roles in developing economic policies that improve efficiency economic and maintain competitive markets, provide public goods and correct other market failures, define and enforce property rights, promote the economic development of low-income countries, promote sound macroeconomic stabilization and reduce tariffs and other barriers to trade. Even if some international institutions and organizations - and the policies they have applied - controversial, most economists believe that the success of the development of low-income countries depends on the evolution of these market institutions fundamental.

A three-person panel of WTO trade experts said Washington broke with global regulations in 2018 when it slapped more than $200 billion in levies on a slew of Chinese goods. Since March 2018, the United States has imposed tariffs on $400 billion in Chinese exports.
