I wanna know about translation for Talk Shop Tuesday!! Did you get started as a pro translator first and then moved to translating fic, or the other way around?

Well, tbh, I started as a fansubber on some cartoon shows XD French networks don't really care for cartoons as a genre, so my friends and I did our best for years to make our favorite shows accessible to all French speakers. To give you an idea of the amount of work, I translated and/or proofread like, 75% of our Steven Universe subs. Songs included.

Then I moved on to fics: I noticed when reading fics that in some case, my mind would go "I wonder how I could say it in French, and give that same feeling it gives me rn". I took a really long time translating my first fic - in fact I started way before asking permission from the author, because I wanted to be sure I was going to finish and be ready before trying to post anything. That was in 2018 - I have now 47 works posted on AO3, almost 1,5 million words ^^

So yeah, the pro translation came after that - a bit weirdly, via an ad on Facebook that could have been a scam but turned out to be true. I had a few years of fic translation under my belt already, and they didn't ask for a diploma, so I passed a trial and that was that! So now I work for an online publisher that deals mostly in mass produced romance, and I'm having a lot of fun, even if I complain a lot during the process.

I realize that's a bit of a long answer for the question you asked XD But now you know everything about my journey as a translator!

Your original prose gets lost in translation, and we want you to reclaim it so you can see it in all its glory.

This is an event aimed at seeing more languages on AO3 besides English. It involves translating fanfic or a brand-new one in your native language.

FAQ

"English is my native language." In that case, you can take the opportunity to try translating your fics into another language you know, or ask someone who speaks that language to do it.

"My native language is derived from English." But it isn't English, innit. Accepted.

"I want to translate someone else's work." PLEASE, ask the author first.

Surprise ! Le chapitre 14 est là ! Est-ce que je vais continuer de progresser à ce rythme ? hahahahahahaha... hum... Bref. Un petit avant-goût ? Volontiers :

Base de Theodev, six ans et deux mois plus tôt

Quand Bodhi entra dans la cantina après sa patrouille, il fut surpris de trouver Jyn avachie dans un coin, en train de bouder dans sa tasse de gnôle. « Jyn ! Tu ne pars pas demain matin ?

— Ouais, marmonna-t-elle.

— Pourquoi tu n’es pas avec Cassian, main dans la main, en train de vous chuchoter des mots doux à l’oreille ? » Il leva une main. « Si vous faites d’autres choses ensemble, ne m’en parle pas. S’il te plaît. »

Cassian et Jyn travaillaient à « définir leur relation » depuis environ trois mois, et ça avait l’air de bien se passer. Elle filait tout droit dans ses bras maintenant, quand elle rentrait de ses missions avec les Éclaireurs, dormait dans ses quartiers même lorsqu’il était absent ou de service tard dans la nuit, et il y avait des rumeurs comme quoi on les aurait surpris en train de se donner la main. Ce n’était pas de cette façon que Bodhi menait ses propres relations, pour ainsi dire, mais cela le rendait heureux de voir ses amis si visiblement heureux. Et en plus, il avait très souvent l’occasion de les taquiner jusqu’à ce que Jyn rie ou jure avec vigueur, ou que Cassian rougisse et change de sujet.

Au lieu de rire, elle prit une gorgée de sa boisson. « Je ne sais pas où il est, et je m’en fiche. »

Bodhi se renfrogna. « De l’eau dans le gaz ? »

Elle haussa les épaules et prit une mine encore plus sinistre.

« Sérieusement, dit Bodhi. Qu’est-ce qui ne va pas ? »

Il crut qu’elle n’allait pas lui répondre, mais elle dit « Tu sais qu’on a ce nouveau chef d’escouade, depuis que Kyrashta a clamsé pendant cette mission dans le système Calchix.

— Ouais. » Jyn avait aimé son ancien chef d’escouade. Elle avait eu du mal à encaisser son décès. « C’est quoi son nom, à la nouvelle ?

— Dimiclar, cracha Jyn. Oooh, pardon, Lieutenant Dimiclar. Madame est un officier. »

Et hop ! Le chapitre 13, vu que j’ai eu un peu de temps pour avancer ^^ et ça commence comme ça :

Ce n’était pas qu’ils avaient décidé de tenir ça secret, mais taquineries mises à part, Jyn n’était pas du genre à montrer son affection en public et Cassian non plus. Ils se rendirent donc de concert à la cafétéria pour le petit-déjeuner, comme ils le faisaient parfois.

Elle lui jeta un regard quand ils prirent un tournant, en essayant de déterminer s’il était évident que les choses avaient changé entre eux. Est-ce qu’elle voulait que ce soit le cas ?

Il avait l’air comme d’habitude. Foutus espions, franchement.

Quand ils eurent récupéré leurs plateaux, Cassian pointa Bodhi à une table libre, et ils se dirigèrent vers lui.

Bodhi leva la tête. « Je vois que tu l’as trouvé », dit-il à Jyn.

« Ouais », dit Cassian en s’installant. Jyn hésita un instant, puis s’assit à côté de lui. Elle était de ce côté de la table de toute façon.

Bodhi marqua une pause avec une fourchette de hachis protéiné à mi-chemin de sa bouche. Son regard alla de l’un à l’autre, puis il sourit largement. « D’accord, dit-il. Bien. Bien.

—Je sais que tu ne parles pas de ce hachis », dit Jyn après en avoir pris une bouchée.

— No-oon », chantonna Bodhi toujours en train de sourire, comme un idiot, de l’avis de Jyn.

Cassian secoua la tête. « Très bien. D’accord. Jyn et moi sommes— » Il la regarda. Ils n’avaient même pas discuté encore de ce que c’était. « On essaie de définir tout ça. Ensemble.

— Vous deux essayez de définir ça depuis que je vous ai rencontrés », dit Bodhi, mais il avait tout de même l’air ravi. « Combien de temps ça va prendre ?

— Longtemps, j’espère », dit Cassian.

Jyn se doucha de manière expéditive, comme à son habitude, mais prit son temps pour se laver les dents et se rhabiller. Elle étudia son reflet dans le petit miroir pendu au mur, les petits morceaux qu’elle pouvait en apercevoir. Son corps semblait être resté le même, avec les mêmes vieilles cicatrices et quelques nouveaux bleus après l’entraînement.

Pourtant, elle se sentait différente. Plus douce, et un peu érodée, après toute la discussion qu’ils avaient eue. Tout ce qu’ils avaient partagé, et ce qu’elle n’avait pas partagé. Elle avait le sentiment que lui aussi avait tu certaines choses.

Elle s’était tout de même ouverte davantage avec lui qu’avec aucun autre de ses amants passés. Mais il s’agissait de Cassian, et c’était différent avec lui.

Bouh ça fait un moment que je suis pas passée sur ce blog. Allez zou, anecdote : le truc qui m'a fait tiquer aujourd'hui, c'est une autrice qui parle d'un décor "with a warm color palate" au lieu de palette. Voilà voilà.

Y a pas à dire, on a quelques casse-têtes bien sympa en matière d'accord. Genre, le mot "gens". les gens. Belles gens, bonnes gens... tiens tu te dis, c'est féminin du coup ? hahahahahahahahahaha

Bah des fois, oui, et des fois... non.

"'Gens' est féminin quand il est précédé d'un adjectif qualificatif épithète." ex : les bonnes gens, ok, jusque là pas de souci

"Si l'adjectif qualificatif précédant immédiatement 'gens' se termine par un 'e' et est donc le même au masculin et au féminin, alors 'gens' est masculin." ex : de tels honnêtes gens, suuure why not

Mais attendez parce que ça va encore se compliquer là:

"Si cet adjectif est lui-même précédé d'un pronom relatif interrogatif (qui, quel…) ou exclamatif (quel…!), ce pronom prend le genre de l'adjectif." ex : Quels honnêtes gens ! ou : Quelles gentilles gens !

Vous suivez là ? Parce qu'on n'a pas encore fini :

"Les adjectifs ou pronoms placés avant 'gens' sont féminins ; en revanche, ceux placés après sont masculins."

ex : Toutes ces bonnes gens parmi lesquels j'ai grandi sont vertueux.

Hahaha oui bien sûr *eye twitching* mais je pense qu'on peut en rajouter encore une couche, non ?

I don’t understand why Medieval stories that were written in verse are ever translated into prose. Is there a reason behind this other than the translators preference?

I personally feel the stories lose a bit of their authenticity that way. I’m sure translating into rhyming couplets is more difficult than simply writing it out in prose but that’s how the author intended it to be read! I want to read it as Medieval people would have, you know?

Translation is always an interesting balancing act between literality, colloquial accuracy, and readability or linguistic grace. That's why you can have twenty different translations of the same thing that are *all* accurate because they all highlight different aspects of the original text. The hardest part of translation isn't what does this mean but how do I best convey the essence of this work in different words, with a different grammatical structure, to people from a different cultural background with different associations and assumptions? It's fascinating, and you can imagine how adding rhyme and meter to the equation makes it all even trickier. Do I preserve the rhythm of this line, or retain this adjective? Do I choose the English phrase that rhymes, or the one that better captures the original nuance? Which is actually closer to the way the original audience would have experienced it?

Another difficulty is that every language has its own rules regarding poetry. I studied both medieval French and translation for a couple years and even though I love translating poetry, medieval French poses all kind of challenges:

- it is closer to latin than modern French in many regards. *But* latin uses acccentuation in verses, which medieval French does not (neither does modern French). But modern English does. So how do you add an accent that wasn’t there ?

- It takes less time to say pretty much anything in English than it does in French (when doing English to French translation, translators are paid depending on the number of caracters in the final translation, because a French text will have around 1.5x more than the original English text). Which gets very tricky when translating poetry, because how do you keep the flow of the original text without abandoning some of the meaning? A verse in modern English will be a lot shorter than in French (the classic iambic pentameter is always translated into an alexandrine, because it’s the natural flow of a French sentence: 12 syllables) (*in modern poetry. In medieval times, the favoured verse was the decasyllabe (10 syllables) because it sounded unatural in French)

- Medieval French, however, does not have the same structure and flow than modern French. Like latin, it has declensions (not as many as latin though), which modern French does not have at all, and neither does modern English. Declensions allow for more freedom in the structure of a sentence: you can put a word pretty much anywhere, the declension will ensure the meaning is not lost. Latin poetry relies a *lot* on that, which makes its translation a lot harder than prose. Same goes for medieval French. But since modern French and modern English do not have declensions, you cannot put a noun and its adjective on a different verse. They have to stay together, or else the meaning is lost. But doing so breaks the original verse, so how do you rewrite it to keel the verse *and* the meaning?

Which do you keep? The music of the text or its exact meaning? is an unending debate among translators. Traduttore, traditore (to translate is to betray) is a very old saying about this frustration felt by almost everyone involved in the process.
