🇷🇺 Moscow was a destination that we both wanted to explore and it surely didn't disappoint. The architecture on all the infrastructure is unique; even the metro is beautiful to look at. St Basil's church (pictured) sits at the end of Red Square and is often the icon viewed when the media stream a story about the parades there. 🇨🇾 I know Instagram is not missing any sunset over the sea pictures but for us this time is a big moment in our lives. The world trip is over and we return to Australia to figure what's next. This isn't all sad though as life's next adventure is now starting. One great lesson we learnt from the whole experience is that though this planet may be large you're pretty much a day away from anywhere. 🇧🇷 Christ the Redeemer is one of the icons of Rio de Janeiro. The statue is 30 meters high (on a 8 meter pedestal) and looks over the entire city. 🇧🇷 Rio de Janeiro has been a much anticipated city for us though not often because of excitement. Amanda's been here before and was fine but everybody we've met in South America has shared a word of warning about the city. Luckily for us we experienced nothing of the warnings. We saw a city of beautiful (and not so beautiful) contrasts and felt energised by the vibrant, often bustling, streets. The Favelas are a tourist icon to the city but also a place where 20% of the inhabitants call home. With restrictions to the land often houses are built on top of each other resulting in a image of Lego building blocks lazily stacked on top of one another's. 🇵🇪 Our last stop in Peru was in Iquitos. Leaving the cool altitude conditions of the Colca Canyon and entering the Amazon was a shock at first; and one of many shocks we'd experience here. Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm is one of many institutions that are working to preserve the natural habitat for the animals in the rain forest. Primarily focusing on butterfly's (but also home to animals rescued) people constantly work every day to raise the reproduction percentage of butterfly's in their avery; keeping in mind that the average lifespan of these creatures is two weeks. Prepare for a few animal snaps from here. 🇵🇪 Waking up at 5am isn't the worst part of getting to this spot and taking the photo. It's more the fact I had to walk from the bottom of the canyon to the top; climbing over 1000 meters in the process. 🇧🇷 A sunset completed over Ipanema beach and most of the tourists have packed up and headed for the bars. Pictured here is the Dois Irmãos or Two Brothers Mountain and that beautiful sky. 🇵🇪 As I took this shot I was nested up on the side of the Colca Canyon watching out for the Condors that nest in the caves of the rocks below. 🇵🇪 After 4 days of hiking The Inca Trail in Peru we look back on the experience as a challenge that will be hard to forget. The terrain and weather over the 45km trek was constantly changing. Our 2nd night camp had this view but we would only see the Salkantay mountain range once the heavy cloud cover lifted after our coldest night. It was moments like waking up to this view that made our efforts worth it. 🇧🇴 We had only spent a short time in La Paz, Bolivia but the city definitely left an impression. The city's history both past and present is interesting to say the least. The world famous San Pedro prison kind of sinks into the background of the bustling city but this clock atop of The Congress Building sure did take our eye. The clocks numbers are backwards and its mechanism goes in the opposite direction to mimic the actions of a sundial in the Southern Hemisphere. It's symbolism also reflects Bolivians looking back into their cultural heritage and showing appreciation to their two main indigenous tribes. We will be a bit silent over the next week or so. We are taking a couple of expeditions that have us out in the wilderness again without wifi. Honestly the total disconnection hasn't phased us at all. 🇧🇴 I knew we'd track down the train cemetery eventually. This place feels like it shouldn't be here but at the peak of the mining industry in Bolivia many trains serviced the region with the sea.
