We are a collective of artists and activists striving to empower trans people across North America and the world. Our annual calendar gives us a platform to represent ourselves as trans individuals through our own eyes, making visible a diversity of people and raising awareness about the realities of our lives and communities.
social justice stuff you see on tumblr is nothing new; these ideas and terminology have been around in activist circles for years. You’re only just finding out about them now because they’ve been brought into the mainstream of a website most of you frequent.
Want to see more queer women of color on film? Help spread the word about our fundraiser on Indiegogo so we can make this movie! Sign up on our mailing list too :) We need to see more examples of us on screen.
It’s that time of the year again! *drumroll please* IT’S FIERCE’S BOWL-A-THON SEASON! This year’s theme is all about the elements, elements.
FIERCE board (literally & figuratively - they were a scrabble board) members jump in excitement at FIERCE’s 2013 Pink and Black themed Bowl-A-Thon.
Are you wondering what the hell a bowl-a-thon is and who in the hell is FIERCE (besides yourself obviously)? Let me tell ya!
FIERCE is membership-based nonprofit organization building the leadership and power of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth of color based in New York City. Not only do we organize around issues that directly impact LGBTQ youth of color (i.e. police brutality, gentrification, access to public space, etc.) but we have awesome leadership development programs and use media and arts as a means to speak out, speak up, and express who we are and what we care about!
Bad ass or nah? I know, it’s pretty bad ass.

The Bowl-a-thon is a youth-organized grassroots fundraising event that brings together over 150 community members to raise $35,000 to support FIERCE and the work that we do with LGBTQ youth. Wondering what kind of things your donation will support?
Let me list a few:
FIERCE members are currently working on a #IHaveARightTo media campaign that will document the stories of LGBTQ Youth and gather information what LGBTQ youth actually need/want. Once members have enough information, they will go into identifying one key issue that they want to work on and launch that campaign in 2015.
FIERCE was founded out of the anti-police brutality movement back in 2000; a couple of years after Amadou Diallo was shot 41 times by the NYPD for pulling out his wallet. We are a part of Communities United for Police Reform which includes us teaching other LGBTQ youth about their rights and what to do when/if you’re stopped by an officer. Members also recently created policing demands that will be carried out within the next year or so.
Even though we’re based in NYC, we are still building national connections with other youth organizations/organizations that work with LGBTQ youth. We travel to conferences and network gatherings in order to connect and build with one another!
FIERCE does a ton of political education and has many leadership development opportunities for LGBTQ youth to get involved in through our internship programs such as the Education for Liberation Project. We also do skill shares and various workshops that allow members to learn life skills (i.e. resume writing, cooking on a budget, creating a budget plan, healthy relationships, etc.) and organizing skills (i.e. creating campaigns, base-building and outreach, fundraising, facilitating, media, etc.).
Are you hooked yet? If not, you should be! See, the thing is, we wouldn’t be able to do any of this work without the love and support of our communities. The Bowl-A-Thon is FIERCE’s most fun and important grassroots fundraising event and we can’t do it without you!

So, how can you help?!
FIERCE is trying to raise a total goal of $35,000 by November 2nd (the day of our Bowl-A-Thon). My personal goal is to raise $1,000. Whether it’s $1, $5, or $20, anything helps. Really!

If you are unable to donate money, please donate a minute of your time and spread the word about this event. Share this with folks you think might be interested in contributing to FIERCE! I’ll be providing updates as the coins come in so be on the look out. :)

P.S. - I know I owe some folks doodles from last year’s efforts. I sincerely apologize for that. I underestimated the amount of time and money it was going to take for me to give everyone doodles. Then by the time I could afford it, the list of donors was taken down! :( But this year, I’m keeping it simple and keeping my promises!
So, for starters: The first 10 people that donate $20 will get a code from me that will get you $20 worth of cab fare! Plus you can ride anywhere in Manhattan for $10 until the end of the year! Equal exchange much? I think so! Once you’ve donated, shoot me a message and I will give you the code! Easy as 1,2,3!

Please help us out by sharing this post or donating by buying one of our great perks(t shirts/pens/patches/etc) or even better, buying an amazing calendar made by trans people for trans people!!

Just received my copy of I Am Jazz! Found a quote by Laverne in it… :)
I Am Jazz is the story of a transgender child based on the real-life experience of Jazz Jennings, who has become a spokesperson for trans kids everywhere.
