Does this summer heat make you feel like a greater naked bat (Cheiromeles torquatus)? Glands in its neck produce unpleasant-smelling, oily secretions—the scent of which has been compared to “stale socks drenched in engine oil.” Also known as the naked bulldog bat, this mostly hairless mammal can be found in parts of Southeast Asia, including Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and the Philippines. It typically lives in large groups, and colonies of up to 20,000 individuals have been observed.

Mato Grosso Dog-faced Bat Neoplatymops mattogrossensis

It is found in several countries in South America, including Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, and Venezuela. The Mato Grosso dog-faced bat possibly has a harem social structure. In Venezuela, colonies consist of a single male and two to four females. It is a seasonal breeder, with females giving birth once per year at the beginning of the wet season.

Fun Facts: Capable of living in all urban, suburban, and rural areas. They also have the most represented fossil record than any other bat species! They love bat houses!! They are one of the best predators against agricultural pests!! They can literally roost anywhere, caves, bat houses, storm drains, wood piles, rock crevices, and also buildings. Males and ladies tend to roost solitarily! Ladies also love to return to previous roosting sites they've stayed at before! Pregnant ladies tend to roost in colonies! They hibernate normally only about 50 miles from their summer roosting spots around November. Some of these bats are actually immune to rabies!!

Northern Yellow Bat Lasiurus intermedius

A bat from the southeastern United States, Cuba, coastal Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. This species typically inhabits wooded areas near permanent water sources or coastal habitats with Spanish moss or palm trees. Mating occurs during flight in the fall. If their maternity roost is disturbed, mother yellow bats will pick up their pups and carry them to a safer roost.
