Can we just.... I’m not going to compare incest to gay relationships because it’s not the same. Some of the same bigotry in knee-jerk reactions, yes, but at least some of that ‘bigotry’ is justified because of parent-child authority dynamics, among others. But not all incestuous relationships are parent-child.
I don’t talk about real-life incest or advocate for it because it’s literally none of my business. I have no interest in sex with family members. The idea of a relationship with my brother is completely repulsive to me. I don’t talk about it because it’s literally none of my business to tell consenting adults what they can and cannot do. If two adults want to have sex with each other, and both consent to the act, who am I to stop them? Even in states and provinces where incest is technically illegal, most of these cases where there is no abusive dynamic involved aren’t pursued by court of law because law enforcement literally cannot find any reason to justify keeping two consenting adults from having sex.
That said, I used to ship wincest and to some degree still do. It’s a hypothetical situation with characters who don’t exist. Some of the attraction of incest ships is in the fact that it’s not you, not your siblings, not your own experience, so it’s easier to imagine in a hypothetical situation that doesn’t apply to you personally. That’s how I see it. In real life, siblings are prone to psychological barriers like the Westermarck Effect, but that effect doesn’t apply to hypothetical siblings who aren’t you.
As far as real-life situations go though, I don’t believe anyone has the right to tell any two consenting adults what they choose to do in the bedroom. Ever. And you can argue “incest is never consensual,” but until someone brings up proof of exactly why that is it’s not an argument. Incest can be abusive, but so can any other relationship. Parent-child relationships undoubtedly have a power dynamic involved, but so to do most non-familial relationships with a huge age difference. Personally I find them distasteful, it doesn’t mean I’m going to go out and tell every person in a relationship where there’s an age-gap involved that their relationship has a natural power dynamic and therefore is inherently abusive. It may not be abusive at all. Just because the potential is there doesn’t mean it’s going to be used.
And psychological effects like the Westermarck Effect can also apply to people who grow up with close friends outside of their family. I have friends this applies to, personally, friends that were like siblings to me as a child and who I would never consider a sexual relationship with because I just don’t see them that way. If it’s fair to say that any two children who grow up in intimate close quarters should not have an intimate relationship as adults, then the same should apply to non-related kids who grow up together, too. Yet no one has a problem with that.
(This isn’t even taking into account the number of second- or third-cousins who develop attraction to each other, which technically counts as incest but is a completely different relationship than, say, a parent-child one.)
Lastly, the genetics argument.... no one is saying that a woman found to carry the gene for Huntington’s Disease should be forbidden to marry or have children. Or people who carry genetic markers for Sickle Cell Anemia, Chron’s Disease, Parkinson’s, Alzheimers, certain types of cancer. Those people, no matter who they marry, carry an increased risk to produce genetically variant offspring. In fact, a woman with the marker for Huntington’s Disease 50% likely to pass it on, because Huntington’s is autosomal dominant. That means she’s more likely to pass on a genetic mutation than a pair of first-generation siblings (assuming they’re a heterosexual couple who may produce children).
I’m just so tired of this argument, honestly, and I’m tired of the shippers being accused of being abusive, disgusting pedophiles. They aren’t. They’re human beings. I’ve never met a single wincest shipper who would touch or harm children and believe me, I’ve met most of them. It’s a small community of people who just want other people to stop filling their tag with hate. Can we, I don’t know... if we let them be, maybe this argument will die away?
