- Tony always felt out of place with her assigned gender. Sure, she had a normal life— she was popular and had lots of friends and played sports and worked at her parents’ restaurant after school
- But she always felt…not quite right with being a boy. Sometimes she would go into her older sister Lisa’s room and watch her put on make up while they talked about the day and felt a strange kind of longing she never understood in the pit of her stomach
- Once or twice, when Lisa went to college, Tony would go into her room and try on her clothes— always hurriedly unchanging before either of her parents could walk in and see by accident
- These feelings remained unaddressed for the most part until Tony started dating Violet
- Dating a superhero meant getting used to new experiences and strange, out of the norm situations— not to mention being introduced to people and things very far out of the societal norm
- Violet introduced Tony to a lot of the supers at Devtech, including Voyd
- Meeting Voyd, and learning that she was trans, opened a whole pathway of realization for Tony
- She asked Voyd a few questions about her experiences, then spent three weeks thinking about what Voyd had said, about being trans, about being lgbt
- Finally, after thinking about it, she voiced it very tentatively to Violet one evening as they studied together, confessing that she thought she might not be a boy
- Violet— educated from a young age by her bi mother and father about lgbt issues— immediately showed support for Tony, telling her she’d by just as happy to have a girlfriend as a boyfriend
- From then on, Tony began exploring her gender identity, slowly becoming more and more open about it
- She talked a LOT to Voyd— Karen, who assumes almost an older sister role in discussing gender identity, navigating body dysphoria, and talking to other people about these issues
- After a while, Tony began going on tentative shopping trips with Violet and Karen to try on clothes that she thought she might like, which turned out to be both nerve wracking and really fun
- Violet and Tony experimented with makeup together, and Tony found she liked wearing it better than Violet did, to both of their amusement
- Tony came out to Helen about her identity, and she was shocked by how easily Helen accepted it, changing pronouns for Tony without batting an eye. Helen knowing about Tony’s identity made things a little easier and Tony didn’t feel like she had to hide as much when she was over at the Parr house
- Tony eventually told the rest of Violet’s family too, and they used Tony’s new pronouns just as easily as Helen had, and soon Tony felt safest to be herself at Violet’s house
- Finally, Tony felt she wanted to tell her parents
- She was terrified about being rejected, and Violet was there with her when she talked to her parents
- Shockingly, it went well— Tony and Violet ended up having to explain a lot of terms and such to Tony’s parents, but eventually they understood well enough and accepted their child’s identity
- After that, Tony started dressing the way she wanted to in public, and began researching about hormone treatment and possible surgery for the future, with her parents’ support
- The only person who wasnt surprised by all this was Lisa, Tony’s sister, who told Tony that she always kind of guessed that Tony didn’t feel comfortable with being a boy, and she was glad that now she was finding a better path for herself
- Tony and Violet made the mutual decision with their parents to transfer together from their current high school to another just outside city limits, more affluent and diverse, so that Tony could be in a new environment and present as she wanted without people who knew her before giving her trouble
- Here is where Violet and Tony got close with Lucius’s niece, Gigi Best, who became their best friend. Gigi was connected in the Devtech program for supers— she had no powers but she wanted to be a super in any case, and her detective skills were uncanny.
- Gigi became their third part to a golden trio and together the three girls became inseparable
- Tony still faced challenges with her identity and dealing with people sometimes, but with Violet and Gigi by her side and her family supporting her, she felt that she could face any obstacle that might come.
