Quick question. When someone asks what age you were in a certain year do you give the age that you were before or after your birthday that year?
Do you give the younger or older of the two ages you were that year?
I give the younger (age before your birthday in a given calendar year)
I give the older (age after your birthday in a given calendar year)
And you may tell yourself "this is not my tomodachi life"
A truthberry might make you tell the truth... But a lieberry? A lieberry will loan you books
I wear your granddad's clothes
I look your granddad's clothes
I'm in your granddad's clothes

the use of dialect forms in the uk english tomodachi localisation is so fascinating to me. the language is markedly different from the original game— it feels a lot more conversational and like adults talking as opposed to the often somewhat stilted language in the original. and yeah theres so many more niche localisations. kaoru sakurayashiki said he was ‘knackered’ earlier which really made me laugh because i say that all the time but also it made me raise an eyebrow because i always was told as a kid that it was a slightly rude term that i shouldn’t really use so i really was mildly shocked to see it in what is effectively a kids’ game (even though it looks like the rudeness of the term is slightly debated and perhaps just apocryphal).
i’m also seeing ‘aight’ and ‘ayo’ as mii greetings which is particularly interesting as i tend to (from a very non-expert perspective) see these more in more urban dialects such as MLE as opposed to ‘knackered’ which reads a lot more like something someone a lot older from maybe up north would say as opposed to MLE’s status as a younger more urban dialect/accent (to my understanding the term encompasses both accent and dialect). i’m fascinated in how the localisation was done because it feels like a real dialectal mishmash but somehow resulting in something that feels very authentic. certainly a very distinct sociolinguistic voice. i’m just saying things really because i love dialect variation but if anyone has any more thoughts on this please say
