Ch 6 excerpt [body swap]
Steve’s ears burned and his heart raced. Static filled his head. This had to be the guy. He could not deal with this right now.
He straightened up. He and Eddie were around the same height, something he found he liked quite a bit. This guy was taller.
Steve examined him, aware that he was acting weird, but he didn’t care. This would probably be his only chance to size up this man. Eddie didn’t seem like he would be the type to talk about crushes with him. He knew it was hypocritical. He should probably run away before he learned something Eddie didn’t want him to know, but he didn’t.
Something hot and volatile stirred deep within him.
His eyes were bright and alert underneath heavy, thick eyebrows. He was wearing a tiny bit of makeup on his eyes and a whole host of silver earrings. A spray of freckles decorated his prominent nose. He looked familiar.
His clothes weren’t special. He wore altogether typical getup for a metalhead. Denim and leather and patches and all that jazz. Now that he thought about it, they might have gone to high school together. He was older than Steve for sure.
“Earth to Eddie,” the man waved in front of his face and Steve frowned. He needed to back up. Why was he so close?
This was the guy? Eddie could do better. Sure, he was tall and he had a pretty enough face, but he was unremarkable. Eddie deserved better than unremarkable. But maybe he and Eddie just had different tastes in men.
Steve choked.
He bent over coughing, desperately trying to catch his breath with his hands back on his knees. His face felt hot and his throat felt like it was spasming. He must have swallowed wrong.
“Shit, are you okay?” A hand touched his back and he slapped it away.
“Don’t touch me,” he rasped. His head was spinning, and not from the lack of air. His coughing slowed down and he wheezed until it came to a point that was manageable for him to stand up.
The stranger looked at his display with wide saucer eyes. He couldn’t be out here anymore. Steve yanked the side door back open and stumbled back inside. His alley retreat had only made things more complicated.
He had to talk to Robin.
