The Devils in the Details
How these 4 characters may each embody aspects of The Devil we know.
So, we know that Hazbin Hotel has its own spin on "The Devil" that guy called Lucifer who rose up against Heaven because he didn't like the idea of serving humanity because God said we're the special ones.
Only instead of that, Hazbin Hotel gave us a Lucifer who, while not malicious, is more of a goofball father who, as far as S1 showed, made a mistake with wanting to help humanity, but instead broke everything.
SO, if Lucifer is the devil, he doesn't seem like a very Devilish character and as such, Hellaverse lacks any traces of the actual Devil, right?
One of the beautiful things about Hazbin Hotel is that we get not one, but a variety of different takes on "The Devil".
Regardless if you believe in the religious aspects of the devil or the many songs, folktales where the devil is involved, you are bound to have heard of The Devil in some form and the many things associated with them.
Which are, but not limited to:
-Symbol of Sinful behavior
And we're going to go over Hazbin Hotel's different aspect (and possible candidates) of The Devil Archetype.
We will start with The Big Boss of Hell himself:
Contrary to "Biblically Accurate Lucifer" or the many portrayals he tends to have in media.
Lucifer Morningstar is "The Devil" in literal NAME ONLY.
Nothing of Hazbin Hotel's take on Lucifer (as of this writing) shows any signs of the one most are familiar with.
Lucifer, at most, is portrayed as a well-meaning, but ultimately naïve free thinker who thought he was helping humans when he would unknowingly doom them.
While there are some signs that he was going to be more "devilish" or sinister from the Pilot,
it's clear those aspects have been downplayed or expunged in favor of making Lucifer a more sympathetic and likable character as he helps his daughter, Charlire Morningstar, to make her Hotel work, granted it did take a lot of convincing and he was at first VERY condescending to the idea, but ultimately Lucifer redeemed himself to his daughter and is now working to make a place where Sinners can hopefully find redemption.
For the next entry we come to a character who actually embodies more of the traits we know are connected to the Devil.
Ironically from the first human ever, the self-proclaimed Dick Master:
Being the first human won't save him from this hellish comparison.
Adam throughout the series as embodied so much evil that it isn't hard to see him as the "Devil" of the series.
Hell may not be filled with a lot of good people, but the fact that Adam never advocated for his descendants to be redeemed was a monstrous trait he showed with a grin.
He is prideful in his self-proclaimed feats and sees himself is above others, quick to thrust his wrath on others who he feels deserve it, has a very lustful outlook on people, acts very greedy with Heaven's benefits and doesn't consider sharing it with those who might show potential redeeming traits, gluttonous with how he is wasteful of his position and even when he eats, and finally envious to a point where he has to compensate by acting like he is better than everyone, the only thing he isn't particularly known for is if he is lazy, unless S2 confirms he was a very lazy father to his kids.
Even his design when masked invokes a devil like design and his favorite music type is Rock which in history has been mocked or decried as "the devil's music" by conservatives.
In these aspects Adam represents the Devil as both a personality and as an aesthetic, albeit an "Angelic"/"Heavenly" devil.
But if there is anyone who could truly embody what the devil is mostly known for throughout the world.
The Trickster, The Deal Maker, The Radio Demon
Alastor has to be the most "Devil" coded character in the series, at least in terms of how the Devil is perceived in folktales and other media, more specifically he's the version of the devil that is known as "Old Scratch".
"Old Scratch" is an alias used primarily in the United States and comes from the old Middle English word "Scrat" for goblin/demon and was used in a literary work called "The Devil and Tom Walker" where in the devil in this version would make deals.
we can also look to Faust as another inspiration for Alastor as in this tale is where the term "Faustian Bargain" comes from as the titular Faust makes a deal with Mephisto to regain his youth as well as power to help people, in exchange for his soul, which sadly doesn't work out as well as he thought it would.
Alastor's coloration is also primarily Red, something that is ALWAYS associated with the devil.
His Deer attributes also give him the horned devil look, albeit Goats tend to be more in line with the Devil as far as animal motifs go.
As an Overlord within the world of Hazbin, Alastor has Deal Making abilities, where in once he strikes a deal with someone, he can own their soul or a favor from them, all to similar to "Old Scratch" and Mephisto.
While we do not know his end goal aside from "cutting his strings" it is clear he is using his position to amass power for himself by collecting souls and holding people to the deals he makes with them, such as Charlie.
He is also rather deceptive, never truly lying, but always blending white truths with lies and being vague on details to lure people into doing what he wants, always wearing a smile on his face to prevent people from guessing what goes on in his mind in an attempt to be in control.
And lastly, we have someone who POTENTIALLY may be a candidate for Hazbin's other "Devil"-ish character.
Now I'll be upfront and say that Lute is someone i am going into fan theory with this section as there is no evidence at the moment that hints that she is anything remotely like the devil.
however, I see her as a potential candidate for embodying one aspect of the devil that Hazbin Lucifer doesn't have.
The "Biblically Accurate" Devil's trait of Rebellion
Most know of Paradise Lost and how the version of the Devil/Lucifer that is popular is the version where he saw himself as so much better than humanity he refused to listen to God who commanded that Angels would serve humanity, and Lucifer then rebelled thinking they could defeat God while amassing a following of other Angels who rebelled as well.
Now how does this connect to Lute?
Well for starters we know Lute is pretty prideful in herself, her position in heaven, along with the laws they enforce. She is a fanatic to a T.
however, with Adam's death, the anger she now holds onto from her defeat at both Charlie AND Vaggie's hands, and her possibly learning of Pentious's redemption, will cause her to have a crisis.
Lute has devoted her entire life to Heaven and protecting it from threats, she never questioned, never disobeyed, and was fanatically loyal. to find that a Sinner is now in Heaven after believing it was not possible and going to war over this idea and losing many of her fellow Exorcists and Adam, it's not going to sit well with her, especially if Sera, Lute's superior, tells her to leave Pentious be in an attempt to try and see if Redeemed Sinners are no threat to Heaven, this will cause Lute to become filled with doubt and resentment as she will not be able to handle this change as in her own words to "Lilith" in the S1 finale, it will "rock the foundation of Heaven", or rather the foundation of the Heaven SHE believes in.
and if this continues, doubt in Sera will settle in as Lute will see that someone she viewed highly of and thought had Heaven's best interest, is now opening up to an unknown and, in her mind, possible invasion of Heaven and is putting Heaven, HER idea of Heaven, in danger.
Doubt will lead to Resentment, as she will see that a sinner who fought against her and Adam is now shattering her world view and possibly even being accepted warmly, is something she cannot accept as this "Sinner" is beneath her and now suddenly they ascended and have become someone she has to protect?
From here things will possibly boil down to
-Lute trying to get Sera demoted and possibly get herself promoted to be above Sera. (so as to ensure Sera can't do anything to protect Pentious)
-turn the souls of Heaven against Pentious by using Red Scare Tactics (basically making Heaven's souls see him as the enemy and make it known he was once a Sinner in hell not unlike how America pushed propaganda to treat anyone who wasn't undyingly loyal to the USA and democracy as a Communist and Russian supporter)
All of this leading to Lute amassing an army of souls/angels who support her views and unknowingly, or perhaps knowingly, will divide Heaven as those who side with her will rebel against Sera and the hosts of Heaven who support Sinners Redemption and those who support Lute and the other hosts of heaven who think Sinners shouldn't be redeemed and keep things as they are.
Possibly leading to a War where Heaven will go down to Hell and eradicate ALL of Hell's denizens; Sins, Hellborn, and Sinners alike.
Thus, Lute will become more accurate to Lucifer's CHARACTER from Paradise Lost
Like this take on Lucifer, Lute:
-Refuses to serve/protect a being she sees as beneath her
-Refuses to obey orders telling her to do so
-Amasses an army of followers who support her views
-Rebels against those who are her superiors in an attempt to overthrow them and establish the order she believes is the right order.
She may become Hazbin Hotel's very own devil in the making.
her wings are shown as black in this shot to possibly foreshadow her coming fall.
Edit: As of now the release of "Gravity" Further pushes this notion.
Lute is so consumed with rage, hatred, and Vengence, that she does not see Peace as an option, saying "anyone who makes Peace is a traitor" and heavily implies she wants to kill Charlie just to get back at Vaggie to make her suffer the way she did and feel helpless as she watches her kill Charlie.
Everything that Lute is saying and singing all shows that she has begun her descent into madness and show just how much she has strayed from what Heaven is supposed to represent, she is less virtuous, and more ego driven, not helped she has a shoulder demon egging her on in the form of Adam's "ghost".
