The Clangen

Trashclan is a clangen inspired comic. The story is based loosely on a run of the game, but some events have been shuffled around or ignored as I see fit

It's also about pigeons instead of cats and I've taken major liberties with the Warriors Lore (tm) because. Pigeons are not cats. Basically this is it's own thing, just warriors inspired... At what point is a clangen comic no longer a clangen comic? I dunno but I'm doing my darndest to find out I guess, lmao

There's also some important set changes because I'm a kiwi and I live in Aotearoa New Zealand! That's where this is set! I don't know what Britain looks like and I'm not researching it for this silly story! I've never seen a fox in my life. Snakes are literally illegal here.

This is my "chill out" project! Lower your expectations! Put that bar on the ground! Trashclan is popcorn, not a 5 star restaurant meal

I have a rough plan in my head after playing the game, but I only script a few moons ahead

Artstyle will be fast and simple or just whatever I want it to be, because this project is for funsies!

I'm grappling with the fact that at its core, the story was all RNG. Set-up and pay-off are added after the fact

Upload schedule is "when I want and when I can". I'm busy and have other projects that take priority (Hot tip: Go read DStD, it actually has an upload schedule lol)

Feel free to shoot asks for any of the characters, I'll try to answer with a doodle or two! BUT be aware that I want the story to speak for itself! If an answer is liable to be a spoiler, I'll either leave it till it's no longer a spoiler or not answer at all, sorry c':

It flares up if I draw too much, especially in summer when heat makes any inherent swelling worse lmfao. I've done this song and dance plenty of times before so I know the drill and it'll be fine, it's just ANNOYING to have to DRAW LESS when I have so much energy to draw, boo!!

The good news is I need to tell silly stories like I need oxygen, and Trashclan is unserious AND stylistically simple enough that I can just… start working on it with my non-dominant hand. I've wanted to get passable at drawing with my left hand ever since my drawing arm started giving me issues years ago and here's hoping Trashclan is the perfect excuse to keep me from immediately giving up because it's hard lol

Right now I'm only doing backgrounds and colours with my left hand, but the goal is to work towards making them entirely that way, at which point I'll be unstoppable!!

June edit: So yeah on top of markets + DStD ending I was also dealing with That back when this page went up for patrons lol. Trashclan ilu but if anything needs to be shoved onto the backburner, it will always be you </3 BUT! Because I'm now Between Comics, Trashclan will be updating weekly so ppl who give me money to get comics in advanced… actually get weekly comics… while I'm prepping to get Foxbird up and running!

I would highly advise against it, even in an emergency! (Non-graphic discussion of parasites and eating birds under the cut, for anyone who wants to look away!)

- In general, don't eat animals that died of sickness - Because they were sick, their body condition is very poor. They won't have much meat anyway - What little meat the adult birds have will be extremely stringy because they're old birds - They're feral pigeons, not production breeds, so even in optimal conditions, they'd still not be great meat producers - They definitely have encysted tapeworms So like. You can. But it will be very bad and I hope you cook them real well, or you're gonna wind up with hitchhikers in your intestines...

Happy trans day of visibility!! Did a quick lil thing for both my comics c: Neither of them really focus on being trans specifically but these characters are all canonically cisn't. As am I! I've talked about the Dragon's gender a bit before but basically it doesn't have a flag because... it doesn't subscribe to any particular label! Maybe it hasn't decided, maybe it never will. Idk!! Shout out to people that are definitely not cis, but aren't using any label in particular. Whether that's because you're still figuring it out, find labels too stressful, or aren't in a position to be visible right now

Heyyyy long time no moon! I promise Trashclan is still alive, the "updates when I have time" thing is just kicking my ass c': I've finished prepping my stuff for market, but decimated the buffer of my main comic in the process. I'M SO GLAD YOU ASKED!! Now I have an excuse to talk about My Design Process!! (Also take their game-given names as an added bonus bc idk when else this would come up lol)

In general, my design philosophy for Trashclan is "find the closest morph I can and then take liberty with the markings". Thankfully this is pretty easy because as long-time domestic animals... pigeons come in lots of colours!!

Orangesky:

I thought her sprite looked super striking so I tried very very hard to match it to a pigeon as close as I could!! Translating the hearts was easy (keeping them consistently shaped is another story, but I'm willing to suffer for her <3), 90% of the work was in me digging around searching for the closest brown pigeon morph I could manage... and some weird recessive dilute situation came through for me!! I'm honestly surprised I managed to find something with both the browns and the grey lmao

Her name I was also pretty attached to by the time I put the run of the game down, but orioles uh... do not exist in this country c': I briefly considered changing it to "Blackbird" or "Thrush" because those are birds in the same family, but pretty much immediately settled on "Orange" because it just kinda looked similar enough for me to be really happy with it! I always knew I was gonna ditch the whole "star" suffix thing for worldbuilding reasons, shoutout to Pav who suggested "sky" bc it 100% keeps the energy of her game-given name and is in general just a rlly good name fhbefr

Ermineleaf:

Ermineleaf was a no-brainer, I took one look at their sprite and went "oh, that's a standard blue bar pigeon" lmao I think I briefly debated changing their prefix to "stoat" because while we have those there (invasive), idk if they moult into their white winter coat and officially earn ermine status... but it was another name I was pretty attached to so I decided to let it slide lol

Bitternfleck:

Straight up, he's just based on my real life pigeon but old and droopifed lmao. My pigeon has pearl eyes, aka she looks haunted by the knowledge of the wilds at all times and I thought that was a perfect translation for the bright cyan

Buttercupfledge:

This design was also a pretty easy 1:1 translation! The majority of the decisions here were just simplifying the pied spotting, aka something I would have done even if she was a cat lol. I also made the call to give her no wing-barring even tho her sprite is striped, also for simplifying reasons.

Settling on "fledge" as the suffix for apprentices was also a no-brainer bc it's... simply the age at which they're fledging! Easy!

Bonus Fringeclaw bc yes he was a real character in the game that I real killed in the first moon:

Fringeclaw is a perfect example of a totally standard cat name that I changed to be bird-applicable! Pigeons don't have teeth but they do have claws, easy swap!

His design is the furthest I departed from the sprite, I genuinely don't think I looked at it when I coloured him in the moon he's in, I just knew he was brown and I wanted him to share colours with Orangesky lmao

Also like. Not to be real for a second but don't beat urself up over it!! Comics are a DERANGED amount of work, I've got my fair share of started and scrapped projects under my belt. It's the nature of storytelling I think c': I like to consider all abandoned projects a mausoleum I can plunder for ideas at a later date bc a lot of the time the thought I put into them winds up useful for some future project c:

Now that the first moon is up I can post the refs of the starting cast, yippee!! I included Orangesky's moon 1 ref as well bc after the first few pages, that's what she looks like anyway lol

Disclaimer: PLEASE do not think about the genetics at play here lmfao. The nitty gritty of colour genetics is super cool, but I am NOT thinking about them in my silly clangen side project, don't come for me. The notes on their colours are mine and for me, so I can easily look up references. If characters kids are genetically possible that's super cool, but I will largely be going with what suits the character and what's a pigeonified approximation of their in-game sprite

Pigeons are simply my fav little guys!! Legitimately the cats of birds!! I was initially kicking around the idea of a chicken clangen, but then Pav was like "wait... pigeons..." and tbh I can't believe I ever considered anything else lmao

The Witch is a major part of the premise of the story so it's not a spoiler for me to say that yes, she'll be back c:<
