Extremely curious about how you do difficult coats like Roan. Do you use gradients?

In concept, roans arent that hard to do! They're a base color (often either a bay, black, or chestnut horse) and then they have faint white fur covering their body, that fade when it reaches their legs and heads.

Did a quick example using some old drawings! Basically i make the base coat first, the come with a large texturized brush (i personally use the Ibis Paint "watercolor (bleed)" brush) and add the gray over the torso and neck! Then i just erase some dots to pretend that i actually put fur details in it. I change the shade of gray depending on how dark the coat is, so it looks better. And yes, i did miss the opportunity to make Red Heavy a RED roan (since i made the Blu one a BLUE roan), but i might actually change his design to make him be a red roan (the colors would match his beard a LOT more)

Do you have any tricks to render semi realistic hair?

ive never really done a tutorial before so forgive me if this isnt helpful ! but this is how i do hair

starting with straight hair these are the steps and methods i use, but this can be applied to any hair type.

heres those same steps with a curl pattern, and i would do the same method with other hair types just adjusting how tightly wound the coil of the hair is. these were done in like 30 minutes so forgive me if theyre not great lol. but this gives a general idea of how i personally render hair !
