Except gun violence as a whole is down, and has been going down for the past 20+ years. What do you mean when you say “…people can stop being murdered in a broad scale?” Unless you’re referring to gang violence, then I do not understand what you mean by the NRA.
Mass shootings using semi automatics.
Well funny that you mention semi-automatic firearms because I’ve actually experienced a mass shooting, do you know what weapon caused the most destruction during that? It wasn’t any semi-automatic firearm, but rather a pump action shotgun. Do you know what a bigger killer during mass shootings is? It’s no firearm, it’s actually the gun free zone sign. Please tell me what you think is the bigger problem here. Lastly, you have not answered either of my previous questions.

People die Australia as a result of firearms violence at almost the same rate they did prior to the firearms act, and some sources state that more than a quarter million illicit firearms exist in Australia currently.
The total firearms death rate in 1995 - the year before the massacre and the laws introduced - was 2.6 per 100,000 people. The total firearms murder rate that year was 0.3/100,000. From 1980-1995, Australian firearms deaths dropped from 4.9/100,000-2.6/100,000 without the implementation of firearms laws. This is a rate of decline that has remained fairly constant; Looking at 1996-2014, in which the rate has dropped from 2.6-0.86, it shows that the decline has been slower in a longer period of time since the law’s passing. Likewise, homicides declined more quickly in the 15 years prior to the firearms laws (0.8-0.3) than in the 18 years since it (0.3-0.1). This just indicates that firearms deaths haven’t been noticeably affected by the legislation you’ve claimed has done so much to decrease gun crime.
It should also be noted that around the same time, New Zealand experienced a similar mass shooting, but did not change their existing firearms laws, which remain fairly lax; even more so than some American states like California, New York, or Connecticut. Despite this, their firearms crime rate has declined fairly steadily as well, and they haven’t experienced a mass shooting since.
The “Australia banned guns and now they’re fine”argument is really old and really poorly put together. Gun control is little more than a pink band-aid on the sucking chest wound that is America’s social and economic problems. It’s a ‘quick fix’ issue used by politicians to skirt around solving the roots of the violence problem in the United States, which are primarily poverty, lack of opportunities, and lack of education.
You could ban guns tomorrow nationwide and gun violence and overall violent crime would not be reduced at all.

Since 1996-1997, neither country has experienced a mass shooting event despite the continued availability of semi-automatic long arms in New Zealand. The authors conclude that “the hypothesis that Australia’s prohibition of certain types of firearms explains the absence of mass shootings in that country since 1996 does not appear to be supported… if civilian access to certain types of firearms explained the occurrence of mass shootings in Australia (and conversely, if prohibiting such firearms explains the absence of mass shootings), then New Zealand (a country that still allows the ownership of such firearms) would have continued to experience mass shooting events.”[44]

also like the funniest thing is when people are supposedly speaking out against racism and do it in an extremely racist way. Like Ancient Egyptians came in all skin tones this isn’t even up for debate and it’s really obvious how that fucking happened they’re in both the North African and Middle Eastern region, and thus were at the center of a lot of intermingling between different ethnic groups, especially with all the trade from Greeks and Romans later on jfc. One thing I’m tired of: The “gay marriage will disappear as soon as Donald Trump is inaugurated” rhetoric. (Well, people aren’t saying exactly that, but you know what I mean. I’m sure you’ve seen posts of the sentiment that gay marriage is under threat from a Trump administration.)
The point is: The majority that decided Obergefell is still on the court.
What, you need a remedial civics lesson? Okay, I’ll spell it out for you:
Obergefell v. Hodges, the decision that allowed gay marriage nationwide, was a supreme court case. This means that the executive and the legislature can’t do shit. (Well ok, if you wanna get technical congress could pass a constitutional amendment, but that would require a supermajority and have to be ratified by the states. But this doesn’t go through the executive anyway, and so Donald Trump and Mike Pence are pretty irrelevant here.)
Further, Obergefell was decided 5-4, and all of the justices in the majority are still on the court. So in order for Obergefell to be overturned, the following would have to happen:
-A justice willing to overturn Obergefell is appointed to Antonin Scalia’s seat.
-One of the five from the Obergefell majority dies or retires (or is impeached I suppose, if you wanna get technical) and is then replaced by a justice willing to overturn Obergefell. (Note that both these appointments would have to get through the senate.)
-Then a case would have to be brought that could challenge Obergefell. I don’t know how you’d even get standing, let alone win in a lower court, who would be extremely likely to just affirm Obergefell. Then you would have to be backed by courts up the chain. Each court would have to agree to hear the case. This seems very unlikely. (I don’t know how you would get so many courts to agree you have standing.) I imagine the only people who could bring such a case would be state attorneys general. ( @dagny-hashtaggart, perhaps you know who might be able to sue in order to somehow challenge the ruling, and what type of case they could bring?)
-And then finally it would have to reach the supreme court and they’d have to decide the plaintiff had standing, and be bold enough to a) overturn precedent and b) rule in such a controversial way, and then they could overturn Obergefell. A justice that wouldn’t have made Obergefell happen is not necessarily one who would vote to overturn it now that it is already law.
So no, Mike Pence can’t just get rid of gay marriage.
Regarding various points on here:
-Probably Trump will appoint someone about as conservative as Scalia, meaning the Court will continue roughly as before. That said, Ruth Bader Ginsburg is getting quite old (83; for sake of comparison Scalia was 79 at the time of his death) and in poor health, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she retires or passes away in the next four years. Breyer is also getting on in years, whereas the three right-leaning justices on the Court (Thomas, Alito, Roberts) are all younger. So Trump could do some damage on this front.
-That said, yeah, Obergefell is pretty damn safe. The Court hates reversing itself (without a direct democratic mandate like Congress and the president, it really needs the doctrine of stare decisis to maintain its legitimacy), and when it has done so it’s generally after decades, not a few years. Especially since conservative justices tend to be if anything more loath to go against precedent (for reasons of jurisprudential philosophy). Thomas is a bit of an exception there, he loves writing dissents and concurrences to the effect that the last 100 years of Court rulings are insane, but I really don’t think Alito or Scalia is gunning for Obergefell now that it’s the law of the land. Roberts especially is big on leaving a legacy, and I don’t think the muddle and bad press that would come from reversing a recent decision of his own court is the sort of thing he wants to leave behind. Short of the Court becoming essentially the arm of a dictatorial executive, I don’t see it reversing Obergefell any time soon. (And if we see the former, which I very strongly doubt we will, we should probably worry more about LGBT people winding up in camps than not being able to marry.)
-To elaborate on the point about lower courts: Obama has had a lot of opportunities to place judges on federal district and circuit courts, so the chance of such a case even getting as far as the SCOTUS is pretty small. Even if it did, it would take years, by which point the political climate and legislation could have shifted in any of a variety of directions that might make the point moot. People act like their favorite decision or law is going to get reversed/repealed the day the political composition of the court changes, but in fact it often takes years, even decades, if it happens at all.
-Hollingsworth v. Perry, which was in many ways the prelude to Obergefell, established that voters don’t have standing to challenge these sorts of court decisions absent a clear violation of their constitutional rights (which being unable to exclude certain groups from marriage clearly isn’t). So yeah, it would have to be a state filing suit. And even then, I think it would have to be in response to a specific state law that contradicted the Obergefell ruling, rather than just suing to reverse the Court’s decision.
-Also, it’s notable that Trump himself has expressed relatively moderate opinions on LGBT issues. He’s appointing people who are rather more immoderate, but I don’t really see him leading the charge against Obergefell from the White House.
tl;dr: it’s highly unlikely we’ll see any substantial erosion of the right of same-sex marriage in the near future, at least on the judicial front. We’ve probably lost our chance to abolish capital punishment for the time being, and abortion rights are in more jeopardy, but gay marriage is safe.
Uh, wow, great typo here, me: when I said “I don’t think Alito or Scalia is gunning for Obergefell” read that as “Alito or Roberts.” As to what Scalia is doing now, we can only speculate.

Thanksgiving in the USA was officially adopted as a holiday during the Civil War, though it had been off-again-on-again celebrated since 1621 – This is thought to be the famous ‘Pilgrims at Plymouth’ Thanksgiving.
Originally, it was celebrated because of a particularly successful harvest was managed less than a year after the Pilgrims first settled the Plymouth colony with the few surviving members of the journey from Europe. This sort of feast wouldn’t happen again until a bountiful rainfall broke a treacherous drought in 1623.
Only one or two other colonies celebrated similar days of thanks, and all of them were related to farming practices. Natives frequently attended these meals. Indeed, the first Thanksgiving saw about 90 Natives join in on the festivities.
That might not sound like a lot initially, but keep in mind that there were only 50 Pilgrims there, so the feast was almost 2:1 Native.
Now, with respect to ‘Genocide’, lemme learn you some knowledge..
Claims of Native genocide by the Pilgrims mostly originate from happenings during the 1637 Pequot War – Also known as the Mystic Massacre.
Essentially, in the area the Plymouth Pilgrims had settled, there were a few major warring Native bands. Specifically, the Pequot, the Mohegan, the Narragansett, the Wampanoag, and the Algonquians.
Basically, the Pequot sucked. They were the most powerful tribe, and were constantly trying to expand their territory – Even before the Pilgrims had come. They regularly raided the Wampanoag and the Algonquians, and bullied the Mohegan and Narragansett. When the fur trade started up, they tried to scare all the other tribes out of competition.
This led pretty much all of the tribes in the area, with emphasis of the Mohegan and Narragansett, to ally with the Pilgrims when shit started to go down.
The Pequot seemed to have the least resistance to the foreign bacteria the Pilgrims brought in, and it weakened them a lot, leaving the other tribes and Pilgrims the ability to reclaim or take over a lot of their land.
About 700 Pequot died during the war. A great deal of them were also taken/given to the other tribes as slaves.
A great deal of the bullshittery surrounding the settlement and colonization of North America comes from people who are unwilling to admit that Natives were brutal with each other… That they were just these awesome, no-socialist hippies that just sang songs and ate berries all day.
I don’t just think that’s dishonest, I think it’s pretty derogatory.
I remember vividly a time I was on a long busride in my home of British Columbia, which has a very high Native population. I was seated next to an Aboriginal man from a Kwakwaka'wakw band and he told me, very proudly, about his tribe’s impressive archive of ancient weave records depicting a great victory over neighboring tribes leaving 600,000 of them killed by the Kwakwaka'wakw warriors, who were greatly outnumbered. I would find out later that Kwakwaka'wakw were known headhunters and cannibals.
Once again, Thanksgiving was celebrated very sporadically, and certainly not as a consistent holiday, until the Civil War.
Thanksgiving never had anything to do with the Natives, other than their participation in a mutually-beneficial relationship with people who genuinely appreciated their help, and thus were willing to share what little food they had with them. It was about farming and harvesting, and later about peace and reconciliation.
We here in Canada celebrated Thanksgiving back in October, but I’ve always liked the story of American Thanksgiving better. To me, all of it’s incarnations have represented unity in one way or another – Different people working together to make everyone’s life better. Whether that be the Natives and the Pilgrims, or the Northern and Southern States.
People just being good to each other, if only for a little bit.

So the guy decided to head to that url, enter that username and password… and he was in. and inside was some STRANGE shit, so he immediately took to reddit to post about it:
Very quickly, someone managed to lock out EVERYONE ELSE by changing the password and access to the directory. I’m unsure if it’s the host of this directory or if some troll managed to fuck everyone else out for the bantz. but before it was taken down, people took some screenshots of one of the directory’s on this internal stratfor page.

Basically they decided to swing in exactly the opposite from the Pilgrims did all this on their own and it was only a couple indians at the first thanksgiving, to they did this to celebrate killing innocent natives that lived peacefully with one another. Which any historian, both native AND not can tell you is a load of grade A bullshit.
Weren’t the Pilgrims dying of starvation and disease before the Natives helped them, as well as being killed by a group of Natives who were rivals with the tribe which they had the first Thanksgiving with, and certain Native groups were okay with helping future settlers attack and even kill said rival groups because they shared a common enemy?
Or is Vox just conveniently ignoring those parts of history, and are just using these Native Americans as their mouthpieces for historical revisionism for one of the two days of the year they cry crocodile tears about the Native Americans, but don’t do jack shit to help them, and instead give half-hearted platitudes like these endless puff pieces and “Indigenous People’s Day” to distract from the fact that they don’t really care about the plight of the Native Americans, and would rather sit on their asses instead of doing something to stop stuff like a certain pipeline?

It’s always those two day specific days, and nothing else. And it usually involves “stretching the truth” about history, cutting out the whole “Pilgrims dying of starvation and plague” and “Natives killing other Natives” parts to incite hatred between races.
As I said in another post, sites like Vox and Mic don’t care about other racial, ethnic, religious groups, or even women as people. They care about them as a source of profit to line their pockets, and that’s pretty damn dehumanizing in my book.
