DAVE: boulevard of broken dreams is actually a pretty good song

DAVE: bear with me on this im on some cultural deconstruction shit

DAVE: the problem we had back on earth was twofold

DAVE: the first and more obvious problem was that you heard it all the god damn time

DAVE: american idiot was a really good album

DAVE: it was a really popular album

DAVE: but green day was so full throatedly anti george bush and so vulgar about it to boot

DAVE: that if you were a radio station with any interest in cashing in on that popularity you were pretty much restricted to like two songs off that album

DAVE: and wake me up when september ends was too somber to be truly catchy

DAVE: so boulevard became the radio's bread and butter

DAVE: and so you couldnt escape it

DAVE: but at the same time it made you keenly aware of how much of a pussy everyone in the fcc was

DAVE: now that would be bad on its own but it also just kinda happens

DAVE: radio would find a cash cow of a song and milk it for all it was worth sometimes decades after the fact

DAVE: and they had always been pussies

DAVE: but thats where the second problem came in

DAVE: see the thing about green day is that they don't half ass anything

DAVE: and american idiot was an album about the faults of america

DAVE: which is the kind of thing centrists in any era really dont like for you to be honest about because it forces them to think about real problems

DAVE: so they have to act like they arent real problems

DAVE: so anyone complaining about them becomes a whiny and or performative asshole

DAVE: boulevard is a song completely devoid of irony and was hated because of it

DAVE: and for a long time the popular contrarian thing to do was make fun of it

DAVE: of course popular contrariansm and true contrarianism are very different

DAVE: completely different motivations moved to further hatred for their similarities

DAVE: so as a true contrarian one is motivated to subvert everything those fucking posers do

DAVE: of course the natural impulse is to listen to boulevard ironically

DAVE: similar to the kind of thing we did with rick astley

DAVE: but the thing is that wouldnt actually be fair to the song because

DAVE: and this is crucial

DAVE: it genuinely is a good song

DAVE: but you cant just listen to it normally either

DAVE: because then you arent doing enough to separate yourself from the clueless masses who dont realize theyre jamming out to an album thats dissing the president whose knob theyre slobbering over

DAVE: now if youre a punk rock fan or even just a fan of green day i probably sound pretty stupid right now

DAVE: and i will admit that i and my legion of countercultural warriors are not immune to stupidity

DAVE: because the the solution was obvious

DAVE: the problem only exists because the radio stripped the song of context in the first place

DAVE: boulevard was always meant to come after a different song entirely and its a song thats honestly a better fit for american idiot than the song american idiot

DAVE: and so this is the origin of one of the divine decrees

DAVE: as sparse as they are immutable

DAVE: that you are allowed to play boulevard broken dreams

DAVE: but only if you play holiday first

it suddenly occurs to me that troll blood probably doesn't taste anything at all like human blood

bcs like both the color and the taste of blood come from it's iron content, so if troll blood doesn't have enough iron to be red, it'll probably taste like smth else too

my guess is that it's something akin to hemolymph, which to my understanding is clear enough of a fluid to be easily tinted by whatever else makes troll blood colors

Several years ago I saw this post on here that was originally the OP talking about Simon and Garfunkel and said “it’s so funny how Simon is like the name of a normal dude and Garfunkel is like the name of a little goblin man” and it became really good commentary on antisemitism and the fact that these two Jewish men, in this context, represent the erasure of assimilation versus the dehumanization of stereotypes. I can’t find that post but I think about it a lot.

the more things change the more they stay the same i guess… also worth noting that afaik garfunkel, along with streisand, was one of the first jewish americans in the industry to use their very jewy last name instead of a stage name.

all this is to say that, while i think a bit of joking about garfunkel’s name is ok (hell nobody is more guilty of this than paul simon lol) i would appreciate it if gentiles would be careful with how they talk about certain things. at the same time, these days i see people being like “NEVER say anything about garfunkel’s name” while also posting blood libel the next day bc that’s the state of the internet rn so it’s really not the biggest fish to fry.
